ISH 2025 – Bathrooms for all generations https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/12/06/ish-2025-bathrooms-for-all-generations/ https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/12/06/ish-2025-bathrooms-for-all-generations/#respond Thu, 05 Dec 2024 19:00:58 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=29151 ]]> ISH 2025 – to be held from 17-21 March – will focus on prioritising accessible and digital bathrooms that can be used by people of all age groups.

Given the number of people requiring care is only set to increase worldwide, it makes sense to focus on how to ease the pressure on the residential care system and assist anyone who would like to stay in their home to do so with ease and comfort. But it’s not just about the aged or those living with disabilities. Many of the fixtures and fittings that create an accessible bathroom are also beneficial for young families.

ISH-2025-Accessible-BathroomsHeight-adjustable elements or touch-free taps are particularly suitable for children, for example. However, owners and builders do not have to install handrails and seats in the shower from the outset if they are unlikely to be needed for several decades. All they need to do is make provision for future requirements today by, for example, reinforcing the wall where a grab rail is to be installed at a later date. Sufficient space around the shower, washbasin and toilet should also be factored in at the planning stage so these facilities are subsequently accessible for people using a wheelchair or walking frame.

ISH-2025-Accessible-BathroomsDigitalisation and technical aids also make an important contribution to accessibility. For people requiring care and those with physical disabilities, new technologies in the bathroom are not just a gimmick, but a key element in ensuring greater safety and self determination. Sensor-controlled lighting activates the light as soon as someone enters the bathroom, thus minimising the risk of tripping. If a fall does occur, sensors in the floor recognise who has fallen and alert relatives or the emergency services. Voice assistants can also provide support in an emergency. Furthermore, it is possible to integrate measuring devices that transmit health data to carers or relatives. Intelligent mirrors can even remind users to wash, comb their hair, brush their teeth or take their medication.

ISH-2025-Accessible-BathroomsA bathroom that is both accessible and digital is particularly advantageous as we get older. However, this is also part of the problem. When they are 30, people don’t want to think about their likely physical decline 40 to 50 years later. Hence, many of them fail to create the prerequisites for accessible conversions later, for example, LAN/WLAN coverage, basic electrical connections or empty ducts for data cables. Smart bathrooms require both qualified sanitary and HVAC installers and electrical engineering expertise.

ISH in Frankfurt am Main from 17 to 21 March 2025 represents a great opportunity to learn all about the latest developments. In the ‘Solutions for Bathrooms’ section, exhibitors will be showcasing innovations for private bathrooms, spas, pools and wellness facilities as well as (semi-) public and industrial bathrooms, care-sector bathrooms and bathroom installations.

ISH-2025-Accessible-BathroomsNext year’s ISH will be accompanied by a multifaceted, complementary programme of events. One of the highlights will be the first ‘Value of Water Conference’ at the Congress Centre of Messe Frankfurt on 17 and 18 March 2025. At the conference organised by Messe Frankfurt and the Handelsblatt Media Group, experts and decision-makers from the sanitation, real estate and housing sectors, as well as representatives of local authorities and NGOs, will discuss global innovations and best practices in the field of water management and hygiene.

ISH-2025-Accessible-BathroomsInterior design, current trends and future perspectives in the sanitary industry are the focus of the Design Plaza in Hall 3.1. In the immediate vicinity, the ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend area will present visionary bathroom concepts as holistic room solutions. Additionally, the special ‘SPAs, Pools & Wellness’ area in Hall 3.1 will offer insights into modern wellness solutions while, one level lower, in Hall 3.0, the ‘Public, Care Sector Bathrooms & Clean Water’ area will spotlight innovative approaches for public bathrooms, care-sector bathrooms and hygienic drinking water supplies.

ISH-2025-Accessible-BathroomsThe latest developments and pioneering ideas combined with ground-breaking design are front and centre of the Design Plus Award by ISH. This prestigious award is given by ISH in cooperation with Stylepark, the magazine for architecture and design, and honours outstanding innovations and sustainable designs in the bathroom, heating and air conditioning sectors. The award ceremony will take place on the first day of the fair and the award-winning products will be on display in a special exhibition throughout the fair.

Salone del Mobile.Milano announces the first Euroluce International Forum https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/12/03/salone-del-mobile-milano-announces-the-first-euroluce-international-forum/ https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/12/03/salone-del-mobile-milano-announces-the-first-euroluce-international-forum/#respond Mon, 02 Dec 2024 19:00:19 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=29109 ]]> The 2025 edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano will herald the launch of the first edition of The Euroluce International Lighting Forum, a global arena for multi-voice discussion on the leading issues in lighting design.

The Forum, to be held 10-11 April 2025, will include two days packed with events, including conferences, round tables and workshops, numerous international guests and a space created ad hoc in the Euroluce exhibition area.

One of the aims of the Forum concept is to offer the design community an increasingly wide-ranging and expanded event rounding off and fully complementing the commercial offering. Light will be the focus of an emotional and cognitive journey, offering visitors an immersive and distinctive experience. Light is addressed not just in terms of its technological potential, but also through a deep and philosophical reflection on its role as an expressive and innovative language.

The Forum will bring together an international panel of creatives, architects, designers, scientists and lighting industry professionals, to discuss highly relevant topics. The first names to be confirmed include DRIFT, specialising in sculptures, installations and experiential performances that underline the parallels between artificial and natural structures, A.J. Weissbard, a lighting designer and multifaceted artist of international renown; and Marjan van Aubel, a leader in the field of solar design for a sustainable, innovative and mindful future.

“Following the first transformation of Euroluce that we set in motion at the previous edition, rethinking the exhibition layout, we are proud to present another important innovation, this time concerning the content of the exhibition. Light is, incontrovertibly, an increasingly integral part of our lives. As a place where ideas and visions that lead to dialogue intersect, laying fertile ground for innovation, the Forum reflects the DNA of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, which has always been a generator and bearer of new ideas and formats for tackling contemporary challenges” – Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile

A structured programme will provide an opportunity to dig deep into key issues such as the interaction between light and architecture and light and wellbeing, through an integrated and multidisciplinary design approach. The central role of light in integrated and sustainable design for public and private spaces, with quality of life and the future of our planet at its heart will be explored.

“Light not only makes things appear, it also creates atmospheres, depths and perceptions capable of interpreting architectures and open spaces, as in a pentagram. The role of the designer is increasingly similar to that of the conductor of an orchestra, who does not just execute a score, but gives a personal interpretation of it. It is with this sort of strategic role within the industry in mind that FederlegnoArredo’s Assoluce felt it was time to set up a dedicated international forum. I would therefore like to thank the Salone del Mobile.Milano for deciding to give shape to this idea with The Euroluce International Lighting Forum, confirming, once again, that our trade fair is not just the world’s leading design and furniture sector event but, uniquely in the world, is the home of entrepreneurs committed to designing the future of the sector they represent” – Carlo Urbinati, President of FederlegnoArredo’s Assoluce

antoniolupi Flow washbasin selected for the ADI Design Index 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/11/29/antoniolupi-flow-washbasin-adi-index-2024/ https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/11/29/antoniolupi-flow-washbasin-adi-index-2024/#respond Thu, 28 Nov 2024 19:00:24 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=29055 ]]> The Flow washbasin by antoniolupi has been included in the ADI Design Index 2024 – the prestigious publication by the Association for Industrial Design (ADI) that rewards the best of Italian design. The award ceremony took place in Milan, at the ADI Design Museum, in the presence of ADI President, Luciano Galimberti.

The Flow washbasin—selected in the ‘Design for Living’ category—is made of white Carrara marble and expresses an innovative design language aimed at sustainability. Continuing the successful collaboration with designer Paolo Ulian, the Tuscan company pursues its search for a balance between ancient materials and new processing techniques. Flow is an example of this philosophy, an “experimental object” that, as described by CEO Andrea Lupi, is born from the generative power of water. This washbasin, with its unique appearance, emphasises a detail that would generally be considered a flaw: the numerically controlled waterjet cut, with its fringed and pleated effect, becomes a distinctive feature in Flow.

antoniolupi-FLOW-03

Flow is not just a washbasin but a unique sculpture, capable of transforming a “defect” into an essential decoration that tells the story of marble craftsmanship. Applied to a classic material, this aesthetic innovation makes Flow “not an ordinary washbasin,” Andrea Lupi says.

antoniolupi-FLOW-02

In addition to ensuring a unique aesthetic quality, the waterjet cut also allows for greater material optimisation compared to traditional processing techniques. It makes it possible to obtain several washbasins of different diameters from a single marble block by nesting them within one another, thus improving the sustainability of the production process.

antoniolupi-FLOW-01

This recognition confirms antoniolupi’s commitment to creating cutting-edge design solutions with environmental consciousness while the Flow washbasin represents a perfect blend of contemporary aesthetics and functional innovation.

