We were treated to an amazing dinner by the seaside in Numana on the evening before our visit then we were up early the next day, ready to spend some time immersed in the world of Elica. Elica is distributed in Australia through Residentia Group.

Through its partnership with Residentia Group, Elica is set to make inroads into the Australian market in 2024/25.

Elica-AIDTHaving won multiple awards for its product designs, Elica has now launched a new innovative product into the market (as displayed at this year’s EuroCucina). LHOV is a three-in-one appliance that combines an hob, oven and ventilation in one functional and beautifully-designed appliance.

Elica-AIDTOur day with Elica began with a corporate briefing where many of our group marvelled at the company’s domination of the market in other countries. We were interested to learn that Elica employs more than 2,500 people across 7 production sites around the world. The company holds more than 900 patents, with 300 focussed on cutting-edge technology and 600 on new design solutions. In terms of market share, Elica is a powerhouse with a 51.8% share of the Italian market and an 11.2% share of the European market. It has won a host of prestigious design awards for its innovative and beautiful products.

Elica-AIDTThen, we split into two groups with Group 1 visiting the Research & Development facility and Group 2 spending time in the showroom with Elica’s Chief Design Officer, Fabrizio Crisà. After a short coffee break, the groups swapped.

Hearing from Fabrizio personally about his passion for design, love of functionality and dedication to maximising both was a wonderful experience and he openly shared with both groups his process of design and some of the inspiration he used to kick-start a number of his most well-known products.

Elica-AIDTFollowing a delicious lunch, we stopped into Elica’s assembly factory and broke into smaller groups to tour this facility. It was a great opportunity to see behind the scenes and gain a further understanding of the dedication of the company to excellence across all aspects of its business.

Salone-del-Mobile-Milano-2024Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, said: “The 62nd edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano exceeded all expectations: it was a record edition. We saw exceptional results, thanks to the confidence of an ecosystem that, yet again, recognised the international leadership of the event.

During the process of redesigning the format and the experiences, we kept both industrial and manufacturing and the visitors as our focus, in a bid to stimulate both sides with a stunning Cultural Programme capable of creating new connections between the powerful roots of the design culture and the definition of new future visions.

The success of this edition is also due to the success of the Kitchen and Bathroom Biennials, in which research and development are the synthesis not only of innovation processes but are also an expression of the ability of both sectors to intercept the habits and desires of daily living”.

A day in Brera with The Mentors of Design https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/05/07/a-day-in-brera-with-the-mentors-of-design/ Mon, 06 May 2024 20:00:20 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26592 ]]> Last month, as part of AIDT’s tour to Salone del Mobile.Milano, we spent a very enjoyable morning with a guided tour through the Brera Design District with our good friends Michele and Leonardo from The Mentors of Design.

We met at the Valcucine showroom and spent an enjoyable half-hour with some hands-on time to discover the kitchen displays. A representative from Valcucine gave us a welcome talk and introduced us to a number of the displays. For Milan Design Week, the Valcucine showroom was transformed into a stage where the kitchen collections were presented in a new light. The event, entitled “Architectural Scenarios” celebrated the integration of kitchens with architecture thanks to the participation of renowned architecture and interior design studios such as i29, ARRCC, and Neri&Hu.

“Architectural Scenarios” was selected as one of the top 10 projects shortlisted for a Special Communication Mention at the Fuorisalone Award 2024.

Next, we visited the Agape showroom for its “The shapes of Matter” installation. We delved into the function of beauty and the beauty of functionality with contributions from Patricia Urquiola, Benedini Associati and Alessandro Andreucci, as well as introducing a new collaboration with Vismaravetro.

From Agape, we took a short walk to the Memphis apartment, the original home of Ettore Sottsass in the 1980s where he would regularly hold talks with colleagues, designers and architects about new forms of expression. The Galleria today is a treasure trove of unique pieces that balance a flamboyant mix of pop culture and ironic classicism to create a disruptive aesthetic that sits somewhere between kitsch and elegance.

Just across the road, we encountered the Marsotto gallery and showroom – an exquisite space dedicated to marble, showcasing skilled craftsmanship and design culture to create pieces that are truly extraordinary. Marsotto works with top international designers to create collections of iconic products which also have an everyday-use application, with a modern aesthetic that underscores the luxury and beauty of this natural product.

Our last stop was the showroom of Rossignoli, a bicycle design and manufacturer in the heart of Milan whose premises became an installation for Swiss company USM Haller. USM’s modular furniture was installed within the showroom to highlight the countless possibilities of the spheres, tubes, connectors and colourful panels. An interactive exhibition invites visitors to explore the many facets of the design classic’s rich history.

The Mentors of Design is a consultancy service which provides a range of services to homeowners, businesses and other designers worldwide. One of the most important is Shopping Assistance as it is a service that can be provided remotely.

Michele and Leonardo have lived and worked in Milan for many years and know the city intimately. They thrive on making new relationships with designers in other countries and enjoy learning about new cultures and visions. Their Shopping Assistance consultancy was developed, above all, to allow them to search for pieces for unique design opportunities that enhance domestic spaces and beyond.

Our AIDT tour group was incredibly lucky to have Michele and Leo to walk with us through Brera and show us some of their favourite spaces. We look forward to doing it again next year!

A day with Gollinucci https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/04/29/a-day-with-gollinucci/ Sun, 28 Apr 2024 20:00:51 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26524 ]]> Our AIDT attendees spent a day with Gollinucci, courtesy Lincoln Sentry, at the factory and showroom located in beautiful Cesena.

Gollinucci products are distributed in Australia through Lincoln Sentry and the company is known for its innovative, quality products for internal organisation, storage and bin systems. It produces a wide range of highly functional objects that feature top-class design. Gollinucci is known for its “people first” principles and its support of environmental sustainability, and all its products are proudly made in Italy.

Gollinucci-AIDTGollinucci has a long association with a variety of Italian designers to ensure beauty and functionality combine seamlessly across its product range. It has cooperated with designers such as Lucci Orlandini Design, Paolo Nava and Fabio Casiraghi, young designers from ISIA Faenza, Benzima Design Studio, and Andrea Federici.

We started the day by dividing into three groups – Group 1 went with Gollinucci CEO Giacomo Gollinucci for a tour of the factory; Group 2 enjoyed a presentation on the company with Sara Ronconi from Customer Service; Group 3 spent time exploring the showroom with Roberto Gradari, Sales & Marketing Manager.

Then each group rotated through the three activities until all were complete and we enjoyed a coffee and morning treats before boarding the bus to our lunch destination.

Gollinucci-AIDTWe were treated to an amazing seafood lunch at the stunning La Spiaggia bar and restaurant which is located right on the Adriatic Sea and enjoys a beachfront location that provides seaside views from every vantage point.

Very well fed and watered, our group re-boarded our bus for our travel to the next location! Thank you to the team at Gollinucci who organised the day so seamlessly and to our very good friends at Lincoln Sentry for facilitating our visit.

Gollinucci-AIDTWe were very lucky to have the winners of the Lincoln Sentry “Legends of Lincoln” competition travel with us on tour – Logan and June from CK Joinery & Kitchens, and Andrew & Suzanne Pinto from GGS Glass. Congratulations to all and we hope you enjoyed your prize!

A day with Pedini https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/04/25/a-day-with-pedini/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 20:00:19 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=26482 ]]> Our AIDT group was fortunate to spend the day with tour sponsor Pedini at its facilities in the very pretty coastal city of Lucrezia.

Pedini has a proud history of Italian design and craftsmanship having been established in 1957 in Lucrezia which is in the province of Pesaro in Italy. Originally the company was an artisanal business specialising in kitchen furniture but today its product offerings extend to the kitchen, bathroom, wardrobes and living spaces.

Pedini AustraliaPedini is a powerhouse that exemplifies the “Made in Italy” commitment which is underscored by its many certifications for manufacturing methods and material/component selection. It has a global presence in more than 60 countries worldwide and is renowned for its environmental consciousness and collaboration with world-renowned designers.

Pedini-AIDTOur day started with a presentation from Pedini’s Export Sales Manager, Simone Gennari followed by coffee (a must, of course!). Then our group had time to explore the extensive Pedini showroom which spans over two levels at the company’s headquarters.

Following this we were taken on a tour of the factory premises which gave our manufacturer guests time to marvel at the organisation and capabilities of the factory and our designer guests a chance to experience the “behind the scenes” of how the products are brought to life.

We were taken back to the showroom for more exploration time over the 2nd level followed by a group photo and then we hopped onto our bus to go to lunch. Lunch was a delicious affair at a local restaurant in a private room where we dined on two different types of pasta, a selection of grilled meats and salad. Entirely sated, we boarded the bus for the trip back to our hotel.

It was evident from all that we witnessed the passion and commitment of the Pedini family to upholding its reputation for quality and innovative design. We are very appreciative of the time all the staff took out of their day to make us feel welcome and host us at their premises.

The 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/23/the-62nd-edition-of-salone-del-mobile-milano/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 19:00:37 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25842 ]]> The 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano will take place at Rho Fiera Milano from 16th to 21st April with a bold, new approach to industry trade fairs.

Evolution and innovation are the key words for the next edition of the trade show which has designed an open ecosystem that seeks to optimise the layout and visitor paths within the showground, thanks to the contribution of neuroscience and the organiser’s adoption of a “human-at-the-centre” philosophy.

This year the organisers have undertaken a total redistribution of the pavilions with a view to grouping the exhibitors by content and visitor targets so as to amplify the value and meaning of the visitor experience. The 2024 event will bring together more than 1900 exhibitors, including 600 young designers under 35 years and 22 design schools. The internal exhibitions include Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Workplace3.0, S.Project, EuroCucina with FTK (appliances), the International Bathroom Exhibition and saloneSatellite.

Within the single-storey layout, a number of aesthetic paths are planned with access to experiential spaces and rest/relaxation zones including a circular bookshop and arena, and a new design library.

Salone-del-Mobile-MilanoIn the EuroCucina/FTK and International Bathroom Exhibition pavilions, visitors will enjoy a new exhibition layout – reworked by Lombardini22, a leading group on the Italian architectural and engineering scene. The studio has harnessed neuroscience to improve the visitor experience, analysing paths as well as the location and distribution of exhibition stands and rest areas. Following extensive virtual testing, a loop-shaped circuit was chosen to create a more intuitive, simpler-to-navigate system – widened pathways will improve navigation, while cultural installations and quiet areas help visitors take a moment when needed. The organisers claim it will now take only a 640 metre walk to visit all the stands (unlike 1.2kms in previous years).

Salone-del-Mobile-Milano
SaloneSatellite 2023 (Photo Ludovica Mangini)

SaloneSatellite, celebrating 25 years in 2024, has moved to pavilions 5-7 with the theme of “Connecting Design Since 1998”. To celebrate this wonderful milestone, there is also an exhibition at the Triennale (16-28 April) that showcases the history of the exhibition.

