Established in 1954 originally as a civil engineering business by Norm Overmeyer and Ken Cowley. The company name “Nover” is an amalgamation of Norm’s first and last names. Nover was heavily involved in construction through the 1960s with the partners renovating and refurbishing a number of blocks of flats throughout Sydney as well as one-off construction projects such as the Visitors Stand at Drummoyne pool. This soon led to Nover establishing a joinery business which was used to supply cabinetry to the construction arm of the company.

Norm sold his share of the business in the late 1960s and Ken took over as the sole owner.

Nover-70-yearsKen’s background was in the wool industry, having spent many years working for a firm of wool brokers. As is the case today, products are not sold directly but through an established trading house. When his contacts in these trading houses learnt of his association with the building industry, Ken was offered the opportunity to take supply of and resell a number of building products. Initially this was a hodgepodge of items (even including items such as tyres and air hoses) but gradually this broadened to include a general range of building products.

“The joinery industry was very different in those days,” explains Steve Cowley, son of Ken, and now Managing Director of Nover. “There was no real cabinet hardware to speak of, for example, and all the cabinets were timber framed”.

Nover-70-yearsSoon Nover began to import High Pressure Laminate and this range of products soon expanded to become the backbone of the business for the next 40 years. “As the industry changed over time, Nover grew its product lines and became more of a wholesaler specialising in joinery products,” adds Steve.

By the early 1980s the wholesaling side of the business had taken priority so the family made a decision to exit the joinery business which was sold to a third party. This happened soon after Steve joined the business in 1976 and he and Ken set about specialising in the cabinet making and joinery industries.

“I had a background in accounting so, when I first started, I was working in what you’d call the accounts department,” says Steve. “But I quickly realised that wasn’t for me so I made a sidestep into product management and sales which was a much better fit”.

Of course, the cabinet making and joinery industry was very different at the time Steve joined the company. “It was a far simpler industry in those days,” he recalls. “This was even before metal runners were the norm – it was all plastic components. And manufacturing was a very different ball game”.

The-Nover-Story
The Nover showroom and headquarters in Eastern Creek, Sydney

Being such a specialist in this area, Nover was often leading the way and an early adopter of new products and new technologies. Its business has always been based on sitting across a variety of product families and very much driven by what joiners wanted and needed in their factories. “We sit across most sectors of the industry and our product range is the broadest of any supplier in the industry,” says Steve. “We have a plan but we’ve also allowed for organic growth that is driven by the industry and the feedback we receive from customers”.

As a market leader, Nover saw an opportunity for the supply of hardware and panels as well as consumables and ancillary products such as handles. But the product range has always included a variety of wood-based panel products including decorative surfaces and low-pressure melamine, plus a decent selection of hardware which has expanded as new technology and expectations from the design community required.

“Our customer base is extremely broad,” Steve explains. “It’s made up of kitchen manufacturers, cabinet makers, furniture manufacturers, shop fitters, joiners and fit out companies so our goal is to stock and sell all the major components needed across this diverse customer base”.

As a business, Nover invests heavily in sourcing its products preferring to establish exclusive relationships where possible. Steve says Nover seeks to source products that match the philosophy of the business, and have the quality required for our Australian market, which they are able to sell at a price that matches the expectations of its customers. “We make sure we have a presence at international design shows and hardware shows, and we travel to visit factories as these all form an essential part of our research and staying in touch with new developments,” says Steve.

Having been in the industry for so many years, Steve has seen first-hand how much it has changed with the advent of technology and new manufacturing methods. “The biggest change I’ve noticed is that joinery businesses used to make everything – doors, benchtops, carcasses, the lot. As we moved away from laminate benchtops we’ve needed to work with specialist stonemasons and then specialist door painters, and glass splashbacks. So, now joinery businesses have to interact with so many more third parties to complete projects,” he explains.

The-Nover-StoryWhen asked to predict the future of the cabinet making industry, Steve points to more specialisation requiring a narrower skill set as we compartmentalise the industry further and further. But, overall he sees the size of the industry growing, as will the size of projects being undertaken.

In terms of Nover’s plans for the future, Steve says the company intends to remain at the forefront of sourcing new products and supporting those products already in the family. “Whenever we have the opportunity of course we will try to be first,” Steve laughs. “But those opportunities don’t come along too often. Any vacuum left when a new product comes onto the market is very quickly filled and so our product range will evolve as it has to”.

Steve points to the introduction of two new product families which he feels rounds out Nover’s offering to the industry. The company has recently secured an arrangement with Salice for its hardware and ColourPyne for its range of board products. The company is well established with branches across the three eastern states of Australia and intends to remain 100% family owned.

When asked what he thinks makes Nover unique in this crowded part of the market Steve is quick to point to its employees. “Our philosophy is that our people are so important,” he says. “We employ well over 100 people in ten different locations and the average length of service is eight years – with some at up to ten or even 20 years”.

We’re excited to see what the future will bring for the Nover company, the Cowley family and the company’s employees so watch this space!

Stecco outdoor shower from Fima Carlo Frattini https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/07/25/stecco-outdoor-shower-from-fima-carlo-frattini/ Wed, 24 Jul 2024 20:00:09 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=27506 ]]> Aptly named, this is the cutest outdoor shower we’ve ever seen: Stecco (the Italian name for stick insect) is part of the Ingriro collection designed by Lorenzo Damiani for Fima Carlo Frattini.

The shape and form of Stecco makes an immediate connection to naturea nd to the animal world. It was named for its looks – as an insect is known for its ability to disguise itself and its remarkable ability to camouflage among branches and leaves, so Stecco’s vaguely anthropomorphic shapes fits harmoniously into open-air spaces.

Stecco-Fima-Carlo-Frattini
The new Stecco outdoor shower in the burgundy red finish.

The main body is a metal tube that rises from the ground and ends with the housing of the pullout hand shower. It stands on two thin legs that evoke the shape of a slender animal with a long and elegant silhouette, just like Stecco.

Stecco-Fima-Carlo-FrattiniThe main feature of the shower is the freedom of movement and positioning. This is a feature common throughout the entire collection and serves to showcase the formal purity of the lines of each element. Water is turned on and off using a practical foot switch, while the removable hand shower – the “head” of the stick insect – is designed to create an easy grip and can be pulled until it reaches the desired height.

The Ingiro collection by Fima Carlo Frattini designed by Lorenzo Damiani. L-R: Stecco showerhead in the new burgundy red finish; Ingiro freestanding showerhead with table in sand grey finish; Ingiro shower column in sand grey finish.

As with all products in the Ingiro collection, Stecco is available in steel finish, grey, blue and green, and now offered in burgundy red and sand grey, two new colours that match additional outdoor environments. Burgundy red is a rich pigment that tends towards red ochre with a hint of burnt brown, while sand grey with more neutral shades is warm and intense with a hint of beige that recalls natural fabrics such as hemp and jute.

Bringing a lovely playfulness to outdoor spaces, Stecco represents the design philosophy of Fima Carlo Frattini perfectly. The company continually seeks to express unique and innovative solutions in search of design, quality and functionality with particular attention on the environment and eco-sustainability.

Laminex turns 90 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/07/15/laminex-turns-90/ Sun, 14 Jul 2024 20:00:18 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=27336 ]]> Happy birthday to iconic Australian manufacturer Laminex, celebrating an impressive 90 years!

The Laminex story began in 1934 in suburban Melbourne where Robert Sykes started Laminex in a small tin shed. Over the years, this business grew to be one of Australia’s leading manufacturers.

Laminex-90th-birthdayWhile the iconic Australian brand has grown a lot over nine decades, its ethos has always remained the same – the belief that every Australian deserves great quality products with great quality design.

Laminex-90th-birthday
Advertisement from the 1950s

The evolution of Laminex began after World War II, when Sykes was captivated by a new trend appearing overseas for decorative laminates. He travelled to the US to research the fabrication of decorative laminates and began producing Australia’s first interior décor product range in the early 1950s. With Australia’s cities booming, new house builds thriving and a demand for affordable furniture escalating, Sykes’ foresight to innovate was astute.

Laminex-90th-birthdayThe Cheltenham plant in Victoria was established in 1952, which featured a cutting-edge hydraulic press to enable rapid production processes and an expansion of the product range to meet market demand and improve revenues. It was here that Laminex became the only producer of thin high-pressure and more recently compact laminates in Australia and New Zealand – which still stands today.