Being included in the ADI INDEX encourages the brand to continue its mission to innovate the interior design sector, carrying forward the tradition of Made in Italy with creativity and passion.

Ninka at Sicam 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/11/26/ninka-at-sicam-2024/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 19:00:38 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=29027 ]]> Last month at Sicam 2024, Ninkaplast GmbH, presented a range of functional and integrated solutions inside kitchen cabinets.

From waste management and the organisation of pull-outs and drawers to storage space solutions – plastic was the material of choice at Sicam in Pordenone, Italy, in terms of both shape and colour. The complete base unit “Qanto“ which Ninka had placed in the centre of a huge kitchen island proved to be an attractive eye-catcher in Hall 2.

As if from nowhere, a food processor appeared in the centre of a flush marble worktop measuring around three square metres. However, the user did not have to stretch out to use it; the tray and its load could be pulled into easy reach. After use, the appliance disappeared back into the attractive structure at the touch of a button.

10030-0008-10-2024-01-Sicam-scaled

As a second possible application, Ninka showed the spice unit “Qanto“ equipped with three shelves within easy reach directly next to a hob in a kitchen unit. The lower shelf had space for tall bottles of oil and vinegar as well as spice mills, while the middle shelf, which was only half the size, held numerous small jars of spices. After cooking, everything is perfectly tidied away in the base unit. In this “Qanto“, the upper shelf fits into the worktop when retracted, providing a firm base for smaller kitchen utensils for preparatory cooking steps.

10030-0008-10-2024-03-Sicam-scaled

The “one2eight” waste collection system, which was positioned next to a water treatment system in the base cabinet, also proved to be an eye-catcher for visitors. The system can also be used as a solitary solution installed in the centre.

Inspired by the British market, Ninka presented 25.5-litre waste bins which can offer a total volume of 51 litres in combination with the “one2five” and “one2six” suspended frame systems in 40 cm base units. In 60 cm base units, a large bin of this type supplements the three-bin configuration with a 42- and an 8-litre bin and enables triple separation to a total of 75.5 litres. Ninka also offers a suspended waste bin solution for shallow installation depths of just 486 mm. To prepare the systems directly for installation, the manufacturer has developed a complete set with a push-to-open mechanism.

10030-0008-10-2024-04-Sicam-scaled

In addition, Ninka showed some clever combinations at Sicam. As all container systems are equipped with a static shelf-cover, above which there is usually storage space, the manufacturer suggested the use of suitable organiser trays, which are normally used in drawers.

10030-0008-10-2024-07-Sicam-scaled

Ninka was also creative when it came to the “one2top” range of bin lids and inserts: from organic waste lids with coconut mat odour filters and visually appealing metal inserts, which are particularly popular in Italy, to tidy organisation solutions with dustpans, hand brushes and cloth hangers – variety was the order of the day at the supplier trade fair for the furniture and interior design industry, which was once again very popular.

Ninka products are available in Australia through Hafele.

Salvatori’s new-look London showroom https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/11/15/salvatoris-new-look-london-showroom/ Thu, 14 Nov 2024 19:00:15 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=28964 ]]> Renowned Italian design brand Salvatori strengthens its partnership with Piero Lissoni with the redesign of its flagship London store which was officially opened on 7th November, 2024.

Located in a elegant, listed building in the city’s West End, the showroom has undergone a stunning makeover. One of three showrooms owned by the Italian brand (the others are located in Milan and New York), the new layout reflects Salvatori’s signature Italian flair.

Salvatori-London-ShowroomAn effortless combination of technological innovation with high-quality craftsmanship, the showroom showcases the innovative textures, sculptural bathroom furnishings and contemporary furniture, predominantly made from natural stone and designed by some of the world’s most renowned names in design and architecture.

This space offers clients and designers privileged access to Salvatori’s designs and personalised services, allowing visitors to experience the extraordinary tactile nature of the brand’s products at first hand. Along with Milan and New York, the London showroom represents another significant step in Salvatori’s global growth.

Salvatori-London-ShowroomThe longstanding relationship between Salvatori and Piero Lissoni, a leading figure in the design industry, is marked by deep creative synergy and a shared admiration for craftsmanship and the pursuit of beauty.

“The Salvatori showroom is already a classic destination in London so the redesign is about reflecting its position as a market leader,” says Piero Lissoni. “The reimage maintains its subtle and – paradoxically – Italian understatement that adapts to English style while preserving the strength, power and beauty of its creations.”

The two-storey, 200-square-metre showroom is home to a series of elegant and inspiring sets featuring the brand’s exclusive textures, furniture and accessories, with a focus on its customisable bathroom collections.

Salvatori-London-ShowroomThe ground floor, spanning 50 square metres, has undergone a complete architectural transformation. Visitors are welcomed by a wall clad in iconic Italian Bianco Carrara marble in the popular Tratti finish which showcases Salvatori’s expertise and heritage in developing innovative, contemporary textures.

Two new walls and a raised floor section create a setting for a revolutionary synergy. On one side is The Small Hours in elegant green Verde Antico marble. Patricia Urquiola’s first bathroom collection for Salvatori was presented during Milan Design Week 2024 and now makes its international debut in London. With thoughtful attention to functionality and colour, The Small Hours captures the atmosphere of dawn, with each piece designed to make the bathroom a place of intimate retreat and reflection in those precious moments before the world awakens.

Salvatori-London-ShowroomOn the other side is Hito in Bianco Carrara, a bathroom collection with minimalist lines and pure volumes designed by Piero Lissoni in 2023. Like The Small Hours, Hito is highly customisable and adaptable to each individual’s needs, capturing the essence of “person,” as reflected in its Japanese-derived name 人.

Salvatori-London-ShowroomA third display showcases the Anima bathtub, designed by New York firm Yabu Pushelberg, here in Silk Georgette® limestone, along with a wall in Patchwork in the same material. Designed by Piero Lissoni, Patchwork is a perfect example of the power of ingenious design and sustainability. Based on a “zero waste” philosophy, production offcuts are repurposed as tiles that can be arranged by designers and clients to create their very own “patchwork” wall, ensuring truly unique designs that don’t come at the cost of the environment.

Salvatori-London-ShowroomThe basement level is a hybrid environment that blends inspiring showroom displays with a practical workspace where architects, interior designers and clients can experiment with textures and benefit from personalised consultations with the Salvatori team.

The décor features pale tones such as Bianco Carrara, Crema d’Orcia, and Placido Paradiso, providing an elegant backdrop for the enticing displays which include the Punto and Anima bathroom collections by Yabu Pushelberg and the Adda family of modular drawers. Patricia Urquiola’s fresh, original aesthetic is found here as well, with The Small Hours collection this time in Placido Paradiso marble and Coffee Oak.

Decoratori Bassanesi at Cersaie 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/11/01/decoratori-bassanesi-at-cersaie-2024/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 19:00:08 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=28882 ]]> Decoratori Bassanesi presented two new surfaces designed by Federica Biasi at Cersaie, the fair held from September 23 to 27, 2024 in Bologna, a national and international focal point for the ceramic tile and bath furnishing sector.

The two new collections are inspired by elements and shapes from the Orient: Kimono, in bold, vibrant colours, takes cues from the knots and folds of the traditional Japanese robe, and Wă suggests the architecture of rural villages in China with their uneven terracotta tiles.

Decoratori-Bassanesi-Cersaie

The new products for 2024 were displayed in a contemporary, original staging featuring warm, earthy, contrasting tones that offers a tactile and visual experience of the new collections. Ceramics cover the walls and surfaces of the space, alternating with evocative photographic images illustrating the research and conception process behind their development.