Salone-del-Mobile-MilanoThree significant installations are planned. “Interiors by David Lynch. A Thinking Room” will be installed in pavilions 5-7. Two identical and mirrored “thinking rooms” are conceived as symbolic doors that must be entered in order to immerse oneself in the event.

Salone-del-Mobile-MilanoThe second installation “Under The Surface” is designed and produced by Accurat, Design Group Italia and Emiliano Ponzi for the International Bathroom Exhibition and will be displayed in pavilion 10. This installation engages visitors in an immersive sense and pushes them to reflect on the subject of water sustainability.

The third installation will sit right in the centre of EuroCucina as a large, fluid stage that will host six independent and international food magazines to present an original vision of the present and future of the ingredients nature has to offer. “All You Have Ever Wanted To Know About Food Design in Six Performances” is the title of this installation involving six projects that unfold on a day-by-day basis. The magazines involved are Family Style (USA), L’Integrale (Italy), Linseed Journal (UK), Magazine F (South Korea), The Preserve Journal (Austria) and Farta (Portugal).

Morning Talks and Round Tables will be held at 11am each day in the Drafting Futures Arena, designed by Formafantasma who has reused the seatings from previous shows.

For those attending the show – ticket sales are now open!

Guide to Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2024/02/16/guide-to-salone-del-mobile-milano-2024/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 19:00:07 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=25786 ]]> The 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano will be held from 16-21 April and will feature the special exhibitions EuroCucina, FTK (appliances) and Salone Bagno (bathrooms).

This year the organisers have chosen to re-think the layout strategy and rearrange the pavilions in what they describe as ensuring “the most efficient times and ways for visiting as well as optimising the routes through the spaces to enrich the experience and ensure maximum visibility and accessibility of all exhibitors”.

EuroCucina and FTK – Technology for the Kitchen

Salone del Mobile.MilanoThis biennial exhibition is the industry’s guiding hand when it comes to trends in design, materials and application. Leading international kitchen manufacturers and design houses come to Milan to showcase the latest ideas for the kitchen space. The overwhelming focus is on sustainable material selection, highly technical solutions and creative design solutions for this space with it sown specific demands. FTK will showcase the latest in smart elements and home automation in the section devoted to domestic appliances and high tech applications. This year you will find EuroCucina and FTK in pavilions 2 and 4.

Salone Bagno

Salone del Mobile.MilanoAlso known as the International Bathroom Exhibition, this year Salone Bagno will be based in pavilions 6 and 10 (the pic above was taken in 2022 when the exhibition was in pavilions 22 and 24). The focus of the exhibition is trends and ideas in the name of relaxation and wellbeing, where new functionality meets technology with the overall goal to improve the quality of life of the users. Sustainability discussions are at the forefront of the exhibition, with an emphasis on innovative solutions. Form and function are still important, shining a light on options for water saving to reduct consumption and ways to lower environmental impact without sacrificing efficiency or aesthetics.

Salone del Mobile.Milano/International Furniture Exhibition

Salone del Mobile MilanoPavilions 14 and 18

These pavilions will focus on the best of the best in Italian design with leading names on one side and emerging designers on the other. A number of topics will be covered in these spaces – from hospitality to design and innovation in the office space. The centrepiece of this area will be the arena designed by Formafantasma – the design duo Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin. Given over to attendees, the arena is a multifunctional space for meeting, gathering, talking and networking or resting/taking a break during visits to the show.

Pavilions 22 and 24 & 9 and 11

These pavilions will showcase new projects in collaboration with some of the finest designers in the world who will explore the relationship between design and technology as well as the ties between form and functionality with a focus on contemporary design. These halls will contain the “furniture” portion of the fair with a wide variety of items within the broad spectrum of the definition.

Pavilions 13 and 15

These pavilions also showcase “furniture” in all its forms with a focus on a classic style for a modern world. The common thread of the exhibitors in these halls is the care paid to material choices and the attention to detail in the creation of objects that combine design and high craftsmanship.

Pavilions 5 and 7

SaloneSatellite marks its 25th anniversary this year and is known for its celebration of young and emerging designers. 600 talented young designers and 22 design schools are invited to participate and this year’s theme is “Connecting Design Since 1998”.

Located in the region of Umbria in central Italy, the city is located in between the Nera river and the Serra stream. It was founded as an ancient Roman town but settlements in the Terni area predate this time. It is also known as the “City of Lovers” as its patron saint – St Valentine – was born here and their remains are preserved in its basilica/sanctuary. Terni is today an industrial town, with steel mills widely introduced during the 19th century which led to its nickname “The Steel City”. Join us and your local guides as we take a walk through this architecturally significant city for the last day of our tour.

Sat 27th April

Breakfast at your leisure at the hotel in Terni then check out and continue your travels as it suits you. Let’s talk about Salone del Mobile.Milano https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2023/09/06/lets-talk-about-salone-del-mobile-milano/ Tue, 05 Sep 2023 20:00:11 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=24264 ]]> By now, most of you would have heard about Salone del Mobile.Milano, the world’s most highly-regarded design show, held in the magical city of Milan.

Salone del Mobile.Milano is held every year with sub-sections held either annually or biennially. The main furniture exhibition and furnishing accessories exhibition is held every year, as are SaloneSatellite and S.Project, but there are a range of internal exhibitions which are held biennially.

So, let’s look at what’s going to be at the show in April 2024.

Eurocucina (and FTK)

Salone del Mobile.MilanoEurocucina was launched in 1974 and is the leading showcase for high-end kitchens from around the world. The 2024 show represents the 23rd edition of the exhibition with FTK (Technology for the Kitchen – in other words, appliances) running as a collateral event.

Within the halls, more than 82 companies within 16,000m² will showcase contemporary design, technological innovation, next generation performance, energy efficiency and ease of use. The designs represent society’s changing emphasis on the kitchen as a domestic hub, far from the simply-functional spaces of the past, and focus on these rooms as places for conviviality and socialising.

FTK features more than 39 exhibitors across 10,500m² of exhibition space all displaying an overview of the latest technologies for the built-in domestic appliance market with models, prototypes and concepts to inspire and delight.

Salone Bagno

Salone del Mobile.MilanoAKA The International Bathroom Exhibition, Salone Bagno was launched in 2003 as a sub-section of the larger show but became an exhibition in its own right in 2006. This reflects the revolution of the bathroom and the increased focus on this room as a dedicated sanctuary for relaxation and wellness.

More than 172 exhibitors will fill an area of 17,000m² showcasing an array of top-quality good catering for not only high-performance products, but also with a major focus on sustainability, efficiency and energy saving.

SaloneSatellite

This major international design event is one of the only exhibition dedicated to designers under 35 years. Established by the renowned Marva Griffin in 1998, SaloneSatellite is geared to facilitating interaction between businesses and young designers who are entering the industry.

The 2024 event will mark the 25th edition of the exhibition and there are a range of special events planned to mark the occasion. This section of the show is one of the most popular and it’s the best place to immerse yourself in the up-and-coming designers who will be the next generation of design professionals.

S.Project

Salone del Mobile.MilanoS.Project is a curated exhibition which is a multidimensional space with a multisectoral focus combining a heterogeneous selection of goods and products from interior to outdoor furnishing, wellness products to fabrics, lighting to acoustic solutions, coverings to finishes. The displays showcase manufacturing excellence, new concepts and innovative solutions across a wide array of sectors and industries.

Salone Internazionale del Mobile

Salone del Mobile.MilanoThe world of design and planning celebrates innovation and value for the entire design community. The hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of products on show are confirmation of the importance of the furniture exhibition as an international platform for trade and an unmissable forum for industry professionals.

The International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition was launched in 1989 in response to the growing demand for decorative goods and has become the sector’s leading event, showcasing a varied and comprehensive selection of home furnishing systems, decorative objects, furnishing accessories and textiles for the home.

AIDT 2024 Tour

The show is traditionally broken down into component parts, each focussing on a different area of speciality spread over 20 halls. Salone Internazionale del Mobile includes Salone del Complemento (International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition), Workplace 3.0 (International Workspace Exhibition), S. Project, EuroCucina (International Kitchen Furniture Exhibition), FTK (Technology for the Kitchen), Salone Internazionale del Bagno (International Bathroom Exhibition), SaloneSatellite (for designers under 35 years) and Design With Nature (curated by Mario Cucinella).

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is split into three style categories: Classic, which draws on the values of tradition, craftsmanship and skill in the art of making furniture and objects in the classic style; Design, products that speak of functionality, innovation and boast a great sense of style and xLux, the section devoted to timeless luxury re-read in a contemporary key.

International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition

Launched in 1989, in response to the growing demand for decorative goods, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition has become the sector’s leading event, showcasing an increasingly varied and comprehensive selection of excellent pieces year by year, encompassing the entire home furnishing system, ranging from decorative objects, furnishing accessories and textiles for the home.

Workplace 3.0

Salone del Mobile Milano

Workplace3.0 is an innovative exhibition area devoted to design and technology in workspace planning. It explores brand-new approaches, forms and solutions to the workplace “of the future”, in which the human factor and smart technologies both have a vital role to play.

The world of work is changing rapidly, along with the actual concept of work: new methods call for different workspaces. Workplace3.0, devoted to design and technology, is the best-equipped event to respond to this shift and to market demand. It showcases the finest products designed for procurement plans, reception areas and office spaces of the best companies working on solutions that dovetail with the new ways of working and the new design requisites for “inhabiting” the workspace.

S.Project

S.Project is a crosscutting space devoted to design products and decorative and technical interior design solutions. S.Project offers a 360-degree perspective on interior architecture and responds to the latest market demands. Its distinctive feature is its multi-sectoral focus – a multidimensional space with a heterogeneous selection of goods, with products ranging from interior to outdoor furnishing, from wellness products to fabrics, from lighting to acoustic solutions, from coverings to finishes.

SaloneSatellite

Salone del Mobile Milano

The international event in the design world dedicated to the under-35s, SaloneSatellite’s mission is to bolster the ties between research, design and industry. Open to designers under 35, it aims to facilitate the relationship between businesses and young designers preparing to enter the profession and the market, post-study. SaloneSatellite also presents work by universities and schools specialising in design. This involvement is geared to staying up to date with the ways in which the educational system is changing around design, what priorities are indicated to the students and the research processes, how the students’ intellectual and practical abilities are being stimulated and therefore their understanding of the problems and consequences of certain production methods.

Eurocucina

Ernestomeda presents Inside System
Ernestomeda “Inside System” – EuroCucina 2018

Now in its 23rd edition, EuroCucina, the benchmark exhibition at international level, will bring together 82 exhibitors, each of them showcasing a wide range of top-quality goods. They will be spread over an area equal to 16,000 m2, largely in Pavilions 9 and 11. Furniture companies exhibiting total living concepts will be presenting their kitchen designs on their respective stands.