Laminex-90th-birthdayFor the past 90 years, Laminex has consistently set the benchmark for material innovation, leading to an extensive product range that has expanded to include modern laminates, acrylic surfaces, wall panelling products and more. For many Australians, Laminex products have been a fundamental part of their households – bringing durability, functionality, and personality to the heart of the home.

Laminex-90th-birthdayThis year commemorates the remarkable 90-year journey of Laminex. This significant milestone is a celebration of the evolution of being the very fabric of Australian design. Over the past nine decades, Laminex has created a range of innovative and diverse brands that are serious multi-taskers, leading the way in expert quality, design-led materials for contemporary living. With an extensive portfolio across Laminex, Formica, Surround by Laminex and HI-MACS, there is a carefully curated product for everyone and every space.

Laminex-90th-birthdayThe success of Laminex products can be attributed to an ongoing focus on product and manufacturing innovation, and a pursuit of continuous improvement, elevating performance across its entire spectrum of operations. Throughout the company’s 90 years in business, Laminex has continually adapted, reinvesting in the skills, safety, performance, and capacity of its plants through new equipment, training, and development.

Laminex-90th-birthday90 years on, Laminex takes pride in knowing its customers can take comfort in the fact that the Laminex products used in their homes are not only design-led and durable, but also support the Australian economy and are backed by incredible sustainable credentials. The design world may be forever evolving, but one thing that remains the same is Australia’s love for Laminex – it isn’t just owned and manufactured in Australia; it’s loved in kitchens, bathrooms and beyond, nationwide.

Lustra & Fiola from Ethimo https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/06/25/lustra-fiola-from-ethimo/ Mon, 24 Jun 2024 20:00:27 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=27222 ]]> Ethimo and Luca Nichetto create new inspirations in decor for adding lighting and character to outdoor spaces, a mix of traditional knowhow and contemporary design.

Lustra, the new floor lamp, and Folia, the original stool-table, become ‘symbols’ of how a timeless material like wrought iron can be reworked to personalise and enhance today’s living spaces.

Ethimo-Folia-LustraWhen used to create functional and ornamental pieces and objects, wrought iron brings with it an elegant legacy of Italian craftsmanship. This capacity has always been considered an art that has preserved its relevance over time, thanks to experimentation and innovation evolving to adapt to the different architectural and decorative trends.

Ethimo-Folia-LustraLustra is a floor lamp with a strong theatrical presence and innate elegance that rises to a height of two metres, with a one-metre diameter and a cap in blown glass.

Ethimo-Folia-LustraThe special working of the iron makes it a decorative element that transmits a welcoming warm mood; when lit, as well as doing its job providing diffused ambient lighting, it also creates a special eye-catching play of light and reflections that turn it into a true focal point in any setting. Ideal for illuminating dining areas, living spaces and zones for relaxing in the open air in any season, Lustra is perfectly waterproof and resistant to the elements.

Ethimo-Folia-LustraFolia is a stool that, if needed, becomes a side table, an outdoor accessory born out of a desire to design a shape to be used either as seating or as a table, to create a practical, versatile piece of furniture that offers simple, fluid, multiple uses, adapting to any situation or setting.

Its name comes from its design, a delicate leaf pattern inspired by traditional iron doors that defines the seat or table top, while the “stalks” form the structure and comprise its base.

Ethimo-Folia-LustraFolia can therefore be designated the role of either a stool or a side table, or, depending on the context, a (small) decorative sculpture to be used as extra seating or a handy additional surface, ideal for a conversation or relaxing corner.

Stackable and available in different colours, Folia is an element with subtle visual impact, yet sturdy safe construction.

Chalet S featuring Antolini https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/06/24/chalet-s-featuring-antolini/ Sun, 23 Jun 2024 20:00:17 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=27194 ]]> Antolini features predominantly in this new Chalet S project at Val Gardena, in the heart of the Dolomites – a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site.

Chalet S, where residential architecture combines traditional alpine building techniques, featuring exposed wooden structures and sloping roofs with refined, detailed interior design, is a space in which natural stone is one of the undisputed protagonists.

Antolini-Chalet-SThis stylistic signature can be found even in the garage, which is both the access point to the home and a real wooden jewel box embellished with three large backlit slabs of Patagonia Original “Extra”, a Natural Quartz which is part of the Exclusive Collection offered by Antolini.

Antolini-Chalet-SA marvel of nature set among wooden staves, in which the dance staged on its surface by feldspars, crystal, and black tourmaline – the three minerals that compose and distinguish Patagonia Original “Extra” – announces the textural leitmotif, which characterises the chalet’s interiors, marked by the balanced dialogue between wood and the Verona-based company’s natural stone.

Antolini-Chalet-SOne of the first environments – which in addition to leading to the actual dwelling on the two floors above, leads to the spa area – features the warm tones of wood and gold sublimated by the anthracite tones of Black Ice, a marvellous granite enlivened by the natural presence of brighter inclusions and streaks, which is the real star of the shower and bath area, where it is installed both on the floor and on the wall.

Antolini-Chalet-SOn the upper floors, where lighter tones enhanced by abundant natural light prevail, the dialogue between wood and natural stone continues, tempered by the whiteness of the plastered walls. Moving to the second floor, reserved for the home’s most intimate rooms, Bianco Latte triumphs. A snow-white stone that nature has embellished with purple-hued mineral infiltrations has been chosen for the bathrooms to clad the bathtubs, shower walls and the area dedicated to the freestanding, sculptural tub. On the other hand, for the bathroom located on the top floor, Azul Cielo was chosen for both the shower and the countertops. This marble features delicate celestial hues, the colour of which helps break up the verticality of the room.

Antolini-Chalet-SOn both the second and top floors, the house opens up to the surrounding mountains and slopes thanks to the full-height windows that extend across the main facade of the chalet, flooding the dining area and living room with light, in which the star feature is the wooden structure above. There is a seamless transition to the kitchen, at the centre of which is a monolithic island that, following the aesthetics of the house, combines wood with Cristallo Bianco “Wow”, a highly durable Natural Quartz that almost entirely envelops the volume, creating the sensation that it is suspended above the floor. An island that shines with its own light – thanks to the backlighting, glows through the translucent crystal. An induction cooktop, as well as a wine cellar on the side, are set into the surface as if into a block of stone. Cristallo Bianco “Wow” is also featured in the tops of the wooden cabinets that run along the entire back wall.

Ernestomeda K-Garden https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/05/06/ernestomeda-k-garden/ Sun, 05 May 2024 20:00:41 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26580 ]]> As seen at this year’s Fuorisalone, this is the stunning new K-Garden from Italian kitchen design company Ernestomeda.

Created by architect Giuseppe Bavuso, the company’s art director, K-Garden has been developed and designed to shape new locations for open-air socialisation, with an increasingly broad, international approach.

Ernestomeda-K-GardenK-Garden is a design intended for those who embrace indoor and outdoor living; to underscore the art of open-air cooking, to rethink and restyle those places where people get together to share relaxation and eating experiences.

Ernestomeda-K-GardenThe new K-Garden collection is an evolution of the K-Lab project, a model with exquisite design and a technical soul which includes equipped work counters that denote an efficient, informal kitchen. In this version K-Garden retains the same characteristics but with the addition of multipurpose workstations comprising hobs, grills, BBQ and everything needed for outdoor cooking.

Ernestomeda-K-GardenThe project’s distinctive features are its high degree of customisation and the exceptional modularity of all its components. K-Garden consists of a series of free-standing open elements which can be combined and aligned to form real fully equipped islands, around which people can share the pleasures of outdoor eating.

Ernestomeda-K-GardenAll materials used in the project have been meticulously chosen not only to deal with the different weather conditions typical of outdoor Ernestomeda-K-Gardenareas but also to maintain perfect empathy with the kitchen’s natural surroundings, such as the use of wood which, suitably treated, gives the kitchen strength as well as an agreeably warm texture, tough, rustproof stainless steel (AISI316), and various kinds of stone, intrinsically in perfect harmony with the open air world.

Ernestomeda-K-GardenThe K-Garden model is grounded in the design philosophy shared by all Giuseppe Bavuso’s collections for Ernestomeda: in his projects, technology and impressive performance are always combined with exquisite, unique details which give kitchens the unmistakable homely warmth typical of a specific approach to design.