“Decoratori Bassanesi is constantly committed to exploring the full potential of ceramics through innovative, audacious collections that meet the highest quality standards, – says Paolo Serraiotto, Founder and President. Those who choose our brand embrace a design-oriented approach – in fact, since 2008 the company has collaborated with international designers in the pursuit of new inspirations, welcoming new challenges and exploring the full potential of the material.”

The new products and the mise-en-scene for the latest edition of Cersaie demonstrate the brand’s aim to offer an ambitious concept of sophisticated, elegant ceramic coverings, continuing the evolution of aesthetics and form that Decoratori Bassanesi has been building together with art director Federica Biasi.

Kimono – design by Federica Biasi

The Kimono collection designed by Federica Biasi is inspired by the composition of traditional Japanese kimonos, which involves a complex series of knots and folds almost like a sort of origami: the eri collar, the sode sleeve, the doura lining of the top part of the kimono all contribute to create geometric designs with different fabrics and patterns, which Biasi draws on in creating surfaces and ways of laying them. The collection also reprises some elements form the firm’s historical archive of patterns and colours.

Decoratori-Bassanesi-Kimono

“Decoratori Bassanesi‘s historical archive was a great source of inspiration, a point of departure for an exploration of colour, ceramic yield and glazing, while the geometric motifs and bold colour combinations of the Far East opened the way to new high-contrast laying patterns, – says Federica Biasi – The Kimono collection is a reflection on the infinite possibilities of colour and material, blending distant traditions and cultures.”

Decoratori-Bassanesi-Kimono2

Kimono reprises one of the firm’s historic products, Millerighe, with references to the ceramics of the late 1980s. The project also revives a few finishes and processes typical of Decoratori Bassanesi’s early days, double-firing and enamel glazes, with their distinctive shiny texture and vibrant shimmer. With its sinuously smooth feel, Kimono offers that same sort of aesthetic effect, updated with new materials and contemporary workmanship.

The result is a textured collection in bold, vibrant tones: 8 colours, two finishes – smooth and ribbed – and 2 different sizes – 5×15 and 15×15 –encourage designers to play with combining them in creative ways.

Wă, design by Federica Biasi

The design for the Wă collection by Federica Biasi carries us away to the Orient, taking cues from the designer’s travels in China, where she was inspired by the roof tiles of pagodas and typical dwellings in rural villages.

In these buildings, irregular handcrafted terracotta tiles are layered and stacked atop one another in an interlocking system inherited from ancient, traditional Chinese techniques. The designer has translated her impressions of the patterns of these tiles into a design structure, giving rise to the Wă collection.

“Usually, it’s the simplest elements that catch my eye, straightforward images that call up a specific vision. – says Federica Biasi – For the Wă collection, the sharp, strong lines of the buildings, with their ties to history, ancient forms of craftsmanship and the use of natural materials, were a flash of inspiration that, over time, generated the creative process the design grew out of.”

Decoratori-Bassanesi-Wă2

The Wă collection has a harmonious, warm, vivid aesthetic that blends décor with functionality and comes in four natural tones ranging from hazelnut to caramel. As in a mosaic, each individual element is repeated in a 9.5 x 18.5-cm portion that makes up the new covering, in full-body porcelain tile.

Tackling Waste Management with Hettich: Helping your clients reuse and recycle https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/10/22/tackling-waste-management-with-hettich-helping-your-clients-reuse-and-recycle/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 19:00:55 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=28765 ]]> In recent years, waste management has emerged as a pressing issue in Australia. As the country grapples with the challenge of reducing its environmental impact while promoting sustainable living, household waste has become a significant contributor to landfill overflow and environmental degradation. However, with a few mindful changes in our project designs, we can help clients drastically reduce their ecological footprint and embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.

One way to assist clients to enhance waste management efforts is by adopting the “5 Rs” approach: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot.

Hettich-waste-management-2

The 5 Rs of Waste Management

  1. Refuse: The first step in managing waste is to be mindful of consumption habits. This involves making conscious decisions to refuse items, particularly single-use products and non-recyclable materials, before they even enter the home. Opt for reusable bags, containers, and bottles, and avoid unnecessary packaging, especially single-use plastics. By doing so, households can prevent waste before it becomes an issue. Pantry storage has never been easier, or looked better, with drawer solutions such as the AvanTech YOU.
  2. Reduce: Reducing waste means purchasing only what is necessary and seeking products with minimal or recyclable packaging. For instance:
    • Buy in Bulk: Purchasing items in larger quantities reduces packaging waste, especially for staples like grains, nuts, and cleaning supplies.
    • Choose Quality Over Quantity: Investing in durable, high-quality items that last longer reduces the need for frequent replacements, minimising overall waste. This can apply to clothing, electronics, and household goods.
  3. Reuse: Reusing items is key to lowering demand for new products and the resources required to produce them. Whether repurposing containers or extending the life of everyday items, reuse helps reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills.
  4. Recycle: Recycling ensures that materials like paper, plastic, and metal can be processed and turned into new products, reducing the demand for virgin resources. However, contamination remains an issue in Australia’s curbside recycling services. Proper sorting of recyclables is essential to ensure they are effectively processed. Keeping a clean, organised kitchen with discreet pull-out bins, such as those under the work surface, can make sorting waste more manageable and stylish. These concealed bins allow for easy access during food preparation and help maintain a sleek, clutter-free kitchen environment.
  5. Rot (Compost): Organic waste, such as food scraps and garden clippings, can be composted at home to create nutrient-rich soil for gardening. A compost bin or tumbler in the backyard is ideal for breaking down organic matter over time. Hettich’s Bin.it range, with its 2-3 separate compartments, facilitates the segregation of recyclables, organic waste, and general trash. This system promotes proper waste separation and environmentally friendly practices within the home.

Hettich-waste-management

By incorporating the 5 Rs into daily routines, Australian households can take meaningful steps toward reducing their environmental impact. As waste management becomes an increasingly critical issue, these simple yet effective practices can make a lasting difference in the quest for sustainability.

The Nover Story https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/09/19/the-nover-story/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 20:00:17 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=28280 ]]> Nover is one of Australia’s largest family-owned and operated businesses, today supplying the cabinet making and joinery industries with more than 25,000 products across 17 different categories.

Established in 1954 originally as a civil engineering business by Norm Overmeyer and Ken Cowley. The company name “Nover” is an amalgamation of Norm’s first and last names. Nover was heavily involved in construction through the 1960s with the partners renovating and refurbishing a number of blocks of flats throughout Sydney as well as one-off construction projects such as the Visitors Stand at Drummoyne pool. This soon led to Nover establishing a joinery business which was used to supply cabinetry to the construction arm of the company.

Norm sold his share of the business in the late 1960s and Ken took over as the sole owner.

Nover-70-yearsKen’s background was in the wool industry, having spent many years working for a firm of wool brokers. As is the case today, products are not sold directly but through an established trading house. When his contacts in these trading houses learnt of his association with the building industry, Ken was offered the opportunity to take supply of and resell a number of building products. Initially this was a hodgepodge of items (even including items such as tyres and air hoses) but gradually this broadened to include a general range of building products.

“The joinery industry was very different in those days,” explains Steve Cowley, son of Ken, and now Managing Director of Nover. “There was no real cabinet hardware to speak of, for example, and all the cabinets were timber framed”.

Nover-70-yearsSoon Nover began to import High Pressure Laminate and this range of products soon expanded to become the backbone of the business for the next 40 years. “As the industry changed over time, Nover grew its product lines and became more of a wholesaler specialising in joinery products,” adds Steve.

By the early 1980s the wholesaling side of the business had taken priority so the family made a decision to exit the joinery business which was sold to a third party. This happened soon after Steve joined the business in 1976 and he and Ken set about specialising in the cabinet making and joinery industries.

“I had a background in accounting so, when I first started, I was working in what you’d call the accounts department,” says Steve. “But I quickly realised that wasn’t for me so I made a sidestep into product management and sales which was a much better fit”.

Of course, the cabinet making and joinery industry was very different at the time Steve joined the company. “It was a far simpler industry in those days,” he recalls. “This was even before metal runners were the norm – it was all plastic components. And manufacturing was a very different ball game”.