In this edition of EuroCucina, the domestic hearth will be seen as a multifunctional space, an expression of contemporary living, its confines with the other domestic spaces becoming so blurred as to be non-existent. As a natural evolution and consequence of these last few pandemic-hit years, kitchens have become fluid, hybrid, integrated spaces, the absolute focus of the modern home, social aggregators, not just purveyors of essential needs.

FTK

NikolaTesla Switch
Elica – NikolaTesla Switch – FTK 2018

FTK’s focus is on the ever-growing number of sustainable domestic appliances and, because these appliances are very intelligent, they are tasked with minimising the impact of everyday domestic activities on the environment and helping to improve lifestyles and health. In this edition of FTK, technology explores how it can be increasingly responsible and resilient, human-friendly, intuitive, accessible and easily integrated and integrable into our lives. The aesthetic component of the products on show will be no less important – ergonomics, materials, colours and good looks will be the crucial building blocks of the proposed solutions, increasingly geared to personalised and customisable design that will ensure consumers are provided with electrical appliances that respond to every possible requisite in terms of taste and style.

Salone Bagno

BetteLux Oval Couture
BetteLux Oval Couture in Carbon – Salone Bagno 2018

Launched in 2003 as a subsection of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Bathroom Exhibition became an exhibition in its own right in 2006, reflecting the evolution of the domestic bathroom – formerly a strictly functional space – into a dedicated sanctuary for relaxation and wellness.

The new products on show this year reflect the continued evolution of this particular space, which is becoming increasingly technological and green-oriented without skimping on emotion. Bathroom furniture companies have been investing in research and innovation for years in order to come up with low energy products in line with the most recent market demands for sustainability. This has caused them to focus on water saving and on using low impact, recyclable and circular materials that also guarantee high quality and durable products. What is quite clear, these days, is that the sector is aware of how to respect the world we live in, with quality certifications, ecological materials, water-based wood finishings, recycled production waste, non-toxic and strong materials to stave off the end of life of products.

Salone del Mobile Milano will be held from 7th – 12th June in Milan at the Rho Fiera showgrounds with complementary activities in Milan’s eight Design Districts and installations throughout the city.

Häcker versatile kitchen – EuroCucina preview https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2022/06/01/hacker-versatile-kitchen-eurocucina-preview/ Tue, 31 May 2022 20:00:07 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=21372 ]]> Häcker Küchen will be exhibiting at EuroCucina with a focus on the highlights of two new product lines – systemat and concept130.

concept130 is a system kitchen based on the three pillars “Intelligent Variety”, “Technology & Design” and “Sustainability”. Häcker is focussed on holistic colour concepts for the fronts, carcase and mouldings with a choice of eleven exterior carcase colours and a uniform interior carcase in crystal white.

HackerNow offered in new selection colours of Eucalyptus, Umbra-natur, Ocean and Burgundy, systemat is visually impressive and designed to work well in a range of interior living environments thanks to a low grey content in the colour. The Metro inner pull-out system is not only high-quality but highly aesthetic thanks to its platinum hue which provides a previous metal appearance.

HackerA special feature of both the systemat and concept130 kitchens is sustainability. Häcker uses water-based lacquers, formaldehyde-reduced wood materials (from PURemission) and, in the new Roma and Ravenna front ranges, a lacquer laminate with a high recycled content. In addition, all Häcker kitchens are demonstrably produced in a climate-neutral manner and are certified to be healthy to live with.

With the systemat product line, Häcker will be showcasing a range of attractive and high-quality kitchens for a demanding clientele. Customers can choose between the three colours for the design carcase – crystal white, light grey, and lava grey, with the same colour applied to the inside and outside. Or, choose from the RAL colour system with its 190 colours.

With the three carcase heights of 71.5 cm, 78 cm and 84.5 cm, Häcker offers back-friendly ergonomics with a maximum degree of freedom of movement. The interior of the systemat kitchens consists of a noble titanium look and the SLD (Slim Line Drawer) pull-out system with underfloor runner and filigree 8 mm double-walled frame made of high-quality steel.

The new digital platform of the Salone del Mobile.Milano is online https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2021/07/07/the-new-digital-platform-of-the-salone-del-mobile-milano-is-online/ Tue, 06 Jul 2021 20:00:50 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=19475 ]]> The digital Salone del Mobile.Milano project has launched with a B2B experience devised to support the strategies of the exhibiting companies and equipped with an editorial section geared to broadening the authority and leadership of the event.

An agile, collaborative, integrated and cross-cutting tool, capable of bringing together all the different strands of our sector: in short, a highly innovative tool.

This was how the Salone del Mobile.Milano digital platform was described during the presentation talk show, moderated by Victoria Cabello, featuring Claudio Feltrin, President of FederlegnoArredo, Maria Porro, President of Assarredo, and Marco Sabetta, General Manager of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, who talked about its genesis and its vision.

On one hand, the platform will feature original editorial content, of both a B2B and B2C nature, constantly updated several times a day and split under thematic headings, with a cross-cutting focus on design, furnishing, art, architecture, science and technology; interviews with protagonists from these particular sectors and markets and leading visionary and interesting figures on the national and international cultural scene; collaborations with magazines and well-respected names from all over the world, generating a raft of different opinions and points of view. It will enable users to draw inspiration, find out what’s going on and interact all year round with a community destined to grow exponentially.

On the other, there will be company-focused content, allowing them to present themselves freely and independently through their most representative narratives – as well as images and videos – and, of course, through their products, both brand new and iconic. The value of the platform for them lies in its interactive nature: they will be able to avail themselves of breakout rooms, virtual showrooms and digital contact channels that will guarantee immediate and fruitful exchange with their targets before, during and after the fair. Achieving the common goal: digital at the service of the physical and vice versa.

This is also true of the third category of content, relating to the event and the services bound up with the trade fair experience: ticketing and information for organising visits and planning appointments for the week, and applications that will facilitate the demand and supply process of the furnishing products on offer.

Claudio Feltrin, President of FederlegnoArredo, had this to say: “As of today, it’s the Salone all year round.” Thanks to the digital platform, the most famous design fair in the world will stay ‘open’ 365 days a year. This is the main objective of a formula that has made the marriage of physical and digital its strong point, an educative model that will enable the companies to grow their own businesses, maintaining direct and constant contact with the clients”.

Marco Sabetta, General Manager of the Salone del Mobile.Milano, added: “The new digital platform marks a major step change for the Salone del Mobile.Milano and provides a sophisticated digital experience, the cornerstone of which is precisely the mix of physical and online. It’s a business tool for the companies and a virtual harvester of beauty, value and quality. A virtual space for sharing interpretations of the design and innovation world, allowing for a glimpse of the future of the sector and nurturing it with visions and possibilities”.

EuroCucina 2020 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2020/03/04/eurocucina-2020/ Tue, 03 Mar 2020 19:00:51 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=17361 ]]> **New dates announced**

The 23rd edition of EuroCucina will be held in June (16-21st) with the theme of “sustainability, innovation and sensory perception: kitchens go circular”.

EuroCucina, the benchmark kitchen sector exhibition at international level, brings together 84 exhibitors ranged over an area equal to around 19,154 square metres, mainly but not exclusively, in Pavilions 9 and 11.

EuroCucina
Zampieri as seen at EuroCucina 2018

As of this year, EuroCucina is adopting an extended exhibitive format, allowing furniture companies specialising in total living to showcase their kitchen concepts on their respective stands at the Salone International del Mobile and S.Project, underscoring the way this space is evolving.

First and foremost, EuroCucina will re-establish the kitchen as the primary space in which best to enjoy social interaction and fulfil personal needs. Obviously too, by adapting this space to modern life by focusing on rationality, functionality, technical innovation and contemporary shapes and, in terms of sustainability, by coming up with durable solutions and smart technologies to cut consumption and allow for the recycling of water, energy and waste.

EuroCucina
Astra Cucine as seen at EuroCucina 2018

The boundaries between the kitchen and other domestic spaces will continue to become increasingly blurred. The space will become steadily more fluid, hybrid and integrated and a new centre of gravity. The modern domestic hub will become even more of a social aggregator and provider of essential needs. Islands will increasingly become the live, beating hearts of the space, with apparently compact and solid units that open up to reveal their many functions as needed – from super-equipped laboratories of taste to contemporary family tables around which people gather to eat, meet, chat, perform myriad domestic tasks and even work.

EuroCucina
TM Italia as seen at EuroCucina 2018

As it evolves into a single space, other design measures will help to revolutionise the kitchen – base units will be pressed increasingly into service; they will be made deeper to make for easier working; elegant, versatile wall units or central islands will help integrate as well as mark out the different areas, foldaway kitchens for smaller spaces will make a comeback, and here too there will be no lack of wow effect.

Particular attention is being devoted to kitchen finishes and to colour, with black and white no longer the order of the day but giving way to nature-inspired hues. In what really is the creative hub of the home. We will see a combination of matte and glossy shades in alternating neutral hues and bright colours. Even gold.

EuroCucina

EuroCucina 2020 will serve as a reflection of today’s multifaceted and dynamic society, showcasing customisable solutions right down to the last detail: flexible, modular and tailored.

SaloneSatellite 2020 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2020/02/24/salonesatellite-2020/ Sun, 23 Feb 2020 19:00:03 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=17324 ]]> With the theme “Designing for our Future Selves”, SaloneSatellite 2020 will be the 23rd edition of this amazing event, dedicated to talented young designers.

SaloneSatelliteHeld as part of the Salone del Mobile.Milano show in June, SaloneSatellite is a unique opportunity for young creatives and students from design schools to present their designs, prototypes and ideas. Talent scouts from companies world-wide attend to cement partnerships with those who will be the most sought-after designers of the future.

Applications are assessed and invitations issue to 600 emerging young designers to showcase their creative skills in a 3,100 square metre exhibition space in Pavilions 22-24.

SaloneSatelliteThe idea of the theme “Designing for our Future Selves” is to encourage emerging designers to focus on the type of projects that take the huge variety of human beings into consideration along with our changing needs over our lifetimes. This could encompass design for disability but also design for autonomy, comfort, movement, usability, interaction or safety, whether specific, temporary or permanent.

The 27 schools and universities invited to showcase shapes, colours, materials, cultural processes and skills referencing their own regions will put the spotlight on craftsmanship from all over the world. Four new schools and universities are represented for the very first time this year: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan and Paraguay.

SaloneSatelliteAs always, a prestigious Selection Committee made up of internationally renowned figures
in the design, planning and communication world has cast its eye over the proposals of
myriad new designers, chaired by Marva Griffin Wilshire, Founder and Curator of SaloneSatellite.