Ernestomeda-K-GardenSo K-Garden is not an outdoor product with a cold, impersonal spirit intended merely to provide the kitchen’s technical functions: it is a genuine furnishing system, which generates a mood and bestows personality on its location.

Guest Post: Alternatives to Engineered Stone https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/01/23/guest-post-alternatives-to-engineered-stone/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 19:00:36 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25596 ]]> There are three main brands of solid surfaces in Australia – Staron, Corian and Hi-Macs. All have been utilised in the building industry in Australia for many years and have applications across both residential and commercial projects.

With confirmation late last year of a future ban on engineered stone surfaces, putting pressure on industry not to specify the product in new projects, we reached out to our friends at Austaron Surfaces, suppliers of the Staron brand, to discuss alternatives. Here’s what they said…

Staron-Solid-SurfaceSolid surface offers a silica-free, seamless and visually striking solution for kitchen surfaces. Unlike traditional materials such as granite or laminate, solid surface countertops are manufactured to be non-porous, allowing for easy maintenance and resistance to stains. This inherent resistance to moisture and bacteria makes solid surface an ideal choice for kitchen environments where cleanliness and hygiene are paramount.

One of the key advantages of solid surface is its ability to be moulded into virtually any shape or size. This flexibility in design allows for the creation of seamless and flowing benchtops that not only look stunning but also eliminate the need for unsightly seams or joints. The absence of visible seams not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen but also makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze, as there are no crevices for dirt or bacteria to accumulate.

Beyond its visual appeal, solid surface countertops offer a tactile experience that sets them apart from other materials. The zero-silica, smooth, non-porous surface feels luxurious to the touch, and the material’s uniform composition ensures that it remains consistent in texture and appearance. This consistency allows for a cohesive design throughout the kitchen, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.

Moreover, the versatility of solid surface extends beyond countertops. Solid surface is often incorporated into sinks, splashbacks and kitchen islands as well as decorative pieces, providing a seamless flow of design elements throughout the space.

In terms of colour options, solid surface provides an extensive palette to choose from. The material can be customised to match or complement any kitchen colour scheme, offering a level of design flexibility that is often unparalleled. Whether your clients prefer a classic, timeless look or a bold and contemporary statement, solid surface countertops can be tailored to suit individual tastes and style preferences.

The long-term benefits of solid surface make it a wise investment for many homeowners. Its durability, resistance to stains, and ease of maintenance ensure that solid surface countertops will stand the test of time, providing enduring beauty and functionality in the heart of the home.

Hettich: Outdoor Kitchen Oasis https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/01/16/hettich-outdoor-kitchen-oasis/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 19:00:12 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25477 ]]> Featured on designwithhettich.au, Studio Lux Interiors’ alfresco kitchen project harmoniously extends the indoor kitchen area to the outdoor alfresco, creating an aesthetically cohesive space.

Many outdoor kitchens are designed to fulfill the desire for a tranquil space for entertaining friends and family, seamlessly integrating with the overall design of the home. Interior Designer and founder Annebel Goode of Studio Lux Interiors reached out to the manufacturing supplier and joinery experts at Euro Alfresco for her personal outdoor kitchen project, especially fitting with their known reputation as specialists in quality appliances and outdoor cabinetry. This collaboration resulted in the creation of a stunning alfresco kitchen environment, enhancing the outdoor space for both family and guests.

Hettich-Outdoor-KitchenA key consideration in designing a space that effortlessly transitions from indoor to outdoor was pivotal. Laminex’s ‘Classic Oak’ compact laminate was chosen to harmonise with the interior flooring and design elements of the inside kitchen, extending this aesthetic continuity to the outdoor space. This choice not only ensures a seamless visual flow but also contributes to the natural ambiance, which selection of light oak complements the surrounding white elements.

Euro Alfresco undertook this project with meticulous planning, prioritising the integration of high-quality fixtures and fittings capable of withstanding the unpredictable outdoor climate. Simultaneously, Studio Lux Interiors’ preferences were accommodated throughout every stage of the design process, ensuring the kitchen aligned seamlessly with Head Designer Annebel’s requirements, colour palette, and, most importantly, her distinctive style.

Hettich-Outdoor-KitchenThe focal point when entering the Alfresco space is the 4 Burner Built-In BBQ and Hood from Euro Alfresco. This 4-gas burner unit, perfectly tailored for residential outdoor kitchens was an ideal selection for the Adelaide-based project. While its presence may not immediately catch the eye, a gentle press on the oak laminate panels below the cooker unveils concealed cabinet space housing a convenient Pull-Out bin. The seamless access is facilitated by Hettich’s push-to-open push-rod mechanism and soft-closing hinges, ensuring the secure opening and closing of the cabinetry doors. This discreet design choice eliminates the need for handles, resulting in a cleaner, more minimalist appearance that integrates with the Alfresco environment while also mitigating the risk of erosion.

Hettich-Outdoor-KitchenThe Hettich Bin.it Duo II Pull-Out bins contribute to the kitchen’s discreetness by concealing various waste items behind closed cabinetry door. The bins can be effortlessly pulled out to full extension whenever needed, showcasing their functionality and versatility. The inclusion of the bin is a perfect fit for Studio Lux Interiors’ Dream Alfresco Kitchen, especially as it is part of Hettich’s Alfresco Kitchen Collection, one of many products specifically recommended for outdoor use.

Naturally, a complete kitchen space includes essential elements like the sink and a beverage cooler. Positioned on the left, the beverage cooler serves as a dedicated storage unit for cooling beer, wine, and other beverages, creating an ideal pairing with the BBQ cooking experience. Moreover, the space extends with the inclusion of the swimming pool and the expanses of lush grass beyond the Alfresco space which is why it can rightfully be deemed an Outdoor Oasis by and for Studio Lux Interiors.

Antolini at Marmomac 2023 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/11/24/antolini-at-marmomac-2023/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 19:00:21 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25000 ]]> Last September, in Verona Italy, the 57th edition of Marmomac was held and Italian company Antolini featured an amazing stand of products.

Alberto Antolini, CEO of the historic company founded in Verona in 1956 explains: “We are very proud to be participating in the 2023 edition of Marmomac, one of the natural stone industry’s most prestigious events and an extraordinary opportunity to share our passion and our discoveries with both industry professionals and those who truly appreciate beauty.”

Antolini’s top products were showcased on a stand that intentionally distanced itself from the “normal” trade fair displays with a temporary installation which aimed to display rather than show emotional surfaces by discovering the infinite potential of the natural stones in Antolini’s collections.

The resulting space had a distinctly museum-like atmosphere, ready to be explored and discovered by visitors. Carefully curated by Alessandro La Spada, who is also the creative mind behind some of Antolini’s most eclectic collections, the stand was enclosed in a neutral monolith – a white box – that conceals its contents from view, revealed only at the entrance.

A play of transparencies is made possible by the translucence of Cristallo Vitrum, a natural marvel that evokes the image of a sheet of glacial ice. Visitors were welcomed in a reception area that is itself an element of wonder, centred on a featured stone; Patagonia Vitrum, natural quartz embellished with different types of natural minerals that are book-matched and displayed on the wall and in the sculptural reception counter. Backlighting adds to its impressive visual impact.

The visitors journey continues into the Museo Infinitum, a gallery where natural stone becomes a work of art. Finishes from the Textures+ Collection were enclosed in refined, polished brass frames to become sculptures displayed offset from the wall. To the right of the gallery was a backdrop that seems to float in the air, with stones from the Exclusive Collection set flush with the wall as tru works of art. The reflective surface of the ceiling duplicates and mirrors the exposed surfaces, similar to the effect of bookmatched installations.

Visitors were wowed by the display of crystals from the Antonlini collections, showcased on cantilevered, backlit displays. Two sculptural seats, also made of crystal, offered the ideal location for contemplating the expressive power of these natural stones. The starring role is reserved for Antolini’s third natural stone Amazonite, a quartzite featuring enchanting turquoise tones that contrast dramatically with the emerald green background, alternating with warmer and more neutral nuances.

Margraf at Marmomac 2023 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/10/11/margraf-at-marmomac-2023/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 19:00:00 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=24570 ]]> Margraf was in the spotlight at Marmomac 2023 with a new stand in the outdoor area and a new business partnership with Basaltite®.