The-Nover-Story
The Nover showroom and headquarters in Eastern Creek, Sydney

Being such a specialist in this area, Nover was often leading the way and an early adopter of new products and new technologies. Its business has always been based on sitting across a variety of product families and very much driven by what joiners wanted and needed in their factories. “We sit across most sectors of the industry and our product range is the broadest of any supplier in the industry,” says Steve. “We have a plan but we’ve also allowed for organic growth that is driven by the industry and the feedback we receive from customers”.

As a market leader, Nover saw an opportunity for the supply of hardware and panels as well as consumables and ancillary products such as handles. But the product range has always included a variety of wood-based panel products including decorative surfaces and low-pressure melamine, plus a decent selection of hardware which has expanded as new technology and expectations from the design community required.

“Our customer base is extremely broad,” Steve explains. “It’s made up of kitchen manufacturers, cabinet makers, furniture manufacturers, shop fitters, joiners and fit out companies so our goal is to stock and sell all the major components needed across this diverse customer base”.

As a business, Nover invests heavily in sourcing its products preferring to establish exclusive relationships where possible. Steve says Nover seeks to source products that match the philosophy of the business, and have the quality required for our Australian market, which they are able to sell at a price that matches the expectations of its customers. “We make sure we have a presence at international design shows and hardware shows, and we travel to visit factories as these all form an essential part of our research and staying in touch with new developments,” says Steve.

Having been in the industry for so many years, Steve has seen first-hand how much it has changed with the advent of technology and new manufacturing methods. “The biggest change I’ve noticed is that joinery businesses used to make everything – doors, benchtops, carcasses, the lot. As we moved away from laminate benchtops we’ve needed to work with specialist stonemasons and then specialist door painters, and glass splashbacks. So, now joinery businesses have to interact with so many more third parties to complete projects,” he explains.

The-Nover-StoryWhen asked to predict the future of the cabinet making industry, Steve points to more specialisation requiring a narrower skill set as we compartmentalise the industry further and further. But, overall he sees the size of the industry growing, as will the size of projects being undertaken.

In terms of Nover’s plans for the future, Steve says the company intends to remain at the forefront of sourcing new products and supporting those products already in the family. “Whenever we have the opportunity of course we will try to be first,” Steve laughs. “But those opportunities don’t come along too often. Any vacuum left when a new product comes onto the market is very quickly filled and so our product range will evolve as it has to”.

Steve points to the introduction of two new product families which he feels rounds out Nover’s offering to the industry. The company has recently secured an arrangement with Salice for its hardware and ColourPyne for its range of board products. The company is well established with branches across the three eastern states of Australia and intends to remain 100% family owned.

When asked what he thinks makes Nover unique in this crowded part of the market Steve is quick to point to its employees. “Our philosophy is that our people are so important,” he says. “We employ well over 100 people in ten different locations and the average length of service is eight years – with some at up to ten or even 20 years”.

We’re excited to see what the future will bring for the Nover company, the Cowley family and the company’s employees so watch this space!

Trends & Themes from Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/06/28/trends-themes-from-salone-del-mobile-milano-2024/ Thu, 27 Jun 2024 20:00:10 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=27266 ]]> TKBB’s Melanie Gardener was lucky enough to travel to Milan last April to visit Salone del Mobile.Milano and explore the best of Milan Design Week.

This was her 8th visit to the show and she found plenty of inspiration around every corner!

Salone del Mobile.Milano Report Salone del Mobile.Milano Report

The international community attended en masse which gave the city an electric feeling, although it did make for some crowded stands and showrooms, and much standing around in long queues. It was good to see attendee numbers rising from 2022 figures which were impacted due to the effects of the pandemic and the limitations of Russian and Chinese attendees to travel.

Salone del Mobile.Milano ReportExhibitor numbers were lower this year, down to 1950 from 2175 in 2022, but a new approach to stand design and layout made for a more interesting way to travel around the show. The EuroCucina and International Bathroom Exhibition halls were moved closer to the main entrance which was a very welcome change.

The Milan Design Districts were again buzzing with installations, interesting events, conceptual art and events aplenty. The addition of a new Design District – Alpha – further expanded the offering outside the fairgrounds.

Salone del Mobile.Milano ReportThe kitchen displays saw a deep dive into what it means to be “at home” with all major design houses expressing their interpretation of the theme. There was a huge focus on the idea of convivial living, where thoughtful and emotive design enhances the lived experience. Organic shapes abound with designs that highlight nature and invite the outdoors in. We harked back to the past with many nods to nostalgia and comfort. Colour and metallics played their part in the design story, as did a sense of the unexpected – gestures that surprised and delighted for textural or sensory engagement.

Salone del Mobile.Milano ReportIn the bathroom space, it was all about “wellness” in a deeper sense – taking it to the next level. With timeless concepts bringing a sense of refined luxury, we played with nostalgic themes that took inspiration from simpler times. Nature – natural forms, natural materials, natural shapes – was prevalent in the bathroom space to bring a sense of peace and calm to underscore the idea of relaxation and wellness. Plenty of customisation and personalisation meant that the bathroom could be designed as a space that functioned uniquely for the needs of the user.

Salone del Mobile.Milano ReportThe appliance halls were packed with products that focussed solely on the user experience, and how design and technology could contribute. Featuring plenty of user-drive innovation, appliances that provided precise cooking, high performance and automated controls were featured across the majority of stands. Integrated functionality was of high importance, with extraction technology being pushed as far as it can go to deliver a powerful performance.

Ayrmont for manufacturers https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/05/15/ayrmont-for-manufacturers/ Tue, 14 May 2024 20:00:49 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26711 ]]> In an exciting new addition to the Ayrmont ARMS CRM, a new module is available specifically designed for manufacturers.

A major pain point for many manufacturers is the quotation process – it’s often time-consuming with a high margin for error, and all too often involves a high degree of guesswork.

The Ayrmont ARMS CRM works from a created library of pre-loaded templates – everything that goes into making a carcass is included in the template. Then individualised items such as doors, drawer boxes, labour and factory overheads are added. This creates a library of products from which the manufacturer can call across the template and the system automatically calculates (or recalculates) the price.

Ayrmont-ARMSThis saves time as the same cabinet does not need to be newly created every time a new cabinet size is required.

Product pricing is pre-loaded into the system so, if a price increase is received from a supplier, the price only needs to be updated in the pricing area and every single product template created will automatically be updated. Almost every template can be duplicated and then adjusted, meaning you don’t have to start from scratch each time.

Ayrmont-ARMSBecause the clever people at Ayrmont understand that time is limited, the ARMS CRM is set up for you so the QTool (the quoting module) is ready to use straight away. Simply drag and drop the cabinets you need to include in your quotation and the pricing will be automatically calculated. Then orders can be added for extras such as handles, accessories or trades.

The cost of the Ayrmont ARMS CRM is deliberately set up to be user-friendly and cost-effective with a one-off implementation and fee then a monthly licence fee. The main difference between Ayrmont ARMS and other similar systems is Ayrmont has no limits on users, templates, projects or quotations so you won’t find an exponential jump in pricing if you need to add in any of these areas.

The set-up process is highly individualised, so the system is set up for your business, in the way that works for you. The Ayrmont ARMS CRM is backed by locally-based ongoing support personnel for help with troubleshooting or any issues. In addition, users are provided with plenty of helpful videos with step-by-step instructions on how to use the system and helpful tips to increase your knowledge base.

Ayrmont is currently running a special offer with a discount on its usual implementation costs. Please reach out for more information.

A day with Elica https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/05/10/a-day-with-elica/ Thu, 09 May 2024 20:00:04 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26554 ]]> Our AIDT group was invited to spend the day with Elica at its showroom and factory in Fabriano, Italy together with a fabulous dinner the night before.

We were treated to an amazing dinner by the seaside in Numana on the evening before our visit then we were up early the next day, ready to spend some time immersed in the world of Elica. Elica is distributed in Australia through Residentia Group.

Elica-AIDTWith a strong reputation world-wide for quality rangehoods, Elica is known for pushing the boundaries of design and functionality. Established in 1970, Elica has become one of the leading manufacturers of rangehoods and other kitchen appliances and has established a strong position within Europe and the USA. Through its partnership with Residentia Group, Elica is set to make inroads into the Australian market in 2024/25.

Elica-AIDTHaving won multiple awards for its product designs, Elica has now launched a new innovative product into the market (as displayed at this year’s EuroCucina). LHOV is a three-in-one appliance that combines an hob, oven and ventilation in one functional and beautifully-designed appliance.