Now into its 11th edition, the SaloneSatellite Award marks a further step in facilitating
interface between supply and demand, between entrepreneurs and designers, between
creativity and manufacturing. The competitors have also been informed of this year’s theme, while being absolutely free to adhere to it or not when working up their prototype
entries. The Award is assigned by an international jury of figures from the design world –
chaired from the very first edition onwards by Paola Antonelli (Senior Curator of the
Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA and curator of the XXII Triennale di
Milano) – which will select the top 3 contenders and assign 2 Special Mentions.

59th Edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano: Designing Beauty https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2020/02/20/59th-edition-of-the-salone-del-mobile-milano-designing-beauty/ Wed, 19 Feb 2020 19:00:23 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=17317 ]]> Editor Melanie Gardener was lucky enough to fly to Italy last week for the official launch of the 59th Edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano. The theme this year is “Designing Beauty” which adds the extra term “Beauty” to the show’s Manifesto.

The next edition will take place in Milan from 16-21 June. 2020 marks the world’s debut appearance in the Manifesto reflecting the principal of experimenting with harmony of form, shaping the “right”material and achieving a high degree of sustainability.

Along with a focus on sustainability, the spotlight will again be on Milan, an international city capable of attracting investors and investments from all over the world, and a city that is loved by young people because, besides the art and architecture of the past, the new
is tangible.

Salone del Mobile.Milano
President of Salone del Mobile, Claudio Luti, at the press conference. Image courtesy Salone del Mobile.Milano.

At the official launch Claudio Luti, President Salone del Mobile, had this to say: “The 2020 edition of the Salone del Mobile.Milano will testify to the furniture companies’ ethical and virtuous strategies. What we need now is an ethical approach to design that can bolster the search for solutions that are as sustainable as possible in a global context, and an increasing focus on the demands of the upcoming generations, who are more interested than ever in the intrinsic value of what they purchase for their domestic and work environments.

We will see a lot of companies investing in environmentally-friendly and personal wellness products, and a surge towards a better future, encapsulated by the word “Beauty” which, not surprisingly, has been added to the Salone del Mobile.Milano Manifesto. The constant quest for beauty, meaning an assortment of different factors, will be the key that will allow the Salone del Mobile to strengthen and consolidate its global leadership position over the coming years and to predict the lifestyles of the future.”

Emanuele Orsini, President of Federlegno Arredo Eventi, echoed these sentiments, saying: “The Salone has now become a veritable “institution” and, as such, is the harbinger of a future in which development, innovation and sustainability will work together – promoting Beauty in its widest sense, in a word. I have to say that many businesses within the sector have already embarked upon the path of circular economy, and the figures are there to show for it: 72% have invested in the reuse of recyclable materials, 44% use recycled products, 67% are committed to correct end of life disposal procedures, 49% are into energy saving and 37% to the use of renewable energies”.

Salone del Mobile.MilanoSalone del Mobile.Milano 2020 will bring together more than 2,200 exhibitors in total and 600 young designers under 35 as part of SaloneSatellite. The show will incorporate the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Workplace3.0, EuroCucina, FTK (Technology for the Kitchen) and the International Bathroom Exhibition (Salone Bagno).

This year the major difference is the expansion of EuroCucina in an extended exhibitive format – through S.Project – which will underscore the way in which the kitchen is evolving and becoming increasingly incorporated into living rooms.

As always, some 600 young designers will take part in the 23rd SaloneSatellite. This year’s theme is “Designing for our Future Selves” and invites participants to reflect on inclusive design that promotes autonomy, comfort, movement, user-friendliness, interaction and safety for all.

A special event, situated in Palazzo Reale’s Sala delle Cariatidi, will see a monumental site-specific audio-visual installation based on the 10 values set out in the Manifesto. 10 films d’auter by 10 leading Italian filmmakers will be screened. Each filmmaker has taken a word from the Manifesto and interpreted it in their own imitable style, turning it into a short film.

The Saguaro design study https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/05/21/the-saguaro-design-study/ Mon, 20 May 2019 20:00:23 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15831 ]]> At this year’s ISH, burgbad presented the Saguaro design study, the result of a collaboration with Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The experimental bathroom design Saguaro was created by design students Vitalij Krist and Florian Wagner. Both the appearance and construction was inspired by the cactus it’s named after: the slightly surreal-looking design features a central pedestal, which is positioned on a shower tray; several metal pipes sprout up from it like the vertical arms of the saguaro.

The Saguaro design studyThis unconventional appearance reinforces the impression of a sculpture. The concrete surface of the shower tray and pedestal contrast with individual segments and fittings made of blackened stainless steel, some of which use decorative gold-coloured elements for accentuation.

The Saguaro design study
burgbad ISH 2019 | Messestand von Bottega + Ehrhardt Architekten

Saguaro was developed as part of “burgbad lab”, a series of workshops that the globally active bathroom furniture manufacturer initiated in 2017. The series of workshops is dedicated to promising topics like sustainable and universal design and, in collaboration with universities and colleges, invites students to develop designs that take these topics into account. The Schmallenberg-based company has also created the “burgbad campus” platform specially to present the results of the burgbad lab and give students the opportunity to show their designs to a larger audience of trade professionals at relevant trade fairs like the ISH.

The Saguaro design studyIn the two designers’ vision, their concept with forms based on simple geometric solids replaces an entire (bath-) room. The underlying idea is to detach the bathroom from the wall and design it independently of the architecture. In order to achieve that, the two design students from Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts centered all the drain and supply lines at a single point to create three usage areas: the washbasin, the toilet and the shower, which are positioned in a circular arrangement at an angle of 120 degrees to one another.

In its totality, the Saguaro concept also imitates the cactus’s ability to save water by using vacuum drain technology, which saves more water and waste water than conventional processes.

The Saguaro design studyAs an innovation-driven company and “hidden champion”, burgbad looks for new, promising concepts that reconcile sustainability and densification with customers’ desire for a personalised living environment and generation-spanning convenience. As the first German bathroom furniture manufacturer to be awarded the “Climate-Neutral Furniture Manufacturer” label by the German Quality Assurance Association for Furniture (DGM), burgbad has already achieved carbon-neutral production; its next goal is the carbon-neutral product. Universal design and sustainability are therefore the leading themes for the burgbad lab, a project in which the company actively seeks to swap ideas with the upcoming generation of designers.

We’d love to know your opinion on these innovative and incredibly interesting designs. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Kosmo designed by GI-RA for antoniolupi https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/05/14/kosmo-designed-by-gi-ra-for-antoniolupi/ Mon, 13 May 2019 20:00:55 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15791 ]]> Kosmo deisgned by GI-RA for antonoiolupi is a showerhead that guarantees total relaxation with the softest water jets that create an incredible visual aesthetic. This product was showcased on the antoniolupi stand at ISH 2019. Video below courtesy antoniolupi.

Kosmo celebrates the formal and essential aspect of water which highlights its almost immaterial being and creates a continuous reflection and changing of dialogues with light together with thousands of fragments along the surface of the water.

Kosmo Kosmo is the perfect combination of functionality and a touch of magic as is so often the case with products from antoniolupi. Not only does the product aim for maximum customer satisfaction, it also stays true to antoniolupi’s constant search for innovation, to excite the user and make every experience unique.

KosmoWater has long held a fascination for designers. It’s uniqueness often challenges design and designers to develop products that can not only contain it, but transform it and apply it for a range of purposes. Projects in the past have utilised such devices as geometrical shapes and volumes together with a range of materials to celebrate the transparency of water, to channel its beneficial power, and to enhance and guarantee well-being.

KosmoWith Kosmo, antoniolupi has gone beyond this construct with a design that shapes the water without containing it. Thanks to the use of air and the particular arrangement of the nozzles, the Kosmo showerhead can shape water. The company says the shower “gives life to a particular jet that refers to the image of soap bubbles that are formed thanks to a light breath, to marine jellyfish that move ethereally between the waves, to a fountain of water in which the gushes that originate from the center describe a hemispherical shell of water that gradually dissolves during its fall”.

A selection of antoniolupi products are available in Australia via Minosa.

Woodio water-resistant wood washbasins https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/04/02/woodio-water-resistant-wood-washbasins/ Mon, 01 Apr 2019 19:00:47 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15488 ]]> Woodio water-resistant wood washbasins combine state-of-the-art eco-friendly innovation with minimalist, timeless design. A pioneer in eco-design, Finnish design company Woodio’s ground-breaking washbasins are manufactured from the world’s first waterproof wood composite and represent the very best in Scandinavian design: a unique design language, high quality and eco-friendliness.

WoodioWoodio received the respected Design Plus powered by ISH 2019 award at the Frankfurt ISH 2019 fair.

WoodioWoodio manufactures ecofriendly and eye-catchingly stylish bathroom washbasins out of a completely new and innovative material: the world’s first water resistant solid wood composite that uniquely combines wood and resin. The man behind the innovation is Woodio’s CEO Petro Lahtinen, who has a PhD in chemistry.

“Woodio was born out of a fascination with the opportunities of contemporary wood technology. Our way of doing things is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Finnish wood industry, while, at the same time, bringing wood as a material to a whole new level, to the modern day”, Lahtinen says.

WoodioWoodio’s main products are washbasins that currently come in 16 different models from rounded to angular. The products, which are designed and made in Finland, are eco-friendly both in their materials and manufacturing processes.

Woodio’s products require zero maintenance and they are easy to clean. The wood composite is resilient to wear and does not react to changes in temperature. That is why Woodio products are also well-suited for public spaces and they are already used in hotels and restaurants. The washbasin’s durability is guaranteed with a five-year product warranty.

WoodioComing in a wide variety of colours and different surface structures, the material can be molded into wall panels, kitchen counters, toilet bowls, small objects and other items. The appearance of the material can be customised almost endlessly with natural dyes and wood chips in different sizes.

Design Plus powered by ISH 2019 is an international competition for ISH exhibitors organised by the German Design Council for Messe Frankfurt. The competition honours products that intelligently combine technology and design. Aspects such as innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency play a significant role in the assessment.

BetteSpace bath collection https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/04/01/bettespace-bath-collection/ Sun, 31 Mar 2019 19:00:13 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15480 ]]> The new BetteSpace bath collection has been optimised for space and quality time and makes intelligent use of space in small and medium-sized bathrooms. Made from glazed titanium steel, the BetteSpace bath collection uses trapezoid geometries to make the optimum use of the available space whilst also offering the highest bathing comfort.

There are three versions to choose from to suit user preferences and the available space: the space-saving BetteSpace S, the bath/shower combination BetteSpace M and the two-seater BetteSpace L. All come with a thirty year warranty.

The design of the baths is the work of the German design studio Tesseraux + Partner, which has developed the optimised shape for BetteSpace. The base is a rectangular trapeze, which saves precious space in the bathroom. The baths also all have a wide back for comfortable sitting and a generous lying area of 170cm in length. This is perfect for an extra-long bath and allows even tall people to immerse themselves and forget about the outside world.