The stunning 300sqm stand was designed by Raffaello Galiotto featured the innovative Velata Collection, with the display inside showcasing Margraf’s capacity to handle marble like a fabric.

Margraf-MarmomacRaffaello Galiotto also designed the Velata Collection itself, which can be seen in a large glazed space on one of the long sides of the stand. It features items of furniture covered with Bianco Covelano marble that has been shaped to look like fabric gently blowing in the wind. Cutting-edge design work with parametric software and processing with CNC machinery were complemented by expert manual finishing by in-house staff.

Margraf-MarmomacHanging from the curved wall are six drapes made from coloured marble (Cremo Italia, Breccia Bohemien, Fior di Pesco Carnico®, Grigio Carnico, Breccia Imperiale and Nero Pagoda) that appear to be billowing in the air. They represent the wide range of materials in the company’s catalogue and demonstrate its ability to produce “tailored” creations that can satisfy even the most demanding clients.

Margraf-MarmomacThe exhibition space is open on two sides and the entire display is designed tell a story that can be read in different ways depending on your view. It sums up the unique traits of Margraf, which can cover every step in the production chain.

Margraf-MarmomacInside, Basaltite®, – a grey, natural volcanic material – is laid in a free-length pattern on the floor and in an overlapping and offset arrangement on the wall. Centre stage in the welcome lounge for visitors goes to exclusive Fior di Pesco Carnico® marble, for which Margraf has the only existing quarry in the world. It can be seen on the counter of the bar in book-match style (Ipogeo Collection), in a 3D wall covering (Fluctus Collection) and on partition walls with brise-soleil rectangular tiles.

Margraf-MarmomacFinally, the furnished space looks out onto a garden area outside, where eight blocks of superior marble are on display (two of Fior di Pesco Carnico®, two of Breccia Bohemien, two of Polaris Gold and two of Travertino Alabastrino). They are all parallelepipeds and they are laid out in a regular grid to form a small maze. They look like they are floating above a bed of grass, which calls to mind the natural characteristics of the authentic stone.

Ceramica Bardelli at Cersaie 2023 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/09/28/ceramica-bardelli-at-cersaie-2023/ Wed, 27 Sep 2023 20:00:04 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=24425 ]]> Ceramica Bardelli showcased its collection of Italian-designed ceramic tiles at this week’s Cersaie show, held in Bologna, Italy.

Established in 1962, Ceramica Bardelli’s factory is located in Milan and its collections are designed by some of Italy’s best designers including Giò Ponti, Piero Fornasetti, Marcel Wanders, Dimore Studio, Studio Pepe, Storage Milano.

Caleido

Ceramica Bardelli-CersaieThis handmade collection was inspired by the shapes and colour effects seen inside a kaleidoscope and is available in four colour schemes reflecting the natural primary elements of fire, earth, water and air. A common colour – ivory – is repeated across all the collections with the tiles alternating between gloss and matte for additional effect.

Clayborn

Ceramica Bardelli-CersaieA collection of floor tiles that utilises AI “generative design” to create shades and patterns. The product is the result of an unusual collaboration between Bardelli Group and Clayborn whisky that sees AI used to reproduce the texture and organoleptic properties of the clayey water in the Westerwalt caves.

Cromatica

Ceramica Bardelli-CersaieA collection of colours, sizes and designs that cross the colour universe by focussing on monochromatism which enhances colour as a key element. Cromatica is presented in vivid trending colours in a variety of sizes and shapes including hexagonal floor and wall tiles and diamond tiles.

Fili

Ceramica Bardelli-CersaieA decorative cadeaux in porcelain stoneware, Fili is a re-issue of a collection first released in 1984. The collection showcases textures of colour that touch without colliding and aims to represent the trends of colours and textile weaving of the time, in a combination of trendy shades and tones.

Play

Ceramica Bardelli-CersaieThe Play collection is funny and attractive with a strong emphasis on fantasy and creativity. In playing with design and anticipating trends, Play has strong references to the ’90s with a modern and immersive concept that transcends nostalgia. The four symbols commonly seen on a controller or joystick make up the dynamic collection – triangle, circle, square and cross.

Tubes

Ceramica Bardelli-CersaieInspired by the milled panel or ribbed wood seen commonly throughout architecture, Tubes is designed to enhance the beauty of three-dimensional decoration but with a focus on the ceramic element. Available in six colours – black, white, green, night blue, orange terracotta and beige nude – the tile can be specified with a ribbed or flat-smooth surface.

HIA new Managing Director https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/09/11/hia-new-managing-director/ Sun, 10 Sep 2023 20:00:27 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=24298 ]]> Retiring HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe said goodbye to HIA and the housing industry last month after 45 years of tireless work for an industry he loves.

Graham’s distinguished career in the building industry started when he left school, joining HIA in the late 1990s after taking on a technical role. He went on to represent HIA on a wide range of committees including state advisory councils and building code and standards committees.

In 2018 he was appointed Managing Director, a role he now hands over to Jocelyn Martin as the new HIA Managing Director.

‘HIA has offered me so many opportunities and great scope to learn,’ said Graham. ‘We have extraordinarily good teams at HIA. It’s a fantastic association; it really is a family.’

From early in his career, Graham recognised that mentoring the next generation of apprentices and trades was a key step in maintaining the professionalism of the industry. ‘The industry relies on the passing of information backwards and forwards,’ he said. ‘I had help from well-respected and knowledgeable people when I was younger, and so I’ve tried to pass on what I know to others.’

With a diverse career path, Jocelyn Martin steps into the HIA Managing Director’s role with a wealth of experience having worked for HIA since 2014. ‘What attracted me to HIA was the strong sense of advocacy,’ she reveals. ‘After working in the education sector, this was a familiar space to be in. But it was a lovely surprise to see how we capture member views and develop policy. This aspect of the Association is so important.’

Jocelyn’s focus will be on maintaining engagement across the various sectors within the housing and building industries to ensure HIA continues to meet the needs of the residential building industry.

‘We need to ensure we are developing policies and approaches to advocacy that hit the mark and benefit the sector as a whole,’ she says. ‘We also want to understand the pain points in business so we can better support our members and help them to reduce their risks.’

Furthermore, Jocelyn intends to ensure HIA plays a central role in innovating, responding to trends and influences, and supporting connections and relationships within the industry. ‘If we can maintain our reputation as a respected and influential authority, and appeal to new generations and a broader component of the industry, I will be very satisfied.’

The company’s stand at Interzum was designed around a vaulted gallery to introduce visitors to the world of Arpa Industriale and Fenix at the show in Cologne. An intertwining passage designed by Zanellato/Bortotto created an immersive pathway that showcased the materials’ core values of high quality, beauty, functionality and sustainability.

Of particular note is the new Tuet deep surface and its attention to detail and innovation which sees it suitable for multiple applications, both vertical and horizontal.

Tuet Deep Surface-ArpaIn presenting Tuet at Interzum, Arpa Industriale introduced the furniture industry to its first Deep Surface.

Tuet Deep Surface-ArpaInspired by the Piedmontese reedbeds running along the Tanaro river, Tuet transforms each furnishing scene into an evocative composition characterised by light and shadow, which varies according to the time of day. Its ribbed surface provides a changing tactile experience, combining a pleasant touch with a wavy sensation.

The waves of Tuet can be arranged in both directions, favouring different feelings of movement and spatial extension: from the bathroom to the kitchen to the living room. The deep surface is available in two wood decors: Caravella Light and Caravella Dark. For Interzum 2023, a preview of new versions made with new patterns and décors extend the Tuet world.

Tuet Deep Surface-ArpaThe deep surface was showcased in a spectacular corner wall, made to enhance the richness of its surface, and within the walls of the two meeting rooms located within the stand at the show.

Phil outdoor kitchen by Ethimo https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/06/22/phil-outdoor-kitchen-by-ethimo/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 20:00:09 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=23598 ]]> Designed in collaboration with Gordon Guillaumier, this is Phil the new outdoor kitchen from Italian company Ethimo.

Ethimo’s focus has always been on the creation of comfortable, open-air spaces that set the trend for quality outdoor living, utilising the creative spirit for which the company is known. The goal is to simplify the art of outdoor cooking, without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.