Elica-AIDTOur day with Elica began with a corporate briefing where many of our group marvelled at the company’s domination of the market in other countries. We were interested to learn that Elica employs more than 2,500 people across 7 production sites around the world. The company holds more than 900 patents, with 300 focussed on cutting-edge technology and 600 on new design solutions. In terms of market share, Elica is a powerhouse with a 51.8% share of the Italian market and an 11.2% share of the European market. It has won a host of prestigious design awards for its innovative and beautiful products.

Elica-AIDTThen, we split into two groups with Group 1 visiting the Research & Development facility and Group 2 spending time in the showroom with Elica’s Chief Design Officer, Fabrizio Crisà. After a short coffee break, the groups swapped.

Hearing from Fabrizio personally about his passion for design, love of functionality and dedication to maximising both was a wonderful experience and he openly shared with both groups his process of design and some of the inspiration he used to kick-start a number of his most well-known products.

Elica-AIDTFollowing a delicious lunch, we stopped into Elica’s assembly factory and broke into smaller groups to tour this facility. It was a great opportunity to see behind the scenes and gain a further understanding of the dedication of the company to excellence across all aspects of its business.

In Australia, Elica products are distributed by Residentia Group.

Salone-del-Mobile-Milano-2024Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, said: “The 62nd edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano exceeded all expectations: it was a record edition. We saw exceptional results, thanks to the confidence of an ecosystem that, yet again, recognised the international leadership of the event.

During the process of redesigning the format and the experiences, we kept both industrial and manufacturing and the visitors as our focus, in a bid to stimulate both sides with a stunning Cultural Programme capable of creating new connections between the powerful roots of the design culture and the definition of new future visions.

The success of this edition is also due to the success of the Kitchen and Bathroom Biennials, in which research and development are the synthesis not only of innovation processes but are also an expression of the ability of both sectors to intercept the habits and desires of daily living”.

A day in Brera with The Mentors of Design https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/05/07/a-day-in-brera-with-the-mentors-of-design/ Mon, 06 May 2024 20:00:20 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26592 ]]> Last month, as part of AIDT’s tour to Salone del Mobile.Milano, we spent a very enjoyable morning with a guided tour through the Brera Design District with our good friends Michele and Leonardo from The Mentors of Design.

We met at the Valcucine showroom and spent an enjoyable half-hour with some hands-on time to discover the kitchen displays. A representative from Valcucine gave us a welcome talk and introduced us to a number of the displays. For Milan Design Week, the Valcucine showroom was transformed into a stage where the kitchen collections were presented in a new light. The event, entitled “Architectural Scenarios” celebrated the integration of kitchens with architecture thanks to the participation of renowned architecture and interior design studios such as i29, ARRCC, and Neri&Hu.

“Architectural Scenarios” was selected as one of the top 10 projects shortlisted for a Special Communication Mention at the Fuorisalone Award 2024.

Next, we visited the Agape showroom for its “The shapes of Matter” installation. We delved into the function of beauty and the beauty of functionality with contributions from Patricia Urquiola, Benedini Associati and Alessandro Andreucci, as well as introducing a new collaboration with Vismaravetro.

From Agape, we took a short walk to the Memphis apartment, the original home of Ettore Sottsass in the 1980s where he would regularly hold talks with colleagues, designers and architects about new forms of expression. The Galleria today is a treasure trove of unique pieces that balance a flamboyant mix of pop culture and ironic classicism to create a disruptive aesthetic that sits somewhere between kitsch and elegance.

Just across the road, we encountered the Marsotto gallery and showroom – an exquisite space dedicated to marble, showcasing skilled craftsmanship and design culture to create pieces that are truly extraordinary. Marsotto works with top international designers to create collections of iconic products which also have an everyday-use application, with a modern aesthetic that underscores the luxury and beauty of this natural product.

Our last stop was the showroom of Rossignoli, a bicycle design and manufacturer in the heart of Milan whose premises became an installation for Swiss company USM Haller. USM’s modular furniture was installed within the showroom to highlight the countless possibilities of the spheres, tubes, connectors and colourful panels. An interactive exhibition invites visitors to explore the many facets of the design classic’s rich history.

The Mentors of Design is a consultancy service which provides a range of services to homeowners, businesses and other designers worldwide. One of the most important is Shopping Assistance as it is a service that can be provided remotely.

Michele and Leonardo have lived and worked in Milan for many years and know the city intimately. They thrive on making new relationships with designers in other countries and enjoy learning about new cultures and visions. Their Shopping Assistance consultancy was developed, above all, to allow them to search for pieces for unique design opportunities that enhance domestic spaces and beyond.

Our AIDT tour group was incredibly lucky to have Michele and Leo to walk with us through Brera and show us some of their favourite spaces. We look forward to doing it again next year!

Gollinucci products are distributed in Australia through Lincoln Sentry and the company is known for its innovative, quality products for internal organisation, storage and bin systems. It produces a wide range of highly functional objects that feature top-class design. Gollinucci is known for its “people first” principles and its support of environmental sustainability, and all its products are proudly made in Italy.

Gollinucci-AIDTGollinucci has a long association with a variety of Italian designers to ensure beauty and functionality combine seamlessly across its product range. It has cooperated with designers such as Lucci Orlandini Design, Paolo Nava and Fabio Casiraghi, young designers from ISIA Faenza, Benzima Design Studio, and Andrea Federici.

We started the day by dividing into three groups – Group 1 went with Gollinucci CEO Giacomo Gollinucci for a tour of the factory; Group 2 enjoyed a presentation on the company with Sara Ronconi from Customer Service; Group 3 spent time exploring the showroom with Roberto Gradari, Sales & Marketing Manager.

Then each group rotated through the three activities until all were complete and we enjoyed a coffee and morning treats before boarding the bus to our lunch destination.

Gollinucci-AIDTWe were treated to an amazing seafood lunch at the stunning La Spiaggia bar and restaurant which is located right on the Adriatic Sea and enjoys a beachfront location that provides seaside views from every vantage point.

Very well fed and watered, our group re-boarded our bus for our travel to the next location! Thank you to the team at Gollinucci who organised the day so seamlessly and to our very good friends at Lincoln Sentry for facilitating our visit.

Gollinucci-AIDTWe were very lucky to have the winners of the Lincoln Sentry “Legends of Lincoln” competition travel with us on tour – Logan and June from CK Joinery & Kitchens, and Andrew & Suzanne Pinto from GGS Glass. Congratulations to all and we hope you enjoyed your prize!

A day with Pedini https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/04/25/a-day-with-pedini/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 20:00:19 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26482 ]]> Our AIDT group was fortunate to spend the day with tour sponsor Pedini at its facilities in the very pretty coastal city of Lucrezia.

Pedini has a proud history of Italian design and craftsmanship having been established in 1957 in Lucrezia which is in the province of Pesaro in Italy. Originally the company was an artisanal business specialising in kitchen furniture but today its product offerings extend to the kitchen, bathroom, wardrobes and living spaces.

Pedini AustraliaPedini is a powerhouse that exemplifies the “Made in Italy” commitment which is underscored by its many certifications for manufacturing methods and material/component selection. It has a global presence in more than 60 countries worldwide and is renowned for its environmental consciousness and collaboration with world-renowned designers.

Pedini-AIDTOur day started with a presentation from Pedini’s Export Sales Manager, Simone Gennari followed by coffee (a must, of course!). Then our group had time to explore the extensive Pedini showroom which spans over two levels at the company’s headquarters.

Following this we were taken on a tour of the factory premises which gave our manufacturer guests time to marvel at the organisation and capabilities of the factory and our designer guests a chance to experience the “behind the scenes” of how the products are brought to life.

We were taken back to the showroom for more exploration time over the 2nd level followed by a group photo and then we hopped onto our bus to go to lunch. Lunch was a delicious affair at a local restaurant in a private room where we dined on two different types of pasta, a selection of grilled meats and salad. Entirely sated, we boarded the bus for the trip back to our hotel.