BetteSpace bath collection
BetteSpace S

BetteSpace S is the most space-saving version in the collection. Like the others, this bath is a bather-friendly 170cm long. However, measuring 75cm wide on the lying side and 60 cm along the foot end, it also fully utilises every centimetre of the available space in small and medium-sized bathrooms. There is plenty of room for one person to enjoy complete bathing fun, and with a depth of 42 cm it is also ideal for comfortable immersion.

BetteSpace bath collection
BetteSpace M

If there is only room for a bath or a shower in the bathroom but both are desired, then BetteSpace M is the perfect compromise. Measuring 90cm wide at the foot end and 75cm at the top, with a depth of 42cm the bath also offers enough space for showering, and more than enough for splashing.

BetteSpace bath collection
BetteSpace L

BetteSpace L even has enough space for two to enjoy a pleasant bath together – and as the lying side is 130cm wide, they can also sit side-by-side. And because the foot end is 75cm wide, it saves almost half a square metre of space in the bathroom. This provides more freedom of movement in small and medium-sized bathrooms without having to forego comfort or wellness.

What is typical of all three BetteSpace baths by Bette is the high manufacturing quality used to form the glazed titanium steel. Gentle angles and corner radii where the body snuggles against the tub while bathing, and defined edges and corners where clever integration in the room aesthetic is important.

The glazed titanium steel itself is extremely robust and durable with a skin-friendly surface that retains warmth and is also extremely easy to look after.

JEE-O Cone Series https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/03/29/jee-o-cone-series/ Thu, 28 Mar 2019 19:00:44 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15444 ]]> Presenting the JEE-O Cone Series by Osiris Hertman and launched as a new collection at this year’s ISH in Frankfurt, Germany.

JEE-O Cone SeriesThe Cone Series is the perfect balance of playfulness and boldness. From a distance, the design seems elementary, but a closer look reveals unusual details and an elegant finish, expressing the craftsmanship Osiris always seeks in his designs.

JEE-O Cone Series JEE-O Cone Series

Osiris believes that, while we should be careful in our use of water, we can still enjoy it. Our bathrooms are gradually becoming places of relaxation, often with seats, music, plants, and if there is enough space, saunas, fireplaces and pretty views. They are now spaces to be enjoyed and to recharge so we can deal with a world that is much busier and more demanding than ever before. Good indoor spaces should have the same ambiance as our
natural surroundings and provide peace and quiet.

JEE-O Cone SeriesThe conical shape, the basis for this series, can be found in the smallest details, for example, the handles are modelled on safe doors. To JEE-O, the design is paramount, as it is the essence of the product.

The JEE-O Cone Series consists of freestanding showers, a freestanding bath mixer, wall and ceiling showers, wall and top mounted basin mixers, a bath and basins. The collection is made from stainless steel with a structured black finish while the baths and basins are made from DADOquartz.

JEE-O Cone SeriesOsiris Hertman attended Eindhoven’s Design Academy then went on to work for Marcel Wanders as a designer. Having left to set up his own studio, he now focuses on interior designs, accessories and the Buddha to Buddha brand of hand-made silver jewellery. His background in product design is revealed in his love for artisanal materials and products. With the Osiris Hertman Studio, he works on projects everywhere, from the Netherlands to Moscow and from Indonesia to Monaco.

The JEE-O Cone Series will be available exclusively in Australia via Argent Australia. At this stage the showers and basin sets will be the first to be brought in.

A day with Kaldewei https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/03/26/a-day-with-kaldewei/ Mon, 25 Mar 2019 19:00:46 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15530 ]]> We left our hotel in Haslach and embarked on a day of travelling as we headed north to Münster. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the hotel and the following morning we jumped on the bus to the home of Kaldewei in Ahlen.

KaldeweiThe Kaldewei Iconic World building is an incredible space. Built on the original site of Kaldewei, the floor plan of the original building has been preserved as a reminder of the “home” of Kaldewei and the company’s history.

KaldeweiOur host, Brandi Bridges, head of Iconic World, gave us a most informative tour of Iconic World and we were able to spend some time engaging with a range of products – some of which had been launched the week before at ISH. We also had an opportunity to delve behind the scenes and view the area where much of the testing and engineering takes place to see how the company tests and perfects its products.

KaldeweiWe were also able to test some of the products for ourselves – dropping bowling balls directly onto steel enamelled trays, for example, or using a wire brush, nail polish and direct flame to test the resilience of the surface.

Kaldewei
Don’t we all look cute in our hard hats?

We were then taken across to the factory where we followed the process of creating these products. We saw the steel in its original form and then were it was formed around the mould and how it evolves from the raw product through the stamping process, to the enamelling process, to the firing process and all the way to the quality control. Such is the level of quality control at Kaldewei that the employees working in this section only do 30 minute shifts before they cycle to a different task. This is to ensure the eyes checking every product are as fresh as possible.

Another delicious lunch was served then we enjoyed a free afternoon to rest, pack, work etc… Later that afternoon we took taxis into the centre of Munster for a guided city tour and a sumptuous dinner at Altes Gasthaus Leve.

We can’t believe the tour has come to an end so quickly but we’ve all had an amazing time and enjoyed such fabulous hospitality from our sponsors. Thank you Kaldewei!

A day with Duravit https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/03/25/a-day-with-duravit/ Sun, 24 Mar 2019 19:00:53 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15522 ]]> Our day with Duravit dawned bright and sunny and we excitedly boarded the bus for the short journey to Hornberg and the home of the Duravit Design Centre.

day with DuravitThe creation of renowned designer Philippe Starck, the Duravit Design Centre is five storeys of inspiring products and product design and houses the company’s administration departments as well as the most amazing viewing platform. The viewing platform is – literally – the largest toilet in the world and stands proudly at the front of the building. Accessed from the fourth floor, the viewing platform provides a fabulous opportunity to look down on the surrounding views of Hornberg.

day with Duravit
Yes, that’s all of us standing in the bowl of a giant toilet!

We were greeted by our host, Sarah Storz, who took us through a short introduction to the company – the history of the brand and how the company evolved. We then walked through the ceramic factory and it was an eye-opening experience to see just how the ceramic pieces are constructed – from the very beginning of the process with the design and creation of the mould, to the combination of natural products and how precisely they must be poured into the moulds and then monitored.

day with DuravitWe were able to follow the process through each quality control stage as the product was de-moulded, finished and prepared for glazing. So much of this process is still done by hand and eye with expert craftsmen to ensure the high quality the company expects.

Following the ceramic factory we spent a long time enjoying the five floors of showroom products and displays. It truly was overwhelming – and very inspiring – to see all the products showcased in the best surroundings.

day with DuravitAfter a delicious lunch we again boarded the bus to head to Schenkenzell where Duravit has its furniture factory. It is here the gorgeous furniture pieces that go so well with the company’s basins, baths and tapware are designed and created.

day with DuravitA quick bus trip later and we were in Alpirsbach where we were treated to a guided tour through the Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu brewery which was a real step back through time to the earliest brewing days in the region. We also had the opportunity to sample a few beers from the brewery before another amazing meal and a late-night bus back to the hotel.

Thank you Duravit for being fabulous hosts!

Intreccio by antoniolupi https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/03/22/intreccio-by-antoniolupi/ Thu, 21 Mar 2019 19:00:02 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15473 ]]> Designed by Paolo Ulian, this stunning basin is Intreccio by antoniolupi as seen at this year’s ISH in Frankfurt. Described as a basket for water made of natural light marble, the basin has the shape of a wicker basket or a flower with a ringed corolla. Its construction allows for light to stream unexpectedly through openings which gives the marble structure an unexpected lightness.

Intreccio by antoniolupiIntreccio by antoniolupi is a sophisticated freestanding washbasin which is the result of a collaboration undertaken by antoniolupi and Paolo Ulian to investigate the relationship between the stunning ancient material of marble and new processing techniques.

Intreccio by antoniolupiThe washbasin’s dynamic form is thanks to the geometry of the concentric layers that are staggered when they are overlapped. Growing in size as they ascend, the individual pieces create a play on light and dark, full and empty, which is obtained by the variation of light on the concave or convex shapes.

Intreccio by antoniolupiCreated from a single block of marble where the cuts have been optimised to generate all the parts necessary to craft the three-dimensional volume. Thanks to new technologies in numerical control machining technologies, antoniolupi has been able to obtain curvilinear, thin shapes that belie the fact they are pieces of marble.

Intreccio by antoniolupiPart of the methodology behind the design was the investigation of how to save resources and materials. For Intreccio, antoniolupi has taken a single block of marble, divided into four, from which four washbasins are made. The rings that make up Intreccio are concentric because they are cut one inside the other from the block of marble. This drastically reduces the waste produced by the cut.

HansgroheWe started back at the Aquademie where we had a great overview of the Hansgrohe and Axor brands – their history, origins, and plans for the future. It was a really interesting look at what drives the brands and a great insight into how the company stays relevant, constantly innovates and leads the industry in many areas.

We also had the chance to walk through the Hansgrohe Loft Cube. LoftCube is a design intended for a mobile, flexible lifestyle and is a home you can, literally, take with you when you move. It incorporates a number of innovative design ideas for multi-functional living and is available in three sizes.

HansgroheFollowing lunch, we watched a fascinating motion picture that showcased the company and the two brands, then jumped back on the bus for a short trip to Hansgrohe’s second factory in Schiltach. This factory houses the faucet production plant and we were able to follow the process from start to finish to learn how raw brass is turned into a top-quality designer faucet. This plant has a foundry on site and it was fascinating to see it in action.

HansgroheLate in the afternoon we were lucky enough to have some free time to allow us to walk around and enjoy the stunningly pretty town of Schiltach. Hansgrohe has been based in Schiltach since its inception in 1901 by Hans Grohe. What began as a small, three-man operation here in Schiltach has become a company with 33 subsidiaries, 22 sales offices and approximately 4700 employees world-wide. Around 60% of Hansgrohe’s employees work in Germany and many of them are employed at the company headquarters in Schiltach.

HansgroheWe finished our day with an amazing dinner courtesy Hansgrohe. The company has been the most amazing host and we can’t wait to see what is coming when we visit with Duravit.

Viu ceramics and XViu furniture from Duravit https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/03/18/viu-ceramics-and-xviu-furniture-from-duravit/ Sun, 17 Mar 2019 19:00:56 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15435 ]]> Unveiled at ISH last week is the new Viu ceramics and XViu furniture from Duravit which exudes the elegance of post-industrial design with soft, organic forms and precise geometry and detailing.