Phil-Outdoor kitchenPhil is the design challenge met by Ethimo and Gordon Guillaumier that has seen the development of an unconventional design, thanks to its special ‘nomadic’ configuration which creates an original way to arrange and outdoor cooking environment. With an elegant, yet informal look, Phil is the essence of contemporary cooking with a relaxed environment with a high degree of individualisation and personalisation.

Whether located on a portico, patio, terrace, poolside or city balcony, this unusual element makes any setting, however small, easy to use and allows the kitchen area to be managed simply, functionally and quickly. Thanks to its sizes and technical features, Phil squeezes all the main kitchen activities into a compact ergonomic space, ensuring maximum functionality.

Constructively, Phil is stable and sturdy, and able to withstand weather and other elements, but it is made suitable for the home thanks to its “soft” and unconventional design.

95 cm in height and 75 cm in diameter, Phil is made up of a single cylindrical base in metal and is available in Olive Green and Sepia Black. With refined teak details, it comes in three possible configurations: with sink, induction hob and barbecue. These ‘round islands’ can co-exist with their different functions, creating circular movement and activities, or be used on their own.

Phil-Outdoor kitchenThe sink, complete with a handy work surface/top in teak, is fitted with fixed feet, while the two cooking options have cables and are also available on wheels, meaning they can easily be moved to where they are needed, emphasising the dynamic versatile character of this project.

With Phil, Ethimo and Gordon Guillaumier provide a new kitchen experience, creating a concept that is the perfect balance of freedom and formality, able to adapt to settings of different sizes and uses and the natural choice for completing open-air spaces.

Lapitec, the sintered stone for outdoor environments https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/06/13/lapitec-the-sintered-stone-for-outdoor-environments/ Mon, 12 Jun 2023 20:00:04 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=23193 ]]> Lapitec is perfect for a series of outside uses, including paving and walkways, facades or portions of them, swimming pool cladding, benches, table tops, fixed or mobile kitchens, barbecue stations, and even for applications on yachts or ship decks.

The large size slabs, which in 12 and 20 mm thicknesses are 1540 x 3440 mm, allow great flexibility of use, thanks also to the material’s high performance.

The sintered stone is indeed resistant to atmospheric conditions, UV rays, temperature changes and abrasions, so much so that the product comes with a 25-year durability guarantee. It’s entirely silica-free composition, the result of a mixture of 100% natural minerals compacted through a multi-patented process, makes it an ecological material that is non-porous on the surface and therefore ideal for prolonged contact with water, even salty or with chlorine added.

Lapitec comes in a range of solid colours, from Bianco Assoluto, creams, greys, warm colours and blacks to the elegant veins of the Musa collection. With new colours launched in 2023, it is a surface that integrates perfectly with the outdoor environment, while the available finishes can reach the high coefficients of friction (even R13) that are indispensable, especially for flooring and swimming pools.

There are therefore many uses in the world of design and outdoor furniture, where Lapitec works alongside important brands in the sector to supply tops for dining tables or cooking stations with different types of accessories and functions.

In addition to the above features, there is the ‘full body’ characteristic of sintered stone, which is identical in every point and maintains a constant appearance when milled or processed, ensuring maximum aesthetic cleanliness, together with functionality and high technical performance.

GUEST POST: Don’t Get Drained With Drains https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/06/01/guest-post-dont-get-drained-with-drains/ Wed, 31 May 2023 20:00:24 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=23251 ]]> It’s common for many clients to want to save money regarding their renovations. But when should you push your clients to consider checking their plumbing before the job starts?

In this guest post, Optimised Plumbing Services discovers why checking pipes and drains before any renovation could end up saving building owners thousands and ultimately putting a drain on their renovation project.

There is no way to know with the naked eye if everything is in order when it comes to pipes and drains. Building owners will often not alert you to a problem that could ruin your hard work with an immaculate renovation literally crumbling underneath. Calling in a plumbing professional is always advisable before any renovation that could affect pipework.

“We had one instance when a professional builder began demolition of the downstairs bathroom, during the work, the bathroom upstairs was only being used, ” says Joseph Lahoud, Director of Optimised Plumbing Services. “Unknown to the builder, the lower pipes were blocked from pre-existing issues, and the pipes on the lower ground were slightly damaged during renovations. Unfortunately, the water flowed down and into the walls. This caused overnight flooding downstairs, which ruined the carpet in other rooms. A devastating, yet avoidable situation, for the builder and homeowner.”

Plumbing advice - Optimised Plumbing

Tips For Building & Construction Professionals

 • Hire a professional plumber to inspect the building’s drains thoroughly. Expert plumbers have the necessary knowledge and tools to identify any existing issues. This early expense could reduce the risk of significant plumbing issues during the renovations, which could ultimately blow a budget for the owner.
 • Check for any signs of water damage or leaks around the drains or plumbing fixtures, this could indicate a blockage. Also, ask the homeowner if they have experienced any issues with their drains and plumbing. This could indicate a problem that perhaps has been ignored for many years. Making this standard practice can ensure the project you are starting goes to plan.
 • Check the sewer line for any signs of damage or blockages. A video inspection can help identify any issues with the sewer line that may not be visible to the naked eye.
 • Ensure the plumbing system is up to code and meets all relevant regulations and standards. This is important for the safety and health of the occupants of the building, as well as to avoid any potential legal or financial issues.

Plumbing advice - Optimised PlumbingIf There Is A Leak?

If you discover a possible leak or a pipe problem, the good news is the building owner or homeowner has many options for repair that can save their renovation/building budget.

Resealing can help to repair existing leaks in drains or pipes. This can save builders the cost of replacing entire sections of plumbing. Resealing is often less expensive than replacing pipes or drains and can help to extend the life of the existing plumbing system.

Resealing pipes can also help prevent further damage to the plumbing system by sealing cracks, gaps, and other pipe defects. This can help to avoid more costly repairs down the line and can help to extend the life of the plumbing system, the renovation, or the construction.

This practice also can be done without the need for excavation, which can save professional builders time and money. Traditional methods of repairing or replacing plumbing often require digging up the pipes, which can be costly and time-consuming for all involved.

Plumbing advice - Optimised PlumbingQuestions To Ask Building Owners

Sometimes the building owner cannot understand the seriousness of a slight inconvenience regarding their plumbing. Having a list of questions is a good idea to assess if the pipework in the building or home you are renovating is not showing signs of stress. The top five questions to ask include:

 1. Do you notice any problems with your plumbing? Foul smells, overflowing, slow draining, or gurgling sounds after flushing or water draining from sinks, etc.?
 2. Have you tried unblocking any drains lately or used over-the-counter drain cleaning products?
 3. Have you had any plumbing issues in the past?
 4. Do you have drains outside that commonly become blocked after a downpouring of rain?
 5. Do you have any indication of leaking or broken pipes? Mouldy patches on walls or carpets? Or lush green patches of grass even after a dry spell?

If you suspect the drains will put a drain on your project, it’s highly advisable to call in the experts for a thorough check before the renovation begins. This could save the homeowner money, stress, and time regarding their dream renovation, and ensure your high-quality work is not impeded with an unforeseen problem.

Hettich: How Sustainability is Transforming Cabinetry Hardware Fittings and Manufacturing https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/05/15/hettich-how-sustainability-is-transforming-cabinetry-hardware-fittings-and-manufacturing/ Sun, 14 May 2023 20:00:16 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=23284 ]]> Hettich’s latest White Paper, ‘How Sustainability is Transforming Cabinetry Hardware Fittings and Manufacturing’ examines the impact of sustainability on cabinetry hardware fittings and manufacturing, delving into how the growing demand for sustainable products is transforming the industry.

The White Paper comes after the fourth-generation family business recently announced its new campaign for sustainable practices called “Act today, think of tomorrow.”, reflecting the company’s long-standing commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and addressing environmental concerns on a daily basis, starting at the employee level.

Hettich-WhitepaperThe White Paper highlights that recent studies looking at Global Warming paint a grim picture for the future and businesses need to adapt a practical sustainability strategy that is not only easy to understand and implement, but also is also pertinent to their operations and settings.

For cabinetry hardware fittings, various factors come into place such as energy consumption, waste management, operational safety, worker rights, environmental friendliness and social responsibility.