It was evident from all that we witnessed the passion and commitment of the Pedini family to upholding its reputation for quality and innovative design. We are very appreciative of the time all the staff took out of their day to make us feel welcome and host us at their premises.

iGuzzini at Light+Building 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/04/01/iguzzini-at-lightbuilding-2024/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 19:00:59 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26133 ]]> At Light+Building 2024, iGuzzini curated an immersive multi-sensory experience to present its perspective on light.

With 65 years of experience in architectural lighting, the brand teamed up with Studio GEZA for the exhibit and Artec Studio for the lighting design and scenography at the Frankfurt fair. Together, they crafted an immersive space showcasing iGuzzini’s innovative approach to light, driven by connectivity, technology, optics research and environmental responsibility.

An imaginative yet detailed presentation allowed visitors to delve into the catalogue of products and explore the latest innovations for 2024.

iGuzzini-Light+Building2024“Light that moves” epitomises iGuzzini’s core philosophy that summarises the concept of connected, responsive, intrinsically sustainable and deeply human-centric lighting, which permeates each collection and resonates through the architectural and interior projects illuminated by iGuzzini.

This concept was expressed in a new brand identity, which showcased iGuzzini’s innovative approach to creating light that transforms spaces, moves people, enriches cultures and ignites imagination.

iGuzzini-Light+Building2024In this setting, the iGuzzini light was the fifth element, enriched and diffused through a series of installations that showcase their technical, graphic and architectural capabilities. A light experience punctuated by three islands set within an ephemeral architecture, which can be viewed from both inside and outside the stand.

The entrance to the stand was marked by a sinuous, eye-shaped structure composed of 154 Light Shed Linen units, representing a biophilic version of the Light Shed system that encapsulates the present and future of the brand. The eye that welcomed visitors not only represented iGuzzini’s perspective on light but also reflected the individual, subjective viewpoints that each visitor holds regarding the objects and spaces surrounding them.

iGuzzini-Light+Building2024The lights were designed to incorporate smart technological features within a space designed for a seamless integration of functions and a harmonious relationship with people and nature: from living to working areas, from intimate to communal spaces.

The stand’s exhibit highlighted the main strategic areas of application of the iGuzzini products: Culture, Working, Hospitality & Living, Contract, Urban and Infrastructures.

Inside the stand, three light installations seamlessly combined iGuzzini’s humanistic and technological research with educational spaces focused on individual products and on optics designed and manufactured in-house. The collaboration with lighting designer Maurici Gines, founder of Artec Studio, resulted in the creation of a wonderful set design aimed at demonstrating to architects, interior designers and lighting professionals the tangible advantages the brand provides through an immersive, multi-sensory experience.

The exhibition space also featured an area dedicated to Connectivity Beyond Light, inviting visitors to explore the iGuzzini range, which includes functions beyond illumination, such as sound absorption and the integration of sensors, video cameras and loudspeakers into the luminaires.

Bettisatti at Maison&Objet 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/03/01/bettisatti-at-maisonobjet-2024/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 19:00:49 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25685 ]]> At Maison&Objet 2024, Bettisatti showcased two stunning collections – its new Marmilla lamps from the Isoipsa collection, and the Intarsia mosaic collection.

The Marmilla lamps are designed by Donata Mariasole Betti. The floor-standing version features a Carrara white marble base that contrasts with its linear stem. The ray of light cast up to the marble lampshade from the base is not only an unusual design element but also brings out the veining of the marble, further accentuating the beauty of this collection.

The Marmilla lamp is available in floor, pendant and table versions, with the table lamp also available in a rechargeable version (via USB) and a metal stem made of aluminium. The light refraction highlights the play of geometrical components, creating a soft, warm and adjustable beam of light. The suspended “lightness” of the “hat” is a clever visual trick which is enhanced by the upward-facing light beam projected onto it.

Continuing the company’s focus on natural stone, Intarsia is a collection of marble inlays and mosaics which are fully customisable in size, material and compositional design. The elements serve to reinterpret marble in a contemporary fashion, featuring compositional designs that include serialised geometric characters and eclectic surfaces that have an almost dreamlike dimension. The collection harnesses inspiration from the world of nature with both free-flowing formations as well as distinct shapes that represent different creatures.

Bettisatti srl was established by Donata Mariasole Betti, Michele Citti and Valentina Satti and operates from premises in Tuscany, Italy. The studio specialises in projects across a huge scale and focusses on designing spaces for art and for living.

The 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/23/the-62nd-edition-of-salone-del-mobile-milano/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 19:00:37 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25842 ]]> The 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano will take place at Rho Fiera Milano from 16th to 21st April with a bold, new approach to industry trade fairs.

Evolution and innovation are the key words for the next edition of the trade show which has designed an open ecosystem that seeks to optimise the layout and visitor paths within the showground, thanks to the contribution of neuroscience and the organiser’s adoption of a “human-at-the-centre” philosophy.

This year the organisers have undertaken a total redistribution of the pavilions with a view to grouping the exhibitors by content and visitor targets so as to amplify the value and meaning of the visitor experience. The 2024 event will bring together more than 1900 exhibitors, including 600 young designers under 35 years and 22 design schools. The internal exhibitions include Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Workplace3.0, S.Project, EuroCucina with FTK (appliances), the International Bathroom Exhibition and saloneSatellite.

Within the single-storey layout, a number of aesthetic paths are planned with access to experiential spaces and rest/relaxation zones including a circular bookshop and arena, and a new design library.

Salone-del-Mobile-MilanoIn the EuroCucina/FTK and International Bathroom Exhibition pavilions, visitors will enjoy a new exhibition layout – reworked by Lombardini22, a leading group on the Italian architectural and engineering scene. The studio has harnessed neuroscience to improve the visitor experience, analysing paths as well as the location and distribution of exhibition stands and rest areas. Following extensive virtual testing, a loop-shaped circuit was chosen to create a more intuitive, simpler-to-navigate system – widened pathways will improve navigation, while cultural installations and quiet areas help visitors take a moment when needed. The organisers claim it will now take only a 640 metre walk to visit all the stands (unlike 1.2kms in previous years).

Salone-del-Mobile-Milano
SaloneSatellite 2023 (Photo Ludovica Mangini)

SaloneSatellite, celebrating 25 years in 2024, has moved to pavilions 5-7 with the theme of “Connecting Design Since 1998”. To celebrate this wonderful milestone, there is also an exhibition at the Triennale (16-28 April) that showcases the history of the exhibition.

Salone-del-Mobile-MilanoThree significant installations are planned. “Interiors by David Lynch. A Thinking Room” will be installed in pavilions 5-7. Two identical and mirrored “thinking rooms” are conceived as symbolic doors that must be entered in order to immerse oneself in the event.

Salone-del-Mobile-MilanoThe second installation “Under The Surface” is designed and produced by Accurat, Design Group Italia and Emiliano Ponzi for the International Bathroom Exhibition and will be displayed in pavilion 10. This installation engages visitors in an immersive sense and pushes them to reflect on the subject of water sustainability.

The third installation will sit right in the centre of EuroCucina as a large, fluid stage that will host six independent and international food magazines to present an original vision of the present and future of the ingredients nature has to offer. “All You Have Ever Wanted To Know About Food Design in Six Performances” is the title of this installation involving six projects that unfold on a day-by-day basis. The magazines involved are Family Style (USA), L’Integrale (Italy), Linseed Journal (UK), Magazine F (South Korea), The Preserve Journal (Austria) and Farta (Portugal).

Morning Talks and Round Tables will be held at 11am each day in the Drafting Futures Arena, designed by Formafantasma who has reused the seatings from previous shows.

For those attending the show – ticket sales are now open!

Guide to Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/16/guide-to-salone-del-mobile-milano-2024/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 19:00:07 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25786 ]]> The 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano will be held from 16-21 April and will feature the special exhibitions EuroCucina, FTK (appliances) and Salone Bagno (bathrooms).

This year the organisers have chosen to re-think the layout strategy and rearrange the pavilions in what they describe as ensuring “the most efficient times and ways for visiting as well as optimising the routes through the spaces to enrich the experience and ensure maximum visibility and accessibility of all exhibitors”.

EuroCucina and FTK – Technology for the Kitchen

Salone del Mobile.MilanoThis biennial exhibition is the industry’s guiding hand when it comes to trends in design, materials and application. Leading international kitchen manufacturers and design houses come to Milan to showcase the latest ideas for the kitchen space. The overwhelming focus is on sustainable material selection, highly technical solutions and creative design solutions for this space with it sown specific demands. FTK will showcase the latest in smart elements and home automation in the section devoted to domestic appliances and high tech applications. This year you will find EuroCucina and FTK in pavilions 2 and 4.