Viu ceramics and XViu furnitureWith the Viu ceramics range, the XViu furniture range, and the matching bathtubs, Duravit and sieger design present a complete bathroom range that exudes forward-looking design. Sharp contrasts arise from surfaces that combine the finest ceramics, glass and metal with matte lacquers or high-quality woods.

Viu ceramics and XViu furnitureThe highlight is a washing area variant based on the patented Duravit c-bonded technology. The exterior is a strict rectangle, while the interior features gentle organic curves with a spacious inner basin and generous shelf. The edge running along the tap platform continues as a subtle outer line. The subtle detail of the horizontal overflow within the basin underlines the horizontal alignment of the external shape. The ceramic on the inside is reminiscent of the softness of water.

Some surprising details: The white ceramic cover of the push-open valve is flush with the inner basin in the open position. The prominent contour of the supporting metal console with its V-shape profile in elegant Champagne Matt or avant garde Black Matt creates dynamic interest. Individual combinations can be realized thanks to the glass shelf which is available in four colors.

Viu ceramics and XViu furnitureFrom a different angle, the three-dimensional feet of the metal console are visually transformed into fine lines. This level of perfection extends right into the tiniest detail. The acrylic paneling on the underside of the basin conceals the fixing structure, cables, and connecting hoses, with the result that the elaborate technology, for example for the D.1e electronic faucet, does not impact the design.

Fully glazed from beneath, the Viu washbasins, available in five sizes, are also ideally suited as individual solutions. Their shape follows the design of the c-bonded washbasin. The alternative variants for the washing area, with furniture washbasin, built-in washbasin, or above-counter washbasin and matching vanity unit with pull-out compartment or two drawers, feature striking V-shaped lateral aluminum profiles, which are also available in Champagne Matt and Black Matt. This lends the XViu furniture range its striking contour.

Viu ceramics and XViu furnitureA further highlight of the XViu series is the free-standing bathtub, an eye-catching centerpiece. Here, too, the prominent metal frame with the familiar V-shaped profile comes in Champagne Matt or Black Matt as a contrast to the high-gloss white acrylic. It supports the free-standing bathtub (two sizes: 160 x 80 cm and 180 x 80 cm), itself a precise rectangle when viewed from above, with an ergonomic and organic free form interior. The precise finishing and perfect aesthetics, also subtly integrating the outlet, underline the sophisticated design.

“His & Hers” bathroom concept from Villeroy & Boch https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/03/15/his-hers-bathroom-concept-from-villeroy-boch/ Thu, 14 Mar 2019 19:00:58 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15425 ]]> As seen at this year’s ISH (yesterday in fact) this is the visually stunning “His & Hers” bathroom concept from Villeroy & Boch. Here, designer Gesa Hansen (who has been working with Villeroy & Boch for many years) explains her motivations behind the collection. Against the backdrop of gender discussions and equality, Gesa has turned her attention to the idea of the “His & Hers” bathroom which was displayed as an artistic installation at the Villeroy & Boch stand.

"His & Hers" bathroomGesa says, “”His & Hers” is all about differences and similarities, convergence and contrasts, men and women, masculinity and femininity – and if and how all that is reflected in the bathroom”. The concept is expressed by illustrating the small differences in men’s and women’s bathroom rituals – without advocating a rigid separation. Gesa explains that what at first may seem completely different, is often not that dissimilar and notes “on the whole, I think that there are more similarities than differences”.

When asked if she believes there is such a thing as a men’s or women’s bathroom, Gesa does not see it as a black-and-white answer. “When it comes to colours, there are so many similarities that a woman can also feel at ease in “his” bathroom and vice versa. But when it comes to the atmosphere and furnishings, men and women do tend to have different priorities”, she explains.

"His & Hers" bathroom“For me, the colour concept is a manifestation of individuality. Ultimately, it’s not the colours themselves that differentiate between male and female, but rather their composition and dosage. I applied all the colours for “His & Hers” extensively and then let them interact with each other to create an effect”.

While Gesa does see some colours as typically masculine or feminine she sees that most are universal. “For instance, pink is a strong feminine colour, which I didn’t want to withhold from “Hers” and so added it as a colourful highlight. Bold greens, reds and blues feature in both “His” and “Hers”. However, I did vary the look of the colours: “His” darker, “Hers” warmer,” she says.

"His & Hers" bathroomWhen asked if the functional features of the “His & Hers” collection were deliberate she answers emphatically. “Yes, that was also intentional. When it comes to functionality, “His & Hers” need to meet other demands, demands that tend to be more masculine or more feminine. Men like bathrooms to be practical and functional. Everything they use on a daily basis needs to be within easy reach. And because men prefer to take showers rather than baths, “His” has a more spacious shower area.

Mod cons are also indispensable in “Hers”. However, an atmosphere where she can relax and feel good is more important. The bathroom needs to be cosy, natural, comfortable, even a little secretive – yes, diva-like, like a boudoir. This is why the interior design here
is a little more playful. And because women don’t necessarily want to have their bathroom paraphernalia and cosmetics on display, I focused more on furniture for “Hers”.”

"His & Hers" bathroomWhen asked to summarise the collection, Gesa finds it easy to answer. “”His & Hers” is an artistic projection, which combines colour concepts with interior design, while revealing male and female characteristics. The colour concepts work for both men and women, there are small differences when it comes to furnishings. Nonetheless, for me, “His & Hers” is a call for equality and similarity.

Fir Italia – ISH preview https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/02/13/fir-italia-ish-preview/ Tue, 12 Feb 2019 19:00:12 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15234 ]]> The new tap collection “Keilo 63” from Fir Italia will be launched at ISH next month as the Italian company attends the leading trade fair in the world of bathrooms, energy saving technology, air conditioning and renewable energy.

Fir Italia - ISH previewISH brings together two different sectors but with a common denominator: water and energy. Two universes that Fir Italia has been embracing for years. In fact, Fir Italia is characterised by a strong aptitude for innovation both in terms of aesthetics and technology and, over time, has gained extensive experience, growing together with the evolution of tastes and needs of many generations of people.

Fir Italia - ISH previewThe analysis of people’s tastes and needs is the basis on which the design of each product is based but which cannot fail to take into account the needs of the environment and the protection of our primary resources, which is why, over the years, Fir Italia has designed a range of ‘green’ energy-saving systems.

Fir Italia - ISH previewThe company describes the new collection “Keilo 63” as “the visual enhancement of rationality. With sharp angles and squared shapes, the collection is the extreme development of a visual idea that wants to enhance the value of simplicity and clean design.

The rigidity and rationality of this collection of taps, characterised by precisely-squared lines, means it is able to insert itself naturally in different modern bathroom settings.

Fir Italia - ISH previewFir Italia constantly strives to achieve the highest quality standards for its taps, with finishings of maximum strength without ever forgetting an exclusive, sophisticated design that is always at the forefront.

For more than 60 years, Fir Italia, a company working in the designer taps sector, has been a furnishing reference point for bathrooms and kitchens, both domestic and professional. ISH presents “Colour Selection” https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2019/02/01/ish-presents-colour-selection/ Thu, 31 Jan 2019 19:00:29 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=15136 ]]> Organised by Messe Frankfurt and the German Sanitary Industry Association (VDS), the ISH ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend forum presents “Colour Selection”, showcasing current colour trends in interior design and showing how these create new possibilities for the sanitary sector. Jens J. Wischmann, General Manager of the VDS, explains why colour is such an important topic for the next evolutionary step in bathroom design and defines the possibilities arising from the new openness for colour and lifestyle.

ISH Colour Selections
Jens Wischmann, Managing Director, German Sanitary Industry Association (VDS), © Behrendt und Rausch Fotografie

For the ISH 2019 the VDS is making colour the key theme of its ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend forum. Why?

Colour is a key theme across the whole field of interior design – with a broad spectrum of different colour options from plain colours to a predominance of pattern. Only in the bathroom is there a reluctance to look at colour. We think it is now time to get behind those in our industry who show the courage to embrace colour as a topic in itself – and not just for accessories! Ultimately, the bathroom has become a room that calls for a sense of homeliness and personalisation.

Surely colour has always been part of the ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ shows?

Colour has been supplementary, but not a topic on its own. Over the last few years we have looked at the bathroom primarily in terms of its functionality and societal role. In 2015 the ISH’s ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend forum took the slogan ‘free bathroom’ to focus on the concept of a cross-generational bathroom, while at the ISH in 2017 the main, so-called mega-trend was ‘bathroom personalisation’. This year we describe the transformation of the bathroom into a lifestyle space – according to aesthetic criteria.

With design focussing increasingly on making the bathroom a homely space, why is colour so important in this respect?

White is still by far the dominant colour in existing bathrooms. Over the last few years colour choice has tended to stay with tradition. If in doubt building owners choose a neutral colour scheme to avoid the risk that a colour is quick to go out of fashion. On top of this, the bathroom is for certain the room that is the least frequently redecorated and refurbished. 1970s bathrooms often had an overabundance of intense colours with almost every bathroom interior matched to just one single colour such as Bahama beige. Today, the buzzword is variety, so-called mix and match, reflecting a change in interior design and an increase in expectations vis-à-vis the modern bathroom.

How do you stop and / or solve this fixation with white?

We are not looking to stop anything at all. Yes, white is a fashion colour, just like black. The trick is to find a balance between embracing current trends and choosing colour schemes that have long-lasting appeal. Over the last few years we have seen change across the world with suppliers promoting a range of sanitary products on a mix and match basis. Building owners can create their ideal bathroom from a plethora of individual modules. Variety is also found in the different designs, surfaces and materials available with bathroom designers, architects, interior designers and even trades people being able to create a fully harmonised design concept for their customers. To meet this objective it goes without saying that colour has a part to play in the bathroom.

Does this make bathroom planning more complicated?

Designing and fitting a bathroom, like a kitchen, is without doubt the most complicated project in the home. You need to coordinate different trades and plumbing fixtures require fixed installation. Nevertheless, users express a strong wish for a bathroom to have an appeal of its own, which increasingly requires bathroom designers to embrace the lifestyle aspect in relation to colours, materials, architectural and, of course, also lighting design.

What is the role of lighting in bathroom design?

Light plays a big part in our daily life – primarily in relation to well-being. Different phases of bathroom use require different lighting solutions: quick use in the morning, perhaps a more leisurely time spent in the evening, while at night you only need to find the toilet. Indeed, it is amazing the effect lighting has on a bathroom and its design! As a result, there is much to consider when designing intelligent lighting in the context of a lifestyle bathroom, including the use of emotional or functional lighting, having bright lighting for ergonomically critical places or the incorporation of natural light.

Does this not make the new bathroom more expensive?