Hettich-WhitepaperHettich has already accomplished a lot in terms of sustainability, but they have committed to doing even more. Their key targets include avoiding CO2 emissions, continuously reducing remaining emissions, conserving resources, improving energy efficiency, optimising the recyclability of their products, and promoting biodiversity at their operating bases. Hettich also offer climate change awareness workshops, incentives for using climate-friendly transportation, and works with suppliers to find alternative sustainable materials or improve the recyclability of Hettich products.

A day with Hettich https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/05/08/a-day-with-hettich/ Sun, 07 May 2023 20:00:06 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=23262 ]]> As part of my trip to Interzum, I was invited to spend the day at Hettich’s facilities in Germany prior to attending the show. It was an incredibly special experience to be given such a behind-the-scenes look into the company.

Our day with Hettich started with a short bus trip to the company’s headquarters in Kilchlengern. In this small town, Hettich employs close to 3000 people and is the town’s major employer.

HettichWe started with an introduction to Hettich with Oliver Finke who shared his passion for the business in which he has worked for 22 years. We then split into two groups and started with a tour of the AvanTech You and ArciTech factories which allowed us a glimpse into the technology and electronic prowess of the assembly plants. We also saw the large logistics centre which manages and tracks all shipments in and out of the facility.

Next, we swapped with the first group and toured the InnoTech Altira and Quadro factories.

HettichThe first thing we noticed was how amazingly clean all the factories and assembly plants are. For a business that works primarily with steel, it would be easy to assume the factories would be dusty and dirty but the reality is very far from this idea. Surprisingly quiet, the factories run with German precision – the workers are calm and focussed and the rate of manufacture is a sight to behold.

As a family-owned business, Hettich has the ability to filter profits back into the business and this investment in the company is clear to be seen with new buildings and new facilities currently in progress. Constant innovation is at the forefront of most business decisions, with investment in technology to keep the process as efficient as possible and maintain production levels and standards.

HettichAfter a lovely lunch in the Hettich canteen, we boarded the bus for a trip to the Sensys hinge production facilities in an adjacent town. Again, we broke into smaller groups for our tour through this factory which was as clean and well-organised as the morning’s two factories. The rate of production here is around 1 hinge per second so there is a huge behind-the-scenes functionality built into the process to deliver the componentry – via large air ducts – to each production line so there is a constant flow of production.

HettichFollowing this tour, we had a short bus trip to the showroom and factory of German kitchen manufacturer Nolte. Nolte is one of Hettich’s largest customers and we enjoyed free time to wander through the very impressive showroom and marvel at the designs.

This evening’s dinner was held at a fantastic private brewery, complete with a museum showcasing the history of beer production set out in a number of smaller halls off the main dining area. We enjoyed sampling the local beer and a lovely meal, all in great company. Happy, tired and replenished, we returned to the hotel for a good night’s rest before our trip to Cologne the next day.

Interzum – here we come!

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Hettich has set a goal for its sites to become Climate Neutral by 2030. The company is already taking steps towards this target, such as promoting employee mobility, transitioning to electric and hybrid cars for its fleet, and implementing necessary travel and digital meetings. Hettich’s most recent sustainable practices include the new C3 production facility in Kirchlengern, Germany, which exceeds the energy efficiency requirements defined in the German Building Energy Act (GEG) from 2020 by 84%.

Hettich’s commitment to sustainability is not just a slogan, but a core value that is reflected in its operations around the world. The company has also installed sprinkler systems to reduce water usage and help to prevent fires. Finally, it has added electric car charging stations to encourage the use of sustainable transportation options among employees and customers.

Casalgrande Padano Casalgrande Padano

Colourful porcelain stoneware tiles adorn the eye-catching floor creating beautiful geometric patterns and bringing the charming ambience of the past into the future. This choice was inspired by the original late 19th-century floor found while renovating the basement.

Casalgrande PadanoWhat looks like a porcelain stoneware carpet is created by combining 20x20cm porcelain stoneware tiles from the Unicolore collection in Giallo Ocra, Grigio Cenere, Grigio Perla, Rosso Mattone, and Verde.

Casalgrande PadanoThe colours of the porcelain stoneware tiles also appear on the walls, furniture, and the lockers, creating a playful and dynamic atmosphere across the spaces used by the children. On the other hand, this chequerboard composition clearly outlines the different areas while maintaining visual continuity.

Casalgrande PadanoThe Unicolore collection is the result of advanced technology and research. These full-body, vitrified floor and wall tiles are ideal for public and commercial spaces. These colourful porcelain stoneware tiles by Casalgrande Padana are modern, versatile, and in line with the latest trends. Laminam featured in Palazzo BN in Lecce https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2022/11/16/laminam-featured-in-palazzo-bn-in-lecce/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 22:40:41 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=22008 ]]> Palazzo BN is an iconic example of conservative restoration carried out with cutting-edge technological materials, including Laminam.

In little more than a year, architect Lucia Bianco and engineer Luciano Ostuni carried out a thorough renovation, following the restoration down to the smallest detail: “As if we lived there”. The project represents a recovery project that combines private entrepreneurship, public interest and local workers, returning the former Banco di Napoli not only to the tourists who will inhabit it, but also to the Lecce citizens who will be able to experience its spaces and enjoy an architectural asset of immense value.

The project originates from the historical headquarters of the bank Banco di Napoli, a mighty building in the city centre of Lecce inaugurated in 1930. In 2009, entrepreneur Renè De Picciotto acquired the property and initiated a far-sighted renovation and reconversion process entrusted to architect Lucia Bianco and engineer Luciano Ostuni, which led to the birth of Palazzo BN, an elegant temple of hospitality and gastronomy.

On the ground floor there is an outstanding Food Court with an extensive gastronomic offer. Thirteen flats are built on the first and second floors; they are spacious, designed for those who do not want to give up all the comforts of a large hotel, even when on holiday for just a few days. Each living unit is enriched with high-quality, Made-in-Italy furnishing of renowned design. The roof has now become Terrazza BN, a panoramic roof garden open to the public.

Laminam-Palazzo BMThe project involves the use of Laminam’s I Naturali, Ossido and Calce, and IN-SIDE collections, chosen in eight finishes that are skilfully integrated into the floors, wall cladding or design furniture complements, in a perfect dialogue with existing materials, between revisitation and tradition.

The project aims to offer an immersive experience accompanied by the suggestions of antique elements, such as vaults, marble floors and walls, interior doors, grilles and chandeliers, all restructured into precious vintage touches that become an integral part of the furniture.

Laminam-Palazzo BMThe basement, where the bank’s vaults were once located, is now a Wellness Boutique dedicated to wellness. It is not just a gym, but an exclusive place for personal well-being. The floor of the men’s changing rooms features the Laminam Pietra Grey collection; for the women’s changing rooms and common area, Invisible White marble was used.

Laminam-Palazzo BMThe ceramic slabs are laid flush with the original security door connecting the men’s changing rooms to the common areas. Both finishes combine the refinement of traditional architectural stone with the technical performance of Laminam ceramic slab, applied in environments requiring special attention to hygiene and frequent cleaning. I Naturali collection emphasises natural elements with the advantage of a multifaceted, hygienic, durable and long-lasting surface.

Laminam-Palazzo BMThe bar counter located in the Food Court features the Ossido collection, chosen in the Bruno shade with Laminam 5+ thickness in the 1620mm x 3240mm large size: this material simulates the oxidation process of copper plates and captures the iridescent shades of metal subject to the passing of time.

Laminam-Palazzo BMLaminam’s I Naturali collection features in the different rooms of the flats: in the same residence the colours range from the pure white of Invisible White (used as walls and floors in the bathroom and in the kitchen half-floor), to the industrial modernism of the kitchen worktop and backsplash with slabs from the Calce Grigio series.

Laminam-Palazzo BMThis is complemented with the intense background of dark marble with the Noir Desir slab (applied to the floor in the living room and corridors) and the grey shades of Pietra Grey (chosen for the kitchen), in a continuous play of colours and contrasts with the wooden flooring and lighter-coloured design furniture elements. Noir Desir also dresses the floor and wall tiles in the bathroom, achieving the styled elegance that is a dominant feature of the building.

Laminam-Palazzo BMA third flat involves the use of the Pietra Grey surface, inspired by the calcite grey marble variety of the same name, applied in the kitchen as a worktop, half-floor and backsplash and in the bathroom as a wall cladding, proving the versatility of Laminam slabs. Arabescato ceramic slabs complete the interior design with the refinement of white marble, laid on the floor of the walkway joining the rooms.