Salone Bagno

Salone del Mobile.MilanoAlso known as the International Bathroom Exhibition, this year Salone Bagno will be based in pavilions 6 and 10 (the pic above was taken in 2022 when the exhibition was in pavilions 22 and 24). The focus of the exhibition is trends and ideas in the name of relaxation and wellbeing, where new functionality meets technology with the overall goal to improve the quality of life of the users. Sustainability discussions are at the forefront of the exhibition, with an emphasis on innovative solutions. Form and function are still important, shining a light on options for water saving to reduct consumption and ways to lower environmental impact without sacrificing efficiency or aesthetics.

Salone del Mobile.Milano/International Furniture Exhibition

Salone del Mobile MilanoPavilions 14 and 18

These pavilions will focus on the best of the best in Italian design with leading names on one side and emerging designers on the other. The Mentors of Design is a consultancy service which provides a range of services to homeowners, businesses and other designers worldwide. One of the most important is Shopping Assistance as it is a service that can be provided remotely.

The Mentors of DesignMichele and Leonardo have lived and worked in Milan for many years and know the city intimately. They thrive on making new relationships with designers in other countries and enjoy learning about new cultures and visions. Their Shopping Assistance consultancy was developed, above all, to allow them to search for pieces for unique design opportunities that enhance domestic spaces and beyond.

“Today, more than ever, Milan is a city full of opportunities and it is easy to access if you know how to get around. Within a relatively limited space you will find a concentration of designer furniture, lighting, home décor shops and art galleries that are truly unique. It is our goal to open these spaces to designers and homeowners around the world,” they say.

The Shopping Assistance service is there to support the international designer to curate the best design response for their client. Michele and Leonardo bring their understanding of design and architecture to ensure their expertise enhances each project. They can assist in making purchases by being on the spot to locate the perfect piece, provide advice on what to buy (and, sometimes, what not to buy), they will listen to your design brief and your client’s needs, and provide in-depth knowledge of the furniture and interiors sector. They can conduct research and provide local knowledge that adds value to your project.

The Mentors of Design apply their professional gaze to each project and can assist with unbiased opinion and advice that supports the needs of a designer located overseas. Their connections within the Milan design world span from furniture and accessories to home décor elements and works of art. In addition to his other qualifications, Leonardo also has specific skills as an Art Advisor and Art Consultant.

The Mentors of DesignMichele and Leonardo personally oversee the purchase of each piece and will look after the entire process, from negotiating discounts to order management, from logistics to shipping and tracking.

If you will be in Milan for the upcoming Salone del Mobile.Milano in April please reach out to schedule a “design day” with The Mentors of Design. “Milan has its own specific soul and hidden beauty,” say Michele and Leonardo. “The insights provided by local experts can make a big difference in the success of a project”. Nover celebrates 70 years! https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/12/nover-celebrates-70-years/ Sun, 11 Feb 2024 19:00:44 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25729 ]]> The Nover story: where it all began…

Nover Constructions Pty Ltd commenced business in 1954 operating from the rear of a small cottage in Putney, in suburban Sydney. There were two partners originally, Norm Overmeyer and Ken Cowley. Norm was a civil engineer and Ken a chartered accountant, Company secretary of Dreyfuss & Co, wool buyers. The name Nover is derived from Norm’s name.

The company was established as a civil engineering contractor undertaking a variety of building and engineering contracts around the city of Sydney.

An important part of this early period was the securing of a contract to lay gas pipes for Sydney’s early supplies of what was then known as “towns gas”. Over time the company also became involved in the refurbishment of apartment blocks, mainly in the city. As Norm focused on the construction side of the business, Ken, through earlier contacts in the wool broking business, was being offered a variety of products by several Japanese Trading Houses. It was uncommon to import product from Japan in the late fifties and sixties.

However, some of the products offered were of such quality and price that the partners commenced importing small quantities of product, mainly focused on the building industry. Items such as compressed air lines, as used by jack hammers, truck tyres, decorative plywood and laminates.

As time passed interest in prefinished plywoods for use in cabinet and internal house door construction developed, and this led to the establishment of a business to manufacture hollow core cabinet doors, comprising a 2” x 1” timber frame with prefinished ply cut to size and glued over to create a light and stable door panel.

This business was originally called Associated Credit Builders Pty Ltd but subsequently changed its name to Austel Industries Pty Ltd.

The 1980’s saw major changes for the group. The kitchen business was deemed to compete with Nover and the family decided to sell. The purchasers were R N Jones and Co who operated a kitchen business in Queensland under the name of Transpac. This left the family focused on Nover, a branch was opened at Bateman’s Bay then closed and moved to Nowra then finally to Wollongong. Another of Ken and Ailsa’s children, Lynn, joined the family business in 1984.

Formica laminate and Coronite board had become Nover’s leading brands as the business became more specific to the kitchen industry which was still evolving quickly. Colours and finishes were changing regularly and wood grain finishes on board were coming into their own, changing forever laminates place in the kitchen and furniture industry.

Ken and Ailsa travelled widely, constantly visiting trade shows in Europe and the United States. Over the next few years more branches were established, Tuggerah, Penrith, Revesby (Condell Park) and Port Macquarie all opened their doors. These were followed by Orange and Wagga Wagga.

The company’s product range had greatly expanded and became a complete supply solution to kitchen manufacturers and shopfitters. Pionite laminate from the USA was now Nover’s leading brand of laminate.

1994 saw the “official” retirement of Ken Cowley as managing director and the appointment of Stephen, although Ken remained active in the business for some time after that. Following Ken’s death in November 2000, Stephen was appointed Chairman of the group.

In January 2003 a small joinery supplies distribution business, Bettaform, was purchased in Bundaberg. 2003 also saw the purchase of Cabinet Hardware Supplies in Queensland adding branches at Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Virginia and the Gold Coast, as well as the purchase of Eastern Joinery Supplies in Bayswater, Melbourne.

ISH 2025 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/09/ish-2025/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 19:00:57 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25731 ]]> Planning for ISH 2025 is underway with the world’s leading trade fair for HVAC + Water revealing a new concept with eight solution fields.

ISH will be held from 17-21 March 2025 at Messe Frankfurt and will focus on a broad spectrum of subject areas within the sanitation, heating and ventilation industry with a specific focus on innovations that contribute to tackling climate change. The result is a new, modern and future-oriented approach, which puts the focus of the fair more sharply than ever before on visitors and their needs.

From bathroom designers, to specialists for heating and air-conditioning technology, to experts for renewable energies and building-services control systems, the spectrum of visitors to ISH in Frankfurt is no less diverse than the spectrum covered by the industry. Under the motto, ‘Solutions for a sustainable future’, ISH 2025 will offer all participants a new, transparent and modern event structure.

ISH 2025The centrepiece of the new concept comprises eight solution fields:

  • Bathrooms
  • Water-bearing systems
  • Installation
  • Heat generation
  • Indoor air
  • Intelligent building management
  • Software
  • Sanitary & HVAC products

At the cutting edge, the subjects of sustainability and digitalisation play an important role in all fields of ISH. “In principle, the event is undergoing a kind of metamorphosis from a straightforward product exhibition to a solution-oriented application show. To this end, the new solution fields will ensure improved orientation and exact matching between the demand and supply sides. This is the basis, the foundation for a modern and powerful international meeting place”, explains Stefan Seitz, Director ISH Brand Management.

ISH 2025The inclusion of the new Hall 5, which was opened in 2023, is the key to the new ISH structure in 2025. Accordingly, the new concept will also be reflected by the layout of the fair in the individual exhibition halls. In this connection, Seitz adds, “In the future, content and knowledge transfer will take place in close thematic proximity to the relevant exhibitors, thus creating a stronger link between the presentations of innovative solutions with best-practice examples and information about developments in the market. After all, both are directly connected, and an advantage in terms of specialist knowledge is of indispensable added value for all visitors.” Accordingly, the themes will be determined at an even earlier stage, and also take account of the interests of international visitors.