Lifestyle bathrooms certainly require additional work in terms of services provided and trades involved. Whilst sanitary product manufacturers do simplify the selection process using application examples and online configuration tools, the wide range of product variations almost presupposes a design input. Bespoke DIY store paint mixing is not going to guarantee the kind of harmonious, unified design concept as might be developed by an interior designer. Playing safe means seeking the creative input of a bathroom consultant – and this is going to take time. It will prevent mistakes in the design process, and, what is more, with the bathroom designer creating the perfect bathroom based on the needs of the client and the spatial constraints, it also ensures that the bathroom is user friendly. To assist in this process the sanitary industry purposely provides help with its choice of colours and its offer of different colour schemes.

With the enormously wide range of products and new technologies on offer, the building owner is spoilt for choice. Is the bathroom designer a kind of personal trainer for the bespoke bathroom?

Yes, whilst not everyone needs a personal trainer from the start, you certainly cannot be sure of getting a lifestyle bathroom just by clicking on great products in an online shop.

So, the demands placed on trades, retail and designers are also changing?

No doubt we are about to see enormous changes, whether due to increasingly more complex, visible and concealed products and systems, digitalisation or the creative aspect of bathroom construction. Tradespeople offering both lifestyle bathroom design and installation are heroes in my eyes. They are required to continually retrain to keep abreast of current knowledge. The ISH – along with ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ – offers the possibility in compressed form of learning more about current trends and the future of individual bathroom design and to put this knowledge to good use.

The sector is suffering from a lack of skilled people. So, who is going to design the many lifestyle bathrooms forecast for the future?

The potential is enormous and the number of bathrooms that need to be renovated is large. Developing bathrooms into lifestyle rooms will have an impact on all professions involved. The bathroom academy has been set-up as an instrument to support further training in this area. New job descriptions will develop over the longer term and perhaps new, attractive study courses. Most importantly, entrance to the profession must be made easier. Creative careers are in demand and particularly so for the field of bathroom design.

What kind of colour trends can we expect to see in the bathroom of the future?

We have identified twelve current colour trends that we bring together and describe in our ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend show. Our most important finding: When colour plays an important role in a lifestyle bathroom as an element of the overall design, a basic colour or colour combination must have precedence. A colour collage is created – and all other materials and surfaces must buy into this basic theme in a harmonious, unified look.

Is there a bathroom ‘colour of the year’?

We have absolutely no intention of making such a pronouncement. At ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ we show the most important and current possibilities for bathroom design and see ourselves as providing ideas. The message we want to promote is: bathroom colour is no longer a taboo, but rather a door-opener to a lifestyle bathroom.

ISH takes place in Frankfurt from 11 to 15 March 2019. The Kitchen and Bathroom Blog will be attending as part of AIDT’s 2019 Tour so stay tuned for plenty of blog posts and design trend information emanating from the show.

ISH 2019 Colour Trend Predictions https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2018/12/12/ish-2019-colour-trend-predictions/ Wed, 12 Dec 2018 05:32:05 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=14897 ]]> Lifestyle is still the dominant notion behind the trends for the bathroom – and ISH 2019 will be exhibiting more shades of colour than ever before. And the demand for variety is equally in evidence when it comes to materials, too: along with wood, it is marble and new kinds of metallic finishes that now play the major role. This trend applies equally to taps and mixers, furniture, surfaces and accessories.

ISH 2019

The ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend show at the heart of ISH demonstrates this in a close-knit and, at the same time, multifaceted display. The multicoloured approach is one that is being used deliberately as a design element for ‘lifestyle bathrooms’. At ISH 2019 there will be some colourfully challenging bathrooms to be seen – from brightly coloured sanitary ceramics to transparent bathroom furniture in blue and green.

While, in recent decades, minimalist restraint in the colours used signalled elegance and an awareness of design, today it is the courageous use of colour that counts. At the same time, colour in the bathroom does not necessarily mean exorbitant colourfulness – the shift from the dominance of white to a neutral spectrum of browns and greens, of mixed shades, or strong tone-on-tone colour concepts also represent an evolutionary step in the direction of the ‘lifestyle bathroom’.

Grey provides a contrast to richer colour tones. The trend towards a modern bathroom with long-term durability is encouraging the use of this gentler shade. This mid-shade is no newcomer to the bathroom. But, in the upcoming season, it is precisely the greys that will find their place in the timeless modern bathroom. Grey – a mix of white, black with a touch of secrecy – proves itself a multi-talented shade that can complement practically any and every colour family.

ISH 2019

And the colour palette of modern architectural and interior design would be unthinkable without the inclusion of greige. The word greige is a neologism that derives from its two components: grey and beige. It is, therefore, typical of the colour principle that is setting the tone in this current trend in bathroom colours: a colour mix that provides a modern, neutral base shade and has a strongly harmonising effect. Greige is a good example of a whole category of bathroom colours, which have established a long-lasting connection to a second colour and created something new.

At the same time, we are seeing the comeback of various shades of brown. Increasingly, interior designers are choosing neutral and warm natural colours, in order to make the bathroom cosier. The secret lies in the underlying tones – be it mud, clay or terracotta; bronze or rust; olive, pine forest or cedarwood; powder or taupe. Brown can be interpreted in two ways: either as an organically inspired spectrum, that is frequently combined with natural materials to create a harmonious colour palette, or as an allusion to past styles, that is used to artistic effect.

ISH 2019

As befits a warm colourway, gold creates optical highlights in the bathroom. Along with platinum and copper, this precious metal has become a ready highlight of bathroom design. Thus, for instance, wash basins are plated with genuine gold leaf and walls, too, are painted in shades of gold.

Black continues to constitute a clear statement of individuality. This trend, which originated in furnishings, is finding more and more enthusiasts in the bathroom. Black is noble, elegant and modern at one and the same time. In a mix of materials with marble – black-and-white, or green stone, which is particularly popular at the moment – and leather, black has turned into an extravagant classic. In a more rustic combination with lacquered metal furniture, wood and concrete, on the other hand, black is a fitting accompaniment for an industrial style. Even the tap manufacturers are going with this trend. New manufacturing techniques make it possible to offer darker colour gradients down to deep black.

Those seeking exciting colour combinations without any hint of garishness are venturing onto the supreme heights of the art of bathroom design: putting together several colours to create a harmonious overall effect. Colourways that represent a combination of several colours of the same brightness and quality are the most demanding and, at the same time, most individual in this context. But it can be done in all areas of colour. The important thing is that one colour should set the tone and three or four others then work together to help create the harmony of the overall impression.

ISH 2019

A parallel trend is the bathroom bathed in green. This trend felicitously reflects our longing for a natural environment, in which nature is felt to be mankind’s original home. On the other hand, green is, in any case, a popular colour that is very much on trend at the moment and which creates an interesting mood, particularly when combined with plants. And, by using individual products like, for instance, a free-standing bathtub, the bathroom designer can make an unmistakeable statement.

Pastel shades, too, are on trend in the furnishings sector. Mint, rose-pink and light blue create a friendly, welcoming effect and provide colourful accents. Pastel bathrooms evoke a beautiful new world – sometimes overtly trendy, sometimes dreamy, but always with a hint of escapism. If pink is combined with brown fittings – perhaps a light wood floor or corresponding tiles – this emphasises cosiness.

ISH 2019

Blue is becoming increasingly popular in European countries. It is a colour that has a relaxing effect, reminding us of the expanse of sky and stretches of water. Paint manufacturers have modernised the palette of blues considerable in recent years. What have emerged are not only innovative paints for the walls; there are new kinds of paint for tiles that make for a cosy feel. And the rediscovery of marble in interior design is encouraging the use of blue sanitaryware.

White is the traditional bathroom colour. White stands for cleanliness and has been dominant for decades, sometimes, too, as the starting point for a whole host of design approaches. 45 percent of the German population opt for this timeless basic colour – a colour that goes with anything. One can easily understand the thinking behind it: products for the bathroom must sparkle for as long as possible – sparkling clean and in a gleaming colour. Over 80 percent of ceramic products sold in Germany are white. More recently, sanitaryware manufacturers have even been offering a range of different shades of white.

The ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ trend show will showcase, in its ‘Colour Selection’, the wide variety of possible applications of current trends in the use of colour for interior design in the sanitation sector. The special show is being organised as part of ISH 2019 by Messe Frankfurt and the Association of the German Sanitation Industry (Vereinigung der Deutschen Sanitärwirtschaft – VDS) and will be held in the Saal Europa, Hall 4.0, from 11 to 15 March 2019. In addition, ISH will be exhibiting an extensive range of products and services covering a variety of current issues in the sanitation industry and will be presenting innovative technical solutions for some of the key challenges in the sector. Amongst a host of other things scheduled for 2019, there will be a dedicated area in Hall 3.1 devoted to the question of demographic change and entitled ‘The therapeutic bathroom 2030’, where the trade and professional visitors to the show can gain hands-on experience and check out the exhibits for themselves.

Minosa at ISH
The dynamic design duo behind some of Australia’s most awarded bathrooms will be visiting ISH in March next year as part of AIDT’s 2019 Tour

Have you previously visited ISH?

No, we haven’t but ISH has been on our radar as since we started Minosa. Because of its focus on setting trends for tomorrow’s bathroom designs, water and energy sustainability and intelligent home systems, we have always seen this show as a leader for bathroom innovation and technology.

Minosa at ISH
Minosa’s award winning Bathroom of the Year 2017.

What are your expectations of what you will see at the show?

We have visited many international and local design shows and we find we get the best experiences by going into these events with an open mind and few expectations. We like to look for new ideas and new partners in an environment where the sky is the limit. Plus, we find it so beneficial to be sharing the experience with new and existing industry friends.

What are your expectations of what you will see and experience during our time with Hansgrohe, Duravit and Kaldewei?

We know these three companies and brands are powerhouses synonymous with high-end design and technology in the bathroom world. So to be able to see first-hand how the products are made, the process they go through and to meet the people behind the brands will be a mind-expanding exercise. We’re really keen for the opportunity to learn more about the histories of these companies and their plans for the future.

Minosa at ISH
Darren & Simona believe ISH is a unique opportunity to discover new regions, immerse ourselves in different cultures and to explore the world of design.

You travel regularly to overseas shows, what do you see as the benefit for your business in doing this?

We believe visiting overseas design shows is invaluable both to Minosa and to us as individuals. It is a unique opportunity to discover new regions, immerse ourselves in different cultures and to explore the world of design. We are always looking for companies we can partner with, people we can learn from and people who share like-minded beliefs.

How important is it to see first-hand the displays and exhibitions at the shows?

Looking at pictures or social feeds is one thing, but every time we visit these trade shows it’s the little details, or the people that explain the concept to you, or a discussion later that night when you are recapping on the day, where the most inspiration comes from. These sorts of experiences are impossible to get from a single picture or social media feed.

Minosa at ISH
Darren & Simona are looking forward to finding inspiration in the various displays.

What you do you personally get from taking the time to travel to overseas design and innovation shows?