Laminam-Palazzo BMEmperador Extra, with its Bocciardato finish and ivory veining, tells the story of the stone-inspired surfaces for the bathroom of one of the flats and the floor of the meeting room for customer use, while the Laminam Pietra Grey and Calce Grigio slabs enrich the kitchen, worktop, peninsula and living area with modernity.

Laminam-Palazzo BMThe private terrace of the presidential suite see the use of Pietra Piasentina Taupe in the 1620mm x 3240mm large size and Laminam 5+ thickness. The same surface also dresses the floor of the Rooftop garden at the top of the building; the choice fell on the Fiammata surface finish, with a Laminam 20+ thickness and laying as a floating floor, with special sizes obtained from the 1620mm x 3240mm maxi-slabs. I

Laminam-Palazzo BMnspired by the materiality of one of the most famous stones in the Italian architectural tradition, Pietra Piasentina entrusts its bold hue with the great aesthetic impact that characterises it; it is particularly suitable for interior decoration or outdoor surfaces.

Pizzeria San Lazzaro | Pizza Legend by Studio Svetti Architecture https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2022/11/13/pizzeria-san-lazzaro-pizza-legend-by-studio-svetti-architecture/ Sat, 12 Nov 2022 19:00:28 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=22186 ]]> The new Pizzeria San Lazzaro | Pizza Legend is the new project by Emanuele Svetti of Studio Svetti Architecture.

Architect Emanuele Svetti sought to create a new, unconventional environment, where the presence of surreal elements, that recall oneiric dimensions, can be experienced combined with a game of two-dimensional geometries: the black and white of the surfaces literally “quartered” by the unexpected inclusion of an iron giant that looks out, in an unprecedented perspective from the ceiling.

Pizzeria San Lazzaro by Emanuele Svetti“This is the first time in which I work in the design of a Pizzeria” said the architect “and this is a Neapolitan pizzeria designed on Mars”.

Pizzeria San Lazzaro by Emanuele SvettiEmanuele Svetti perfectly captures, in his sentence above, the irreverent irony for which he is known. His philosophy of design was based on finding a new format for the restaurant that was in keeping with Pizza Legend’s goal to de-emphasise the food and celebrate the taste of Italy’s status symbol. It was important to carefully consider the functionality of the commercial space which has a floor area of only 95sqm on a single level.

Pizzeria San Lazzaro by Emanuele SvettiThe architect worked closely with the pizza makers looking for the best possible optimisation to create a harmonious compromise between style and functionality.

The result is a captivating game of geometries with the grès used to create a geometric pattern capable of giving originality to the whole environment. The grès covers the floor and some walls creating a suggestive pattern effect, while a part of the restaurant room has been defined with a contrast line between black and white wall enamel.

Pizzeria San Lazzaro by Emanuele SvettiIn an unconventional choice, wallpaper was applied to the ceiling inspired by the ‘Project’ collection, designed for Zambaiti Parati. The studio reworked it specifically to make the application unique. As soon as the customer enters the restaurant, they are literally ‘welcomed’ by a robot that comes out to ‘greet’ the guest through a “gash” in the ceiling from which a part of the Cortona skyline can be glimpsed.

Pizzeria San Lazzaro by Emanuele SvettiThe counter covering is made from grès on a wooden structure that rests on the refrigerated metal elements, but here with a Venetian terrazzo effect that incorporates the contrast between white and black, emphasised by a skilful play of profiles of light that enhance the play of geometries.

The tables were made to design with a Pedrali base using grès tiles that act as a support surface. Seats are by Pedrali and the stools are positioned in front of the pizza making area.

San Lazzaro is a cosy, compact, original place and certainly far from the stereotype of the pizzeria, interpreted in the strong, playful and elegant style that characterises so many of the architect Emanuele Svetti’s projects.

lamatilde EDIT Milano https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2022/07/06/lamatilde-edit-milano/ Wed, 06 Jul 2022 01:00:07 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=21555 ]]> lamatilde continues its collaboration with EDIT by designing the new EDIT Milano space on Via Bernina, in the context of the former Scalo Farini industrial area, a historical Milanese railway hub.

EDIT, which stands for EAT DRINK INNOVATE TOGETHER, is an original format in the food and beverage field. Conceived by Marco Brignone in collaboration with lamatilde and business accelerator The Doers, it represents a unique example in the world as it blends American culinary incubators with innovative Italian cuisine and the experimental potential of craft breweries.

After EDIT Torino – with its 2,400 square meters at the heart of the historical, post-industrial district of Barriera di Milano in Turin – EDIT Milano follows the format as an Italian Pub with a brewery and production plant.

In line with the studio’s design approach and with EDIT’s language, the architectural structure maintains the location’s industrial heritage. Rough concrete surfaces created with traditional wooden slat formwork, exposed systems and a bold use of metal pay homage to brutalist style and the post-industrial aesthetic.

The beating heart of the venue, and central element in the project, is the concrete island counter with pewter top, which takes off from the one designed for the first EDIT in Turin, thus giving the interiors a coherent identity. The concrete finishing with strong grill texture complements the contoured, completely handmade top, bringing to life an element with true star power. Most of the client experience indeed develops around this counter: one side is dedicated to beer tapping and serving, while the other functions as a coffee and cocktail bar.

The perimeter of the venue stands out for its mix of concrete-like walls and milled Viroc paneling, which echoes the counter’s grill texture creating material and visual continuity. A concrete finish was chosen for the floors, in line with the other locations designed for EDIT.

The space is completed and further enhanced by two open rooms dedicated to brewing and processing EDIT craft beers.

The lighting revolves around Arco lamps and Splugen Brau pendant lamps, both designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos.

The Splugen Brau was not chosen only for its looks: it was designed in the 1960s for the Milanese brewery of the same name. Thus, selecting this model for EDIT Milano creates a connection and correspondence with the city’s history and design culture.

lamatilde sourced the rest of the furniture from design companies – the Fifties chair by Calligaris, the sofas and armchairs by Walter Knoll – but also custom designed the coffee tables, stools and storage elements.

Preserving the past by designing the future: Palazzo Nani, previously house of the aristocratic Nani family, then a school, reopened its doors to the city, after the major renovation work curated by Studio Marco Piva, carried out under the supervision, and in agreement, with the Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for the Municipality of Venice, as the property is subject to the protection regime for its historical value.

Palazzo-Nani

The new Hotel Palazzo Nani evolves the concept of luxury, giving it a cultural and refined value, combining the artistic heritage with a profound aesthetic research in which the best design integrates with the emotional and social value of the work, increasing its prestige even more.

Palazzo-NaniA change of intended use that keep intact the historical and artistic value of the Palace, preserving and emphasising the original structures and floors, as well as all the frescoes, magnified with the use of light.

Palazzo-NaniThe emotional element of the project is the lifeblood of the place: everything has been studied and designed with the intention of finding a reference to the city of Venice. The work of Studio Marco Piva was therefore based on the dialogue between the existing on the one hand, and with the history of the place on the other, in a combination of past and future.

Palazzo-Nani

“With the Palazzo Nani project we aimed to create a “special place” in Venice that offers the best of hospitality in an attractive and osmotic context.

A new concept of luxury that harmoniously combines history, art and design to offer guests and visitors the most refined welcoming, in continuity with the best Venetian tradition.

Palazzo Nani, thanks to the meticulous restoration of its monumental parts, its friezes and its stunning frescoes, has been brought back to life and will continue to pass on its intrinsic beauty also through a non-invasive but elegant and light interior design.

A design that is careful about formal and material choices, colours and textures that aims to configure a new sophisticated setting, a contribution to the magnificence of the city”. – Marco Piva

Ideal Park disappearing car lift https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2022/02/28/ideal-park-disappearing-car-lift/ Sun, 27 Feb 2022 19:00:29 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=20744 ]]> The clever disappearing car lift from Ideal Park has been installed in a wonderful modern villa along the Cascais coast, on the west side of Lisboa and inside the Sintra Natural Park: the Casa da Quinta da Marinha.

The area, famous for its grand estates, palaces and luxury villas which gained Sintra a UNESCO World Heritage designation, is one of the most expensive and exclusive real estate markets and is similarly known for its high standards of living, consistently ranking as one of the best places to live in Portugal.