New hearing test requirements https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/06/new-hearing-test-requirements/ Mon, 05 Feb 2024 19:00:50 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25650 ]]> Thanks to our friends at ACFA for this very important reminder about SafeWork NSW’s requirements for audiometric testing from 1st Jan 2024.

Clause 58 – Audiometric Testing was introduced under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulation 2017 following an extensive period of public consultation throughout 2022 and applies to all businesses who require workers to frequently use hearing protection as a control measure for noise that exceeds the exposure standard.

ACFA-hearing-testsFor new workers, a baseline hearing test must be completed within three months of commencing their employment with follow up monitoring hearing tests required at least every two years during their employment.

For all workers, a follow-up monitoring hearing test is required at least every two years during their employment.

Employers are responsible for organising and paying for hearing tests for their workers – an appointment can be made at any audiology clinic and no doctor’s referral is required. The results of all hearing tests should be shared immediately with employees and the documentation kept confidentially in a secure location and provided to the employee when they finish their employment.

The hearing tests establish a base line which allows for the early detection of hearing loss and enables measures to be put in place to prevent further hearing loss. It also helps businesses assess the effectiveness of workplace noise controls.

Employers should identify and assess noise sources within their workplace to determine if there is a risk of hearing loss to workers and apply risk controls which eliminate or minimise the risk of hearing loss.

ACFA has a range of resources for members to help navigate this new legislation which are available through the member portal or by contacting membership@acfa.net.au or by talking to one of ACFA’s Workplace Advice Team Members on 1300 342 248.

Maison&Objet Report https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/01/30/maison-object-report/ Mon, 29 Jan 2024 19:00:13 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25583 ]]> Our good friend and interior designer, Erika Forster from Maison DLP recently attended the Maison&Objet fair in Paris and brings us her insights from the show.

Another strong showing at Maison&Objet with a fabulous display of interior products and innovative solutions. As seen in past years at iSalone in Milan, this year I noticed home perfumes/personalised scents and “home fragrances” taking a strong position. There were so many stands at Maison & Objet either showcasing their own scents or offering customised scents.

I see so many applications for this but particularly for any business with a showroom or physical location. A signature scent for a brand gives a business that something special with which to create an iconic and memorable experience for their customers.

In terms of innovation, this year I saw a real mix of ideas – nothing starkly new but that’s not surprising as we’re still rebuilding confidence after the pandemic. I’m seeing a distinction with brands either committing to colours or committing to neutrals – but rarely both.

Maison&Objet-reportTactility is still strong across the board and throughout the sector – both visual and sensorial textures are everywhere. Particularly with neutrals, I’m seeing an injection of subtle colouring and/or a pattern to help elevate it beyond the background.

Maison&Objet-reportWe know the majority of European brands have been focussed on reducing waste and looking at their environmental impact for many years so it’s no surprise to see that on display at Maison & Objet. Some brands are now committing to 100% recycled material product line offerings and others making beautiful objects from excess production of base materials within their industries.

Maison&Objet-reportThe idea of handcrafting is predominant – whether the “real deal” or the aesthetic of the handcrafted. There’s more attention to detail in wooden furniture. Tapering and curves to edging or rough and rugged detailing. Yes, we’ve seen this with some high-end companies but the prevalence of this development across the fair is notable.

Maison&Objet-reportI discovered a couple of concept zones which were interesting as many aimed to shift mindsets and take a deeper look at some areas of the home that are traditionally more functional. I saw a lovely mix of materials, textures and colours to make these spaces more interesting and engaging, again, with the sense of smell being thoughtfully included.

As a kick-start show for 2024, I found Maison & Object to be very thought provoking and I’m keen to see what iSalone and Milan Design Week in April will contribute to our ongoing design conversation. Enjoy this slide show walk through of the show.

Ceramica Sant’Agostino new Milan showroom https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/01/22/ceramica-santagostino-new-milan-showroom/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 19:00:15 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25548 ]]> Check out the newly-opened Milan showroom of Ceramica Sant’Agostino, located in the heart of the Brera Design District on Corso Garibaldi.

The company’s latest and most iconic collections are displayed in large panels inside a space that is spread over two levels but is treated as a single “architectural box”, designed by the Calvi Brambilla studio.

Ceramica Sant'AgostinoThe location was carefully chosen, in such a strategic location, to underscore the company’s commitment to maintaining its position as one of the leading Italian players in the ceramic sector. Founded almost sixty years ago, today Ceramica Sant’Agostino continues its path in the pursuit of creativity on the Italian and international design scene.

Taking inspiration from Franco Albini’s design for Line1 of the Milan subway, the graphic sign of the red handrail has been reinterpreted in Calvi Brambilla’s design. Not one, but two horizontal lines, architecturally rendered with dark titanium finish tubes, become the hanging supports for the display panels of Ceramica Sant’Agostino’s collection.

Ceramica Sant'AgostinoThe result is pure visual effect with the parallel tubes running along the entire perimeter of the showroom ground floor and, from a functional point of view, enabling a very flexible display of the product: the tubes, in fact, allow for a variable modularity of the panels, adaptable to different sizes, but also adjustable in number depending on the presentation that one wants to display. The frames supporting the product can decrease or increase as in an evocative museum system.

Large display frames were designed to hold both slabs with a single finish as well as tile compositions in smaller formats to best showcase the solutions that the ceramic product can offer within different architectural solutions.

Ceramica Sant'AgostinoIn the centre of the exhibiting floor, adjacent to the system of tubulars and wall frames, three “totems” take pride of place. These are compositions of different volumes and collections, covered in porcelain stoneware and enhanced with other materials such as lacquer and glass, which combine to create real three-dimensional mood boards.

The lower floor, designed as a more operational area, houses the material library, organised on a fabric wall system displaying the entire catalogue, and two large tables to explore samples and create pairings.

Architects, designers, planners, those lovers and curious about ceramic products will be able to enter this exhibition venue not only to view Ceramica Sant’Agostino products, search for the best solutions for their projects and receive advice and technical assistance, but also at exhibitions and events dedicated to architecture, which will make it a culturally vibrant meeting point throughout the year.

Road to Salone 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/12/22/road-to-salone-2024/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 19:00:57 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25459 ]]> The Salone del Mobile.Milano international promotional tour for the 62nd edition of the trade fair is underway, taking in seven European and American destinations.

The Salone del Mobile.Milano has positioned itself internationally with a road trip geared to promoting the upcoming edition – scheduled for 16th to 21st April 2024 in Milan. It’s goal is to discuss the future of home living along with the world’s design community.

The roadshow is a unique opportunity to promote all the events and pass on initial information regarding the format and content of the 62nd Milan edition of iSalone: with a reworked layout and exhibition paths – again informed by a wide range of contributions at round tables attended by companies and stakeholders – will put visitors and their needs increasingly at the centre.

The biennial EuroCucina and International Bathroom Exhibition will be back, the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of SaloneSatellite will include a great exhibition in the city and a structured programme of installations and talks will be held in the trade fair pavilions, to foster open discussion between business and design culture, in keeping with the formula that ensured the success of Euroluce and The City of Lights, a luminous and illuminated palimpsest of exhibitions and international cameos.

The tour will provide an opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing the design world and on what home living will look like in the future, thanks to the involvement of special guests who will discuss and promote design culture as narrated and interpreted by the Salone, highlighting its quality, know-how, practical and aesthetic value and human and emotional component.

The tour started in the French capital with the designer Patrick Jouin, while the London leg featured the British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the German designer Konstantin Grcic appeared in Berlin, Luca Nichetto and the young Danish designer Felicia Arvid in Copenhagen.

The key themes are the importance of the power of vision and innovation in the large events and industrial design world, the need for an increasingly human-centric and inclusive culture, focused on communities and individuals, the need for multidisciplinary dialogue between different cultural and geographical areas and, last but not least, sustainability, a field in which the Salone del Mobile has already notched up a major milestone, ISO 20121 certification for sustainable events management, achieved at the latest edition.

The tour is also being promoted via the Salone digital platform highlighting the expanded opportunities within a digital ecosystem, allowing the tour to be followed online thanks to in-depth analysis, interviews, and backstage moments shared on the Salone website and its social media channels.

TKBB will be in Milan in April 2024 to absorb all the wonders of Milan Design Week so look out for special editions of the blog coming your way!