In our experience you have to find the time and we know that’s sometimes a big ask. It’s easy to get caught up because work will always be there – there will always be a client who has to have something right now – but you need to find time to stop and recharge. The best part of these trips is they are not only good for business and continued learning and professional development but they are fully tax deductible so it makes perfect sense to invest the time and energy in attending. We have created amazing friendships from these trips, where we connect with like-minded people and get to explore new ideas so we see this as something we should always make time for.

Would you like to join Darren & Simona in March 2019 as we travel to Frankfurt to visit ISH then on to immersive visits at the facilities of Hansgrohe, Duravit and Kaldewei? There are only a handful of rooms left available so head on over to aidt.com.au for more information, full itinerary and all inclusions.

ISH preview – Pop up my Bathroom 2019 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2018/10/17/ish-preview-pop-up-my-bathroom-2019/ Tue, 16 Oct 2018 19:00:17 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=14534 ]]> The latest news from ISH 2019 is that the experimental showroom Pop up my Bathroom will be bathed in colour as it provides an insight into the future of colour in bathroom design. Bathroom creations, equipment, furniture and photo-scenarios will all be showcased with social developments, current design trends and technological innovation firmly in mind.

Pop up my Bathroom - ISH 2017
Pop up my Bathroom – ISH 2017

The special show ‘Pop up my Bathroom’ has been organised by Messe Frankfurt and the Association of the German Sanitation Industry (Vereinigung der Deutschen Sanitärwirtschaft – VDS).

Held in the ‘Saal Europa’ in Hall 4.0, from 11 to 15 March 2019, it will showcase the varied possibilities for using state-of-the-art bathroom design features in a number of selected combinations.

Pop up my Bathroom - ISH 2017
Pop up my Bathroom – ISH 2017

“Colour in the bathroom is continuing to assert itself in 2019 – and is, therefore, beginning to take over from the long-standing white phase. Deriving from the general lifestyle trend, this development makes its own specific contribution to issues such as individualisation, cosiness in the home and emotional appeal,” explains Jens J. Wischmann, General Manager of the Association of the German Sanitation Industry (VDS). “Coloured surfaces have, of course, always been around. Now the use of colours is bolder and not determined by the surfaces themselves.”

Particularly popular are both powerful, eye-catching colours in the yellow-orange-red spectrum and a palette of blues that bring with them a Nordic freshness. For interior design in the bathroom, green is the colour of the moment. The different greens range from a delicate pastel green and several fresh greens to a dark elegance.

Pop up my Bathroom - ISH 2017
Pop up my Bathroom – ISH 2017

It is a trend that can be attributed to an increased environmental awareness among customers, symbolising the health-giving aspects of the bathroom. Warm, powdery pastel tones from a subdued colour palette create a comfortable, easy-to-live-in feel in the bathroom. Lining up in the background are white and black, as well as all shades of grey. Black is used on its own as the dominant colour and combined with materials such as marble and brass. And there is a fundamental demand for individually designed bathrooms, with colour co-ordinated combinations of products and materials.

Pop up my Bathroom - ISH 2017
Pop up my Bathroom – ISH 2017

“It is about a holistic approach to colour concepts in the bathroom, which perhaps appear, at first glance, to contradict one another in the mix of styles,” reports Wischmann. He sees progressive bathroom furniture makers as the sector’s design pioneers of the future. “There is an excellent opportunity, here, for bathroom planners to extend their competence in the use of colour and to apply it accordingly.”

Visual and cultural research into trends in bathroom design, including current colour trends, will not only be showcased in the extensive exhibition at ISH 2019; it will also be the subject of various lectures in the adjoining Trend Forum.

If this sounds interesting to you then don’t just watch from afar – you can be there in person to visit the ISH show and Pop up my Bathroom exhibition plus attend interesting talks and discussions at the Trend Forum by joining the AIDT 2019 Tour. Full itinerary and information are available at aidt.com.au but be quick! Only a handful of rooms remain available.

Marmomac 2018 Report https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2018/10/16/marmomac-2018-report/ Mon, 15 Oct 2018 19:00:59 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=14525 ]]> Last month, TKBB’s Simon Hodgson visited Verona to attend Marmomac, the world’s international trade fair for natural stone. Here’s his report from the show.

Verona in Autumn briefly forgets about Juliet’s balcony and focuses on the world of stone. From a block to a masterpiece, Marmomacc attracts more than 68,000 visitors, of whom two thirds are from outside Italy.

Marea by Elena Salmistraro

Marea by Elena Salmistraro, one of the works featured in the Liquid, Solid, Stone exhibition housed in The Italian Stone Theatre, was unanimously elected winner of the 3rd edition of the Icon Award.

Marea, produced by Vicentina Marmi with Donatoni Macchine and Arabescato Orobico material by Cave Gamba, is planned to become the icon for the Marmomac 2019 communication campaign. It’s a different piece of work, but so were many in the Italian Stone Theatre.

Marmomac 2018
Contrasti, designed by Moreno Ratti and produced by Petri

Contrasti, designed by Moreno Ratti and produced by Petri, is designed to emphasise the wastage of a natural product and what can be done, merely by using slab off cuts. The basin has been finished to highlight the contrast of natural material and the random texture that results from the CNC machining.

Marmomac 2018
“Tasca” designed by Alessandro Raffa

A clever combination of shape and form, and a reduction in waste materials combine to create “Tasca”. Designed by Alessandro Raffa using Calacatta marble, this unit can be either free standing or mounted against a wall. A hollowed-out interior allows for easy plumbing connections and was created using overlapping elements generated by means of concentric cutting.

The Italian Stone Theatre occupies an entire hall at Marmomac and its product represent a masterful balance between the stone and the technology – something that Marmomac is all about.

Makeover for ISH 2019 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2018/10/08/makeover-for-ish-2019/ Sun, 07 Oct 2018 19:00:42 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=14492 ]]> In an exciting move, next year will herald a new era with a planned makeover for ISH 2019 as the show re-invents itself in terms of layout and visual impact to set new standards for future shows.

Join us at ISH 2019 – find out more here.

ISH 2019 makeover
Work has already commenced on the new Hall 12

The inclusion of the newly-built Hall 12 requires a fundamental rethink of the layout of all the halls. The new grouping for the various product groups and themes creates a clearer overview and greater transparency for visitors and achieves all kinds of synergies for the exhibitors. Alongside the new concept for the exhibition layout, ISH is also changing the sequence of days on which it is held. For the first time, the show will begin on Monday and end on Friday.

ISH 2019More than 2,400 exhibitors, including all the market leaders and technological pioneers from Germany and abroad, will be showcasing their products, many of them for the first time in the world, from 11 to 15 March 2019. The trade fair is the sector’s international meeting place par excellence – in 2017 some 64 percent of all exhibitors and 40 percent of visitors came from outside Germany. And the trend continues upwards.

With its broad range of pioneering, future-proof products and services for building services engineering, the biennially-held leading world trade fair highlights a large number of practical solutions and addresses specifically some of the political and economic issues of the day. The continually growing levels of international participation enables the sector to discuss many of their problems and solutions in increasingly interdisciplinary contexts too.

ISH 2019The ISH Water section concentrates, first and foremost, on sustainable sanitation solutions and ultra-modern bathroom design. This area concerns intelligent water-management systems and how best to make sure they are secure and safe and how best to regulate and monitor them. And clean drinking water, too, is a hugely important area, specifically against the background of increasing urbanisation. At the same time, we must not forget design considerations in the bathroom. The challenges for bathroom planning in the future continue to reflect the need to bring together the various aspects that result from demographic change, together with issues such as health, wellness, comfort and convenience, not forgetting the sparing use of resources. And there will be plenty of exhibitors showcasing ground-breaking solutions for the bathroom, here.

In the course of current technological change, digitalisation has, more than anything, impacted significantly on all areas at ISH. In the ISH Energy section, which has grown significantly in recent times, everything revolves around intelligent and efficient building services technology. Topics such as Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) and hybrid heating systems are crucially important for this segment.

ISH 2019Under the heading of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) the focus is on modern ventilation systems, as well as on centralised and decentralised solutions for both new builds and renovated properties alike. Energy efficiency and a comfortable atmosphere in the room, the phasing out of F gases and the resultant reduction in the availability of suitable refrigerants, as well as the development of alternatives, are all to be discussed, along with the many technical challenges facing the sector.

ISH 2019See all this and more during AIDT’s 2019 Tour to ISH which will include immersive visits to the amazing facilities of Hansgrohe, Duravit and Kaldewei (courtesy Bathe). To find out more, check the fabulous itinerary and view all inclusions click here.

Visit Duravit with AIDT in 2019 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/2018/08/06/visit-duravit-with-aidt-in-2019/ Sun, 05 Aug 2018 20:00:48 +0000 https://thekitchenandbathroomblog.com.au/?p=14013 ]]> AIDT invites you to visit the amazing facilities of Duravit in Hornberg, Germany as part of its 2019 Tour to ISH in March next year. From a small start in 1817 as an earthenware factory that manufactured crockery, the company expanded its production to porcelain and extended its product range to include sanitary ceramics and the name Duravit was established. Its commitment to being a design leader has always set the brand apart.

Duravit

Duravit has collaborated with internationally recognised designers since 1994, when the first “designer” bathroom by Philippe Stark was released. This is a partnership which has continued through to today with the latest release being the “Me by Starck” range. Other famous collaborations include Cecilie Manz, Matteo Thun and Norman Foster.

Duravit

Today the company has an international reputation for excellence and boasts 12 production plants and a workforce of more than 5975 employees worldwide. It offers a “hand-made” quality assurance that sets it apart from its competitors. Duravit continues to maintain a high standard of craftsmanship across all its ceramic manufacturing as well as all production areas to allow it to uphold its claim to quality design and function.

Duravit is the proud recipient of numerous international design awards that celebrate bold design – a Duravit hallmark. Each designer with whom Duravit partners is a specialist in his or her field and is known as a prominent global innovator with an inherent sense of good design. Duravit has the philosophy that good design is never at the expense of practicality and is not interested in “design for design’s sake”.

Duravit

Duravit maintains an ongoing dialogue with its trade partners and sanitaryware dealers to ensure the needs and requirements of the end user are addressed by the brand’s designs.

Sustainability is not a new topic for Duravit but is a practice the company has championed for years in its selection of materials, technological applications and production methods. The manufacture of Duravit’s sanitaryware ceramics today employs the same basic materials – clay, kaolin, feldspar and quartz – all natural, regenerative substances. The fusion of Duravit’s environmentally-friendly production technologies with the company’s meticulous quality control results in products that are highly functional and long lasting.

Duravit is also an internationally-recognised specialist in bathroom furniture design and manufacture incorporating technology such as sound, illumination and “defogging” functions. Duravit’s design collections also showcase an amazing array of bathware and, more recently, a beautifully crafted range tapware and showers.