IdealParkThe villa, designed by Enter Arquitectura, was based on a logic of well-defined vertical planes that structure and organise the house’s interior spaces and which in turn release the two horizontal levels that extend to create a game of interior and exterior spaces.

IdealParkThe materials and colours used were chosen to achieve perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. Similarly, the access to the underground garage was designed with the aim of minimising the visual impact, so the architects chose to install a disappearing car lift IP1-CM MOB by IdealPark. The car lift becomes an alternative solution to the ramp, combining functionality and aesthetics while preserving and dedicating all the outdoor space to gardens or courtyards.

IdealParkThe lid of the lift is covered with the same material as the surrounding area, thus contributing to a completely invisible result. It is also driveable and can be used as an additional parking area.

The installation of a video surveillance system and a virtual protection perimeter with photocells has made it possible to leave the space around the car lift free from unsightly fences.

IdealParkThanks to the IdealPark car lift, the owner of the villa can park their classic car safely and comfortably in the underground garage.

Hotel Montchalet featuring Antolini natural stones https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2022/01/25/hotel-montchalet-featuring-antolini-natural-stones/ Mon, 24 Jan 2022 19:00:19 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=20603 ]]> Patagonia and Sequoia Brown are the Antolini natural stones utilised in the refined interior design of the 5-star Hotel Montchalet in Ortisei, facing the majestic Dolomites in a unique, inimitable natural setting.

Immersed in the splendid mountain landscape of Alto Adige, the Montchalet resort combines exclusive quality, elegance and comfort. Like a refined residence, Montchalet offers guests luxurious suites with an intimate atmosphere, meeting the highest standards of service, hospitality, dining and wellness.

Antolini-Montchalet

Owner of the hotel, Marco Pezzutto says “Montchalet was founded in 2017 thanks to the passion for hospitality which I share with my family. We immediately decided to focus on the requirements of the most demanding and selective guests, who could not find a location in Val Gardena to match the magnificence of the Ortisei landscape, and the exceptional opportunities provided by the local context.”

Montchalet engages guests in a refined, immersive experience, making every moment of their stay unforgettable thanks to facilities that foster an overall sense of harmony while cultivating wellbeing.

“Interior design is one fundamental aspect of Montchalet,” Pezzuto continues, “The project has been interpreted along a single guideline, that of the balance between tradition and contemporary character. The materials, colours, furnishings and finishes have been selected with extreme care, emphasising the drive for excellence that has always been one of our main values. The choice of enhancing various areas of the resort with unique, exclusive natural stones moves precisely in this direction. To discover the marvellous world of these materials, we have decided in particular to rely on the expertise and experience of Antolini, a company that is a leader in the sector on a worldwide scale. They have guided us in an exciting search for the most remarkable solutions, capable of conveying the sensations we wanted to offer to our guests.”

“The spaces set aside for wellness through water, such as the pool in the spa and the bathrooms inside the suites, feature the presence of natural stone surfaces of astonishing beauty – capable of igniting the senses of sight and touch, connecting every guest with his or her own inner centre and the surrounding natural world.”

“In the wellness area, the Antolini facing in Patagonia transforms the wall of the swimming pool into a fantastic natural tableau. Pale zones with subtle shading stand out on a backdrop that is at times translucent, veiled by the mutable nuances of earth tones, alternating with complex black and golden ramifications.”

The precious temporal pattern of the material, rendered even more striking with its backlighting, is reflected on the water’s surface, giving rise to an iridescent game of reflections, set on the stage of the large glass that separates the pool from the hotel patio, outwardly projecting the dreamy atmosphere of this space devoted to the wellness of both the body – and the spirit.

Sequoia Brown is the Antolini stone that becomes the absolute protagonist of the bathrooms inside the suites. An apt choice, in line with the architectural language of the resort, a contemporary reinterpretation of the style of alpine construction. The discreet, welcoming image of the private spaces, generated by extensive use of wood, takes on value and tactile allure due to the presence of a stone of vibrant elegance, displaying its soft grain that links back to the idea of antique wooden surfaces.

“In this case, the exceptional appeal of the flooring comes from Antolini’s Sequoia Brown, applied in a very special version” Marco Pezzutto explains, “The marble has the typical geometric effects of parquet, conveying the impression of splendid boards placed horizontally and vertically. While providing extraordinary strength and durability, the floor conveys a sense of warmth usually associated with wood, as well as a dynamism skillfully amplified by the glass surfaces of the shower cabin, which reflect the marvellous patterns of the natural stone. On the wall, marble rises to the height of the mirror and then even further up, once again triggering a game of reflections and overlaps that accompanies guests throughout their experiences in contact with water”.

Antolini-MontchaletPatagonia by Antolini has been utilised in the wellness area at Montchalet while Sequoia Brown was chosen for the cladding of the walls of the bathrooms inside the suites. Sequoia Brown from the Woodstone Collection was chosen for the flooring in the suites, offering the solidity of marble in an intriguing, unusual arrangement of slats.

Guest post: Understanding Stainless Steel Grades & How To Use Them https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2021/09/13/guest-post-understanding-stainless-steel-grades-how-to-use-them/ Sun, 12 Sep 2021 20:00:09 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=19841 ]]> Today’s Guest Post comes from Steel Builders who are going to walk us through the various grades of stainless steel and help us understand how they can be best applied.

Starting a project with the wrong materials is a project that is doomed to fail. Selecting suitable materials is almost as important as picking the right tools, so it pays dividends to understand the differences, especially regarding the wide variety of stainless steel grades and families. With differences in versatility, durability, and affordability, understanding stainless steel alloys and how to use them correctly is a lot like rocket science – you need an expert like Steel Builders.

These highly experienced structural steel fabricators offer a wide range of stainless steel products like grates, drains, and stormwater accessories. If there’s anyone that can help you get the most out of this incredible array of alloy metals, it’s Steel Builders. Follow along as the stainless steel experts break down each grade and family, including the combinations of various metals found in each.

stainless steel grades

Stainless Steel Families

Stainless steel is categorised into four family types based on the ratio of various metals used in alloy production. The four families of stainless steel are Austenitic, Ferritic, Duplex and Martensitic & Precipitation Hardening.

 1. Austenitic Stainless Steel is easy to work and weld, offering toughness and corrosion resistance. It’s also non-magnetic (unless cold worked), giving it excellent ductility.
 2. Ferritic Stainless Steel offers improved corrosion resistance but is rarely used in structural steel applications due to its lower strength and magnetic properties.
 3. Duplex Stainless Steel is equal parts austenite and ferrite, making it twice as strong and even more corrosion resistant. All duplex grades are magnetic.
 4. Martensitic & Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel contains a high carbon content which enables heat-treatment for high mechanical strength and hardness. This kind of stainless steel is Magnetic in all conditions.

Grading Stainless Steel

Around the world, several international entities help describe specific properties of the alloy, such as toughness, magnetism, corrosion resistance, and alloy composition of particular stainless steel. Much like the nutritional information provided on the side of food packaging, these entities tell you the chemical composition of that stainless steel type.

For example, 304 UNS S30400 Austenitic Stainless Steel under Australian standards, the Indicative Chemical Composition of S30400 Steels:

 • 18% to 20% Chromium
 • 8% to 10.5% Nickel
 • 0.08% Carbon
 • 2% Manganese
 • 0.75% Silicon
 • 0.045% Phosphorus
 • 0.03% Sulfur
 • 0.1% Nitrogen

About 30 stainless steel grades are commonly available in Australia, each with a different set of applications and uses. The two most popular stainless steel grades are 304 and 316.

stainless steel grades

304 Stainless Steel

The most common form of stainless steel is 304, thanks to its value for money, excellent corrosion resistance, and sanitisation ability. Popular in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries, Steel Builders use 304 stainless steel for internal shower drains, grates, and stormwater orifice plates.

316 Stainless Steel

Second, on the most popular list is 316 stainless steel. Maintaining practically all the same physical and mechanical properties as 304, what sets this alloy apart is roughly 3% molybdenum for increased corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and other industrial solvents. For these reasons, Steel Builders use 316 stainless steel for external drain strainers and grates.

If you’re looking for experts in structural steel fabrications for domestic or commercial applications, then get in touch with Steel Builders today to discuss your next project.
